Back in 95, I wanted to build a deck in the backyard. After thinking about it, I said fuck it... I want a deck that has a roof and is screened in so bugs and mosquitoes cant bother us, so I drew up a rough schematic and built a 14 x 20 patio off of the back of the house. I used fiberglass corrugated roof panels so it lets light in but also provides 100 percent shade from the sun. Every piece of wood was high pressure treated lumber. I built everything by myself with no help except for a double 2x10 beam that my father insisted on helping me lift and fasten into place. 25 years later, it still looks and works like new. A couple of my neighbors tried to build something similar and at least one of their roofs caved in the first winter because of wet heavy snow. I built my roof with 2x8 joists, 24 inches on center for each 2x8 roof rafter. Never had a problem. I built the deck around the air conditioner compressor but it has since been replaced and now it's on the side of the patio.
Forgive the shitty picture quality... my dad came over damn near every day taking a few pics with his Polaroid. I scanned the Polaroids to my computer years later.
