James Gunn was hired by a small production company in 1995 called Troma to make extremely provocative movies, think Howard Stern crude, but for movies. There bread and butter was shock value, and he was a unknown, struggling producer/director nobody through much of the late 1990's and 2000's. Around 2011/2012 he stepped away from that world, realized the things he said were fucked up, and apologized for them. Doing so long before he was even famous as GoTG didn't come out until 2014.
Then in 2018 some Trump loving trolls (because he spoke out against Trump HEAVILY) found these almost decade old tweets and weaponized them into the picture you seen today. Many were even taken out of context, as there were tweets before and after that provided some context. Sadly some BGOL'ers jumped on this train too.
