Black Manta

A cunning high-seas pirate and mercenary named David Kane* (The Get Down‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II)
A ruthless treasure hunter and mercenary, the man known as Black Manta spent his days scavenging the unexplored depths of the ocean, discovering long lost relics and powerful mythical items, all while taking on various jobs to fund his passion. Until one particular job changed his life.

Hired to bring back a sample of Arthur Curry's blood, Black Manta encountered the young Aquaman and his father while the two were out at sea. In the ensuing struggle, Aquaman's father suffered a heart attack that ultimately led to his death. Seeking revenge, Aquaman hunted down Black Manta—and accidentally killed his father in retaliation. Thus began a circle of vengeance that forever bonded hero and villain.

Fueled by hate and utilizing a powerful suit of armor that allows him to breathe underwater, survive the incredible pressures of the ocean depths and fire deadly energy blasts through his mask, Black Manta seeks to destroy Aquaman and everything he holds dear.

Aquaman and Ocean Master Aka King Orm

Aquaman (Jason Mamoma)
Cast out from Atlantis as a baby, Arthur Curry grew up on land, thinking himself a normal human. But when he matured, Atlantis returned, claiming him as their rightful king. Caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, he’s committed to protecting the entire globe.

Aquaman is the king of all things aqua. He can breathe underwater, swim at tremendous speeds, and telepathically communicate with sea life. Being able to withstand ocean depths, he gets bonus points on land with his superhuman strength, enhanced senses, and nearly impenetrable skin. And although his courage and decisive nature have proven him a true heir to Atlantis’s throne, the continual conflict between land and sea makes him a citizen of both—and at home in neither.

Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson)
Ocean Master is the evil half-brother of Aquaman, son of his father and another woman. Determined to usurp the throne of Atlantis, he employs piracy and terrorism to reach his goals. His powerful mystic abilities are channeled through his trident, although he also has access to technology and many other weapons. He has been a member of the Anti-Justice League, the Injustice Gang and the Secret Society of Super-Villains. Ocean Master was created by Bob Haney and Nick Cardy, first appearing in Aquaman #29. (1966)

Mera and Nuidis Vulko

Mera (Amber Heard)
She rules the seas alongside Aquaman, one of the most well-known heroes in the world, and stands as one of the most powerful women in the DC Universe. Her name is Mera and you don't want to get on this quick-tempered beauty's bad side because she won't hesitate to kick your butt across all seven seas.

A princess of the underwater kingdom of Xebel who possesses enhanced strength, durability and the ability to bend water to her will, Mera trained since birth for her ultimate mission: to kill the current King of Atlantis in retaliation for her people's exile. Mera knew that to do this, she’d have to gain Aquaman’s trust. It was the only way she could get close enough to kill him. But as she got to know Aquaman, something unexpected occurred—she fell in love. And thus began the fiery redhead's constantly conflicted sense of being. To stand beside her husband is to betray her family and her people, but to give them what they want, to fulfill her mission, is something her heart would never allow her to do.

Although a hero in her own right, Mera often finds herself struggling between two worlds—whether it’s between her own people and her husband or between those of the surface and those of the sea. Her aggressive nature especially puts her at odds with the surface world, a world so much bigger and more complex than she was ever taught and with whom she finds it impossible to relate to and understand. It’s for her love of Aquaman that she even attempts to understand this world of man, and why she continues to try to be a part of both worlds while terrified of belonging to none.

Nidius Vulko
The chief scientific adviser of Atlantis and is probably its most notorious political and academic figure (he has been involved in most of the political changes and revolution the city has gone through). He knew Aquaman's mother and was an advisor to King Trevis. He was present at Aquaman's birth, and argued against leaving Aquaman to die, claiming the curse of Kordax was a silly superstition. Chronologically, he later befriends Aquaman when both were held in an Atlantean prison. After Aquaman frees himself and gains his throne, he makes Vulko his regent.

He assists Aquaman and the Atom in repelling microscopic invaders from a "single drop of water". They are led by Galg The Destroyer. Soon after he supervises the transition of Atlantis citizens from water to air breathers; this is needed to escape an enemy attack. For a time, he is the King of Atlantis. He is present when Aquagirl is confirmed dead. Vulko is the one to affix a harpoon to Aquaman's missing hand.

Atlanna

Atlanna (Nichole Kidman)
Atlanna would often wander from the confines of her undersea kingdom, one night during a horrendous storm a sailboat carrying her future husband; Tom Curry, had capsized throwing him overboard to drown. Atlanna saved the would be lost at sea pedestrian and the two would fall in love.[1] Over time they'ed end up having a son who she would ask be named as a surface dweller, thus Arthur Curry was born and named on the surface world.

Aquaman director James Wan reveals how he’ll show underwater dialogue

So, how is Aquaman director James Wan going to solve that underwater dialogue problem, anyway?

You’ll recall that in Justice League, director Zack Snyder had Mera (Amber Heard) create a giant air pocket underwater so she could have a chat with Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa). Fans drowned that scene with criticism, noting that Atlanteans don’t need air to talk. Wan then teased on Twitter he would handle underwater dialogue differently in his upcoming stand-alone movie, which has caused all sorts of speculation as to how he might pull that off.

EW got to see about 15 minutes of the new film and noticed something. The characters … when they’re underwater … they just …

“People are overthinking it,” Wan says. “They’re just gonna talk!

Precisely. Characters underwater speak normally in the film despite being underwater. Wan then adds a tad bit of a visual effect as Atlanteans speak, suggesting sound waves, but that’s all. It’s a rather brilliantly simple and naturalistic-looking solution to a problem that isn’t wasn’t actually that big of a problem in the first place.

Underwater scenes are an enormous part of the new film and were the biggest draw for Wan (Furious 7, The Conjuring franchise), who was most excited by the challenge of creating an entirely new fantastical world.

The reveal comes on the heels of EW’s exclusive report on Tuesday where Warner Bros. and DC executives gave their thoughts on Aquaman after having seen some of the completed footage. The film will be released Dec. 21.

We were cool until you added MOS to that list...lol.

to each his own but imo Zach has butchered Superman. Action was too notch, Lois was on pout and Zod & crew were great. But you cant have a good superman movie if you fuck up superman.

DC team breaks silence on James Wan's Aquaman: 'It's extraordinary'

The team at Warners Bros. and DC are really confident that their next big release, Aquaman, is going to swim not sink.

EW exclusively spoke to the film’s producers and the studio’s executive brass about the next title in the DC Extended Universe coming Dec. 21. The film starring former Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa as the half-Atlantean, half-human superhero has been shrouded in secrecy and has only publicly released a couple photos so far, but there are hints that a trailer could be coming soon. The movie represents the first superhero film by director James Wan, best known for his work on The Conjuring and Insidious films, yet also tackled Furious 7 — the top-grossing film of the Fast & Furious franchise.

“James has done an incredible job with his team,” says Warner Bros. film chief Toby Emmerich. “The film is taking you to a different place and imagining the underwater world in a way you haven’t seen before.”

One of the film’s producers, Peter Safran, tells us the film has, “got the great action you expect, it’s got a lot of great humor, it works on so many levels … it’s a testament to James’ unique vision. I think it’s an extraordinary step in DC Universe that sets it on the right path.”

Right, what are they supposed to say? "Movie is trash b, don't waste your time"

Momoa makes a good Aquaman, hope this works.

And how in your opinion did they fuck up Superman? If anything Cavill was a great casting for Superman. Other than killing Zod (When he had good reason) what did they do wrong with him?

superman is traditionally depicted as the ultimate do gooder/boy scout. He genuinely cares about the little ppl and has a strong moral compass. He truly considers himself a part of humanity while most of humanity considers him a God. in many interpretations Clark is the real persona while superman is the facade. In short he isn't the angry brooding type.

that's how he was depicted in the 1st 2 synder films. the only ppl he cared about was MARTHA and Lois. In most films Superman runs around helping ppl and even getting cats outta trees.

where were those action set pieces of superman helping/saving ppl (outside snapping zod's neck to save one family after participating in fight that destroyed a city where he showed no regard for human collateral damage but it looked cool)

that's what is supposed to differate Batman vs Superman, but they went all dark and angsty with Clark.

“The water world my movie takes place in is so separate and so far apart from previous DC movies it’s like I’m making my own sci-fi fantasy film,” Wan says. “This is a whole new underwater world nobody has seen before in live action.”

There are Atlanteans riding great white sharks, giant octopi, seven different underwater kingdoms, trench-dwelling cannibals, and even sea dragons (Wan’s fearsome take on the oft-mocked image of Aquaman riding a seahorse in the Super Friends cartoons).

December 21? What happened to the October release date? Its like they are determined to Fuck up some how.

THANK YOU...
:bravo:

I made these very same points about the differences between Superman and Snyder's version of the characters a few years ago and I was raked over the coals for it.
What's the point of making Superman dower and angsty just like Batman, The Punisher or Wolverine...?

This symbol is supposed to inspire HOPE.
Not fear...

Have you guys noticed that virtually every version of Superman that has been on TV or the big screen was a BIG hit largely because the writers, directors and actors were faithful to who & what the character is and is all about? And the character didn't INTENTIONALLY kill anyone. (Generally speaking, people die simply only because he couldn't prevent someone from dying).
In all of these best known & accepted versions, fans & critics both loved and enjoyed Superman.

But, when Zac Snyder and crew decided to change up Superman and gave us THIS dark, murderous "more realistic" version:

Fans and critics were far less happy with the final product and the films he's been in have been only "moderately" or poorly received...?
- He doesn't smile.
- He's dark and gloomy.
- We NO IDEA what he stands for.
- HE KILLS HIS OPPONENTS...

I enjoyed the set pieces of man of steel but synder did a horrible job capturing superman's humanity

I know we are tired of the DC vs Marvel comparisons but the best representation of superman in recent years is Captain America in the marvel movies.

Let it go and focus! This is an Aquaman thread.

EXACTLY!!!!!
That's why I'm happy he's no longer directing DCEU films.
His version of Watchmen was fine. It's meant to be dark and violent.
But Superman is NOT a dark, violent & depressing character. Nor was he ever meant to be...
He's a beacon of HOPE and LIGHT...

I'm not really feeling the look of Aquaman... Or is it just me?

If the movie is good does it really matter? Plus these are still. The trailer drops later this week and we'll have a better look at the character in Director Wan's movie.

Without question, I'm easily one of the biggest Superman fans on the board and I absolutely love MoS.

So when I read comments like yours I laugh. Mainly because this Superman showed more "Humanity" than any iteration to date. Especially when placed in the backdrop of a real world with all of its dynamics and complexities.

Brilliant movie!

Anyway back on track...Aquaman!
