where the hell did that come from

9 years 214 million

halk up one more for the so-called mystery team. First it was Cliff Lee going to the Phillies, then Albert Pujols heading to the Angels. Now Prince Fielder has shocked the baseball world by signing with the Detroit Tigers, a team that hadn't even been remotely connected to him in rumors the entire offseason. The robust first baseman has signed a nine-year contract worth $214 million, CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman has learned.

The Tigers were recently dealt what appeared to be a pretty severe blow, as Victor Martinez tore his ACL and could miss the entire 2012 season. So there went Miguel Cabrera's lineup protection, right? Think again. Owner Mike Ilitch really wants to win a World Series championship and this signing indicates one of the strongest reactions one can even imagine to news like that.

Heyman also notes that the finalists to land Fielder were the Nationals, Tigers and one other "mystery team." So it's entirely possible the Nationals would have come away with Fielder had Martinez not torn his ACL. It's funny how things work sometimes.

A Fielder-Cabrera combo in the middle of that order will dominate AL Central pitching. Throw Justin Verlander into the mix, and the Tigers have three of baseball's biggest stars.

Fielder, 27, hit .299/.415/.566 with 38 homers, 120 RBI, 95 runs and 36 doubles last season for the NL Central champion Brewers. He finished third in MVP voting and also took home the All-Star Game MVP. Though Fielder is a large man, he is as durable as they come. He hasn't played in less than 157 games in a season since becoming a regular. He played in all 162 last season, following up seasons where he appeared in 161 and 162 games, respectively.

The smart money with Fielder and Cabrera is a split at first base, with the other serving as the designated hitter. Then again, what if the Tigers got nuts and tried to shove Cabrera back across the diamond to play third base again -- where he began his career? That would mean the infield defense would be awful, but would also leave room for a better hitting DH than Brandon Inge (who, at this point, looks like the third baseman). And if Victor Martinez comes back healthy? It works even better.

For now, though, the only details that really matter are that Prince Fielder is heading to Detroit -- where his father once held down the middle of the order -- and he's going to make a whole lot of money.

I know his dad Cecil personally, he has 0 contact with his son. He recently bought a house from me here in Atlanta for his Daughter to live in. His son Prince is one low down motherfucker.:hmm:

Didn't see this coming. The GM said that he wouldn't be a good fit at one time.

I guess the owner thought otherwise. I just hope he gets in better shape. His weight had a lot to do with him being on the market for so long.

I always wondered what Prince's beef was with his dad. And can you really call a dude a low down motherfucker without knowing both sides of the story?

I'm pretty sure Cecil gave you both sides of the story.

Prince is acting like a bitch over the fact that his parents got divorced, wasnt any abuse or anything shit just didnt work out and at the beginning of his career Cecil asked him for a portion of his signing bonus since he was his agent.

as an outsider the shit he is holding against his father is very petty in my opinion. When Cecil was in the league every photo op he had Prince was not far from his side. people who played with his pop recount prince hitting homeruns out the park at 14 and 15 years old.

His son is pretty much bitter over how Cecil did his Mom, plus he felt like his dad was trying to take too much money from as his agent. Cecil is still in a lot of financial turmoil.... and needed his son to bail him out.... but the young man said "Go kick rocks".

He cut off his sister because she has chosen to have a relationship with her dad.

Cecil Fielder wants to make amends with Prince Fielder, who still wants nothing to do with him

Alex Espinoza of the Yuma Sun wrote a story about former slugger Cecil Fielder entitled “Fielder hoping to mend relationship with son.”

Within the article there are no real details about why Cecil Fielder and Prince Fielder are estranged, but the story does include a bunch of quotes from Cecil–including “can’t anybody say I didn’t give my son everything in the world”–that seem to paint Prince as the bad guy.

In reality Cecil Fielder gambled away millions of dollars while married to Prince Fielder’s mother, went through a very difficult divorce, and allegedly took $200,000 of an 18-year-old Prince’s signing bonus from the Brewers.

There are plenty of good reasons for Prince not wanting to have anything to do with his father, yet every year Cecil manages to get articles written about their relationship that portray him as the victim looking to repair a relationship. Seriously, here’s one from 2006 and one from 2007 and another from 2009. And there are more where those came from.

I’m sure Cecil isn’t all bad just as Prince isn’t all good, but if all someone knew about the situation came from today’s article in the Yuma Sun they’d think Prince was just being a jerk to his father and … well, that simply isn’t true. Cecil Fielder goes out of his way to talk about his son while Prince Fielder goes out of his way not to talk about his father, and the media coverage of the situation reflects that. What happened is still what happened, though, and Cecil doing all the press in the world isn’t going to change that.

IIRC, he was mad that his dad pissed away his money due to bad business deals, and mostly gambling, and leaving his mom and sis broke. Also, when Prince signed with the Brewers, his dad took 200k of his signing bonus. Cecil repped for him during the negotiations, but he promised to do it for free.

That's some cold blooded shit right there.

That's a lot of Big Macs.

His dad did him dirty.

:smh::smh::smh:

Main reason why I never wanted to have a white wife or have biracial child. Prince is half black his son is quarter. Washing away his black roots.

Main problem with Cecil is that he wouldn't shut his yap, and try to work things out behind the scenes. It seemed like every time someone stuck a mic in his face, he'd talk about his an his son's beef. He also publicly took credit for Prince's success. You just can't do that when you're trying to reconcile with your son. Eminem's mother learned that shit the hard way too.

Glad he's coming, though. I used to live a block from Comerica, but only went to the Yankee and Red Sox games. Ilitch is gonna rape us on tickets and parking, but it'll be worth it now.:dance:

they were both at the all star game where obama threw out the pitch together... dude wouldnt even let him pops meet his grandson. :smh::smh::smh:

cecil isn't an angel in all of this but this shit is petty and should not be a means of breaking up a family

only reason he got that money is due to CECIL'S genes

:confused::confused::confused:

Did cecil hit them homeruns?

without him would he be hitting the home runs???? cecil taught that dude the game from a very young age. as i said in my above comments people who were on teams with him tell stories about how cecil had him at the ball park daily working on his game.
