Denzel Washington Needs A Wake Up Call

I knew Denzel identifies as a Republican but I thought that was due to his family's GOP leaning history, and he actually associates himself with the old Republican Party not the current overtly racist one, or so I thought. But to hear him caping for cops without uttering one word about the abuse and out and murder many of them inflict on people of color every day, despite my respect for his acting chops, Denzel is a bit too conservative for my taste. Not gonna call him a coon, but hey... He says he has nothing but respect for law enforcement, okay. But along with that respect maybe he should utter a word or two about what they often do as opposed to what they're supposed to do. :hmm:

Something to keep an eye on. He's entitled to his opinion, and isn't infallible. His legacy and son's career could suffer if he really goes there. If he steps too far he can get it too. Come to think of it, I haven't seen him on the front lines or even make a statement regarding police brutality, but he may have. Still, he certainly is no Sir Sidney Poitier.

He’s entitled to his opinions. That’s what makes us Americans. When I raised my hand to take the Oath to defend the Constitution, it was so that man and many others could express themselves. Do I agree? Hell no! But he’s free to speak his mind, man. There’s bigger fish to fry.

Statement about not liking people who put those people down was suspicious and the linking of police and military was also suspicious. Language was the usual suspect language of those types. One can respect police work and call out police brutality.

Anybody else would be called out harshly. Its Denzel and he gets a pass. Guess I just dont want to believe he is one of those. He made another suspect statement couple years back as well. He should be careful moving forward though.

I believe Denzel has helped out quite a few people. Not on Cosby level but I do believe he has given back. But he needs to be careful with his statements as they can be used to help White supremacy.

‘Good Samaritan’ Denzel Washington came to the aid of a man in distress at busy L.A. intersection, police say

I tell a lot of black people this "Let you get rich tomorrow and in a month you're going to be republican and conservative too..." you want to protect what is yours especially if you've worked for it and it wasn't given and you want some order and structure around to maintain what you have.

I understand wanting to protect what's yours. However, does it matter if you live in 2BR1BA apt with five other people, and drive a twenty year old civic as your only vehicle? If a problem occurs, do liberals not want to be able to call the police to restore order and provide structure when absolutely necessary? The difference is people in the circumstance I described are rarely treated the same way people with Denzel's economic circumstances are treated. The fact that Denzel felt the need and was able to easily step between a black homeless man and a group of police with everyone walking away smiling should tell everyone what they need to know. Could I do that, or could anyone else on this board?

actions speak louder than words..

Brother, that's hardly definitive. White folks have been trying to claim him for a while. I've never known him to declare himself as one or endorse any Republican presidents. But we do know he supported Barack.

Agreed. But I have heard him say that he is a registered Republican and when the interviewer seemed surprised he went on the say his father was an avowed conservative Republican and he early in life just followed in his footsteps. He went on to say that Republican Party he and is father belonged to no longer exists and while his political registration still reads Republican he mostly supports Democratic candidates and incumbents.

My personal opinion is he has not changed his registration simply in deference to his father who never did either. My only gripe with him his given his platform he could be a bit more vocal about police brutality. Recognizing potential damage to his career might have had something to do with that.

I’ve never heard him say that. If possible, I’d love to see the interview.
Yeah, I’ve only seen him support Democratic candidates. If it is true, what you’re saying regarding him not changing his registration officially make sense. Whenever I’ve seen him questioned on politics, he‘s stayed pretty non-specific.

I agree with you that he could be more vocal as far police brutality goes.
