The sad thing is there are alternatives to petroleum for both fuel and plastics but it's largely being suppressed. We can be off oil if not for greed.
You think they will let you off of the energy plantation? Think again. Oil is the second most plentiful liquid on earth, they created scarcity so they can charge higher prices. The same complex process to get fuel is the same for any fuel. You see what happens to the people creating cheap/free energy sources.

Electric cars are expensive, but hardly suppressed. Biofuels are hard to find, but not unheard of. When I was a kid a lot of my Canadian neighbors used propane, especially if they drove an Econoline van.

Well said. The only thing I should point out is that propane is a fossil fuel too since it's obtained by petroleum refinement.
