Dave Chappelle– “Black Lives Matter is the Worst Slogan I’ve Ever Heard”

Dave Chappelle is hilarious of course, but he’s also contemplative. He’s up there for me with Jerry Seinfeld, unique in his ability to poke fun at himself, at ourselves, get a little ever so raunchy, and still be profound.

So luckily I caught one of his rare gigs last night at the Cutting Room on East 32nd St. He was warming up for three nights this week at the much larger Gramercy Theater. But he’ll also be back at the Cutting Room Wednesday trying out new material before heading for London and show some shows abroad.

His management asked the Cutting Room to keep the room small, so the famed venue closed the doors that separate the front room from the bar area. And Chappelle did a little over an hour that someone should have filmed for posterity.

But guess what? Chappelle doesn’t allow cell phones or cameras in the house. Guests must put their phones in a little sealed bag that’s locked for the duration of the show. That’s why you don’t see YouTube flooded with unlicensed videos. At one point during the gig, the comic himself wanted to look something up on his phone, then told the audience: “I can’t. I don’t have my phone either.”

He began the hour by saying, quite jovially: “This will be a racist show. I’m telling you now.” His jokes about blacks and white were evenly divided. But the subjects of the day were right up there. “Black lives matter is a terrible slogan,” he said. He much prefers Dwayne Wade’s hashtag “enough is enough.”

As for the killing of Wade’s cousin, and Donald Trump’s immediate vulgarizing of it, Chappelle said: “Oh yeah, now I’m voting for Donald Trump.” That drew peals of laughter from the mixed race crowd. But I couldn’t help wonder what black comics and their audiences are saying around the country in similar clubs. Trump’s message–“What do you have to lose?”–is now a set up for various punchlines.

Chappelle talked about wanting to vote for Hillary Clinton. But it also turns out that he and his wife are friendly with outspoken conservative black actress Stacey Dash. That gives the argument balance, although he conceded that he and “Stacey are not soulmates.” He also touched on the very recent stabbing at Cornell. Is it too soon? “Who stabs anymore?” he added: “Very OJ.”

What Chappelle is looking for in people is empathy. “When did it become just caring about ourselves and not caring about other people?” he asked rhetorically. Empathy becomes his key word, and he weaves it through some outrageous and mildly raunchy passages.

Chappelle told me that Wednesday’s show would reflect what worked and didn’t tonight– although most everything did. “I love this place,” he said of the Cutting Room. “It’s like working in a jazz club.”

welp he surely had enough money, and lyrical influence that he could have got in on the ground floor a few years ago to improve on the product.

Slogan is not perfect, but that group is doing WORK. I'm pretty sure they would have an open door policy for him to offer any suggestions on improvement.

What kind of work are they doing? I don't see black on black crime being tackled. Or does black lives matter only matters when other races do blacks wrong?

A simple interpretation for those who do not get it.

The meaning of the hashtag = #Blacklivesmatter (too)

Never forget!

Michael Brown's body was left in the street like a dead dog for hours in the hot summer sun....uncovered after he was gunned down by those who are supposed to "protect and serve."

Thus the slogan as Dave puts it.....BLACK-LIVES-MATTER was born.

I think people are being 100% disingenuous when they claim they don't know what BLM means or retort with 'don't all lives matter?' Get the fuck outta here with that bullshit.. You have to be blind, deaf and dumb to not understand what's happening to our people on several fronts.

Only willfully ignorant, hateful ass cacs and self-hating negroes don't get it. And these devils are the main reason for BLM in the 1st place. Fuck your not-understanding, fuck your little 'all lives matter' retort and fuck any black person that will sully the name of this organization.

I may not 100% agree with every action from BLM. I do, however, 100% agree with and understand the motivation behind the name.

I actually get what he's saying and I support blm.

You know how you may have to explain WHY the phrase is BLM... and then ppl get it? That's bad marketing. That's like having a logo that you have to explain to ppl. It should immediately resonate with ppl.

My uncle is super pro black, like 60's militant level pro black and even he asked me earlier this year "I get that black lives matter but don't all lives matter". Once I explained it to him he was like "ahhhh, im glad you helped me there..."

But it shouldn't take that explanation at all.

It doesn't require an explanation if one knew why the slogan was created.

I disagree and that's coming from someone who supports the movement.

I've had way too many convos w ppl (young and old) who require an explanation and then feel bad for not getting it before. Clear signs of bad messaging.

It's has nothing to do with messaging. Let's be frank. Most of these trogdolytes, walking the Earth, are fucking dumb.

Nope. I don't have to listen to Dave. Celebs have let me down before and I have my own thoughts. He has no influence over shit going on with me and mines. I won't spend time on it, but I know niggas thought Dave was different since the Oprah clip about the dress and the whole escape to Africa to keep them from laughing at us shit.Don't matter. Think for yourselves and don't be butt hurt when these on the fence coons let you down. I hope Dave ain't coonin, but it is what is. All Lives Matter clerk ass niggas everywhere.

There's very little to go off of here from beginning to end...

Every single article pertaining to this topic right now is copied and pasted in the exact same manner as above. I'd like to hear this joke within the proper context to make the assessment cause for all intents and purposes, somethings feels very off about all this.

I don't think some of yall read the OP. Dave saying BLM is a bad slogan, that they should have chosen something like "enough is enough" is not attacking the organization for protesting or the work they are doing, it's almost like saying BLM isn't confrontational enough. I'm not sure if that was his exact intent or if he simply means it should be more straight forward, but the info presented doesn't indicate he disparaged them with his jokes.

It was click-bait to begin with
Of course Black lives matter

The slogan takes power from Black. Remember "Black Power"? Nah, Blacks can't have some "Black Power" because apparently they live in fear and had to create Black lives matter - the context.

Imagine the words Black Power being said. It has force, it's a man's slogan
Imagine "Black lives matter" being said - I hear a little child, hoping to be heard, hoping someone agrees

wouldn't enough is enough something that would also have to be explained ? enough what ?

and as far as your uncle asking don't all lives matter....if that were true there wouldn't be a black lives matter to begin with.

Black lives matter is getting attention is all. There is a difference between slaves and voluntary slaves. These institutions we were born in and raised in are started and built on the foundation of white supremacy and black inferiority. Real blackness is almost completely destroyed. The world has been programmed and taught to worship war and be under the control of Satan (whites). That is the problem us being carbon copies of those who by nature are here to destroy us and the earth. How do we stop helping them to rule and destroy the earth? We should only be concerned with ourselves right now. And if we had knowledge we would be devoting our lives to separation, complete separation.
We are living in a world where they are selling castrated black males as slaves. You give blacks the illusion they are free they will help you to kill themselves. They will even help you to deal with the blacks that still have resistance in them and it is hard to take their soul from them.
Dave Chappelle is a brother but the dissatisfied are the majority and we got to keep trying to at least breath free. He is part of the satisfied that are allowed to breath free because of control.
I tell you if people knew the truth about Jonestown, Rwanda, Libya, etc. they would make their salvation with fear and trembling. These devils are out to kill us and make a profit off of our death. They already own damn near the whole world.

It's the same deal with "hands up, don't shoot"

So we are getting chopped down by police like dogs in the street and the response is to have little kids out on their knees with their hands up begging not to get shot?

Fuck that.

Again I get what ur trying to convey but the messaging is... Off.
The message is straight forward: kids with their hands up are begging not to be shot. Sorry it isn't catchy enough. We will keep working on a messaging that cops can catch on to.

wouldn't enough is enough something that would also have to be explained ? enough what ?

People are honestly really fucking obtuse.

Doesn't all lives matter?

Sure! But we are talking about black lives right now.

Maybe the folks at Mountain Dew should be tasked with creating the campaign for justice.

Always seemed clear to me.

Unarmed black people, even those with their hands up are getting shot.

Look at me I am not a threat don't shoot me...

but think about it.....even in the 60's things were crystal clear.

How many just knew what US meant

one of the first books on the BPP even the title was an explanation of sorts.

Prince had to explain the symbol .

I think most things will need explanation and some things will require more because the people are intentionally trying not to understand

It's like some BGOLers *want* to find a reason to shit on Dave Chappelle and are like "fuck common logic". A full hour plus long COMEDY show and y'all don't think Roger Friedman's cherry-picked headline was intentional? His proud "claim to fame" is that he "single-handedly took down Michael Jackson". WAKE THE FUCK UP!

Once again, before attacking Dave I *STRONGLY* suggest you consider the "source" - just take 30 seconds to look at his wiki page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Friedman

amd_roger_friedman.jpg

Friedman worked for Fox News as a journalist for ten years, starting Fox News's website and creating the popular Fox411 column. Among his many successes was his coverage of Michael Jackson's child molestation and conspiracy trial in 2005.

In April 2009, Friedman was fired by Foxnews.com after he reviewed the film X-Men Origins: Wolverine based on viewing a bootlegged copy of the movie online. In June 2009, Friedman filed a lawsuit against Fox News Network L.L.C., NewsCorp America, Twentieth Century Fox, and Rupert Murdoch, claiming wrongful termination, tortious interference with his employment contract, and defamation based on statements Fox News and 20th Century Fox made after his firing.

Friedman joined The Hollywood Reporter as a senior correspondent in May 2009. He was fired in March 2010. He started the Showbiz 411 column during his time at The Hollywood Reporter. The website has become independent since he was fired. Friedman regularly writes about Michael Jackson and complications surrounding his death and estate. Showbiz411 frequently breaks entertainment news stories and is often highlighted on the Drudge Report.
