I think DL did this bit on the Tonight Show, where everyone would see it, to make a point. A lot of black stand-ups don't believe that Imus should have been fired. They may hate him personally, but his firing is an affront to their artistic freedom. A stand-up comic's bread and butter--especially a black stand-up--hinges on saying outrageous things to shake up their audiences and hold a mirror society. You don't get many black comics doing the kind of bland observational comedy---who are these people who cut the crust from their sandwiches--that made Jerry Seinfeld richer than god.
