Over the weekend, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya took to his Twitter account to discuss his frustrations with being unable to make a fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. "Sugar" Shane Mosley recently left Golden Boy in order to finalize a deal to face Pacquiao on May 7 in Las Vegas.
Since Mosley departed from Golden Boy, the former three division champion has been openly critical about the way Golden Boy managed his career and accused the promotional company of trying to sabotage his negotiations with Pacquiao by pushing very hard to make a third fight between Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.
During some of De La Hoya's tweets, he described Pacquiao's current run of opponents as "heavy bags." Basically he said there are people who are profiting heavily by intentionally placing Pacquiao in the ring with opponents who are going take a serious beating. He said when the "heavy bags" run out, those people will be forced to make the Mayweather fight.
De La Hoya's "people" reference can only be directed at his promotional rival Top Rank. The "heavy bag" comment would have to include De La Hoya's former business partner, Mosley.
"I feel that right now Pac is being squeezed and people are making money off him. [When] there are no more heavy bags, there will be no choice but to make the fight happen. It's a shame because Manny wants it and Floyd wants it," De La Hoya said.
No surprise with De La Hoya's statement because the tension between Mosley and Golden Boy has been building. During a recent interview with Robert Morales of BoxingScene.com, Mosley held nothing back when discussing the current status of his relationship with Golden Boy. He voiced his displeasure over several things, including members of Golden Boy's staff becoming friendly with his ex-wife, Jin Mosley.
"It seems like it was all a conspiracy," Mosley said. "The whole thing stinks. Now that I'm not in the picture, she is best friends with (matchmaker) Eric Gomez and Golden Boy, hanging out and going to the fights. And I'm like, 'Wow.'"
