Denzel Washington Fought To Change The Ending Of Training Day

i bet y'all wanted scarface to live too!

Getting killed in the end made sense for the movie because it was about reaping what you sow. that was the message, and that eventually the streets would eat you alive. Keep in mind the movie is based off Jake's perspective of this criminal world.

Now if it was Alonzo from the jump, showing his family, and wanting to really get out of trouble with the Russians, then you have a different perspective.

a true hardcore ending would've been the cac comin home and denzel would've been sitting down with a shotgun on his lap holding dudes baby and his wife sitting in another chair looking shook..than denzel looks at ethan and goes "where's my motherfucking money"..than it goes to black

By the time hoyt makes it back to alonzos side chick's place she's naked on the bed and he's counting the money so either he fucked her or was going to fuck her in any case..WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T HE JUST TAKE IT TO THE RUSSIAN MOB AND PAY OFF HIS DEBT?

Alonzo Harris: S.I.S. Detective. Give me 18 months, I'll give you a career. We're an elite unit. We make the big seizures. We make the big arrests. But if you're in my unit, you gotta be in it all the way or not at all. I thought that you was man enough to face that. I guess I was wrong. Five proven, decorated officers say that you're the shooter. The investigators are gonna want to pull a tube of your blood to check for intoxicants, and what are they gonna find, Jake? Do the math.
You've been smoking PCP all day, haven't you?

Jake: You've been planning this all day?

Alonzo Harris: I've been planning this all week, son. You talk that crazy shit, I'll make sure that blood gets to the lab. You wanna walk your baby nuts around the block, you won't make it to the corner, but if you're cool, *if* you're cool... then you're a hero. You're a virgin shooter above suspicion.

why bring hoyt in on the drug dealer killing when they set it up to look like the dealer fired on one of them anyway. A cop getting shot by a known drug dealer who gets killed is an automatic walk even for dirty police.

after doing all that work to set him up as the hero cop who shot a drug dealer during a bust..alonzo then sets hoyt up to get killed by 3 mexican gangbangers...how was alonzo going to explain that???

theres a reason ONLY denzel won an oscar for that flick not the flick itself..:giggle:

i would have been happy with Denzel walking away after the other cop rats him out and gets him kicked off the force. A few favors later he shows up as a drunk black ops agent in some foreign country... setting up 'The Equalizer' as the sequel to 'Training Day'. I'm not sure which medium they will use to fill in the gap - 15 minute short tacked onto the end of a DVD release, cross promotion cameo in another movie/tv show or dropping hints in post Oscar interviews throughout the years leading up to the Equalizer where it all comes together.

I like the connection but the training and discipline he shows in the equalizer suggests something thats more ingrained, OCD even than anything alonzo exhibited in training day.

I understand Denzel reason for changing the ending, but it would of been cool to see the bad guy make it to the end of the movie and live

I remember that !!! Black women were talking about that for WEEKS!

I don't think this should have stayed. It humanizes the character and that's not what you want with a real villain in a movie like this.

Naw. It was perfect the way it ended.

They kept the right ending. Karma coming full circle for Alonzo. If he lived, the movie wouldn't have made any sense.

It would've meant "bad guy does what he wants carte Blanche with no repercussions"? Nah. They made the right choice in the end.

I'm not even being the moralist. I don't mind the bad guy getting away. I just think in this case specifically, the ending was so good and brought so much resolution to the movie that any change just isn't necessary.

ALL VALID POINTS! YES!

One particular genius move for a film is where the bad guy manipulates everything into his plan for it to work and even when it goes wrong - he STILL comes out on top.

My favorite film for doing that shit was SE7EN.

They never even had Kevin Spacey's name on the poster, not in the credits, nor was he listed anywhere with this story so when he shows up near the end, that moment was like Oh shit - it's him! Then at the end. BLAM BLAM BLAM - SEVEN FUCKING TIMES. Whole theatre screamed when Brad Pitt started blasting that dude.

Training Day could've went that route too if Jake shot Alonzo to death but no... Jake was replacing Alonzo. He will, one day, be the rough rider on those blocks. His clout with the hood is sealed. But he needed to walk away and stay the clean guy. The Russians were a perfect foil for Alonzo - and we never even seen them - not until the end - and they came outta nowhere. Pus the whole film into a new perspective - the enforcer was probably watching Alonzo all day - the triggermen could've been anywhere or they were around the whole time and seen everything that went down.

If Alonzo would've lived it would've fucked the movie up - that might be a cop out for a bad screenplay too. When they cant get a good ending - they pick one the audience thinks they want but that aint it. Its like, I remember all the folks in the crowd waiting for his redemption moment. All the older folks, white folks too - they were sitting there waiting for the scene that showed he was actually the good guy - and when he died in that blaze of gunfire - the crowd was rocked silent... brilliant.

We just watched Denzel - PLAY A BAD GUY onscreen and die! That was the first and last time that EVER happened on film and the film is better for it.

MAN - YOU KNOW YOUR SHIT SON!

ONE OF MY TOP FIVE FAVORITE OF ALL TIMES...

You are being a moralist and very simplistic in your thinking. The "bad' guy can get away, and in a lot of movies they take the short cut and kill or jail the bad guy when there is no reason for most of the film that would lead to the bad guy getting caught.

That is not saying that I didn't enjoy the film, but in that scenario he doesn't have to be killed or could have gotten away.
to add on
the best villains forge greater heros - a villain that is so resourceful that he not only avoids death and capture- a survivor... he suffers a loss at the hero's hands but is still around still doing business... They fucked up Kingpin in the Daredevil series by not seeing that - but anyway they wouldn't want to give a black villain the power you see at the end of LA Confidential

That movie was very interesting. I saw it different than other people. He was trying to show the rookie what was really going on and the rookie act like he could not catch on. And that is how life really is what he was trying to show him. It takes a wolf to protect the sheep. A sheep itself cannot protect other sheep. The rookie was playing checkers. While Alonzo was trying to show him how to play chess. But Alonzo used to be just like that rookie, all green and dumb to what was really going on.
But for the black community to let that white dude walk up out of that place with a million in cold cash was out of the question. Like none of them could use the money. And Alonzo tried over and over to get him to change his job because he was not cut out for what was really going on. And at the time he just could not hold his hand. Eventually he was going to get Alonzo killed. Alonzo knew this and had no choice but to get him out of what he was getting to deep in. And at the time what he did with the contract was the only way.
It took him 10 years to get rid of Roger. He played the game and he finally got rid of him. For a black man or anybody that is still human it is a dog eat dog world. And I would hate to be in the dog belly trying to look out. Why you think nobody has been able to change things yet????? There have been people on jobs of various levels come to their boss with corruption going on and they get fired or killed for doing what they thought was right. The rookie had one day to show Alonzo what he was made off. It was not detective.
