To my knowledge he didn’t make money when it was sold as a DVD or streaming. So although it was very successful, he didn’t reap the benefits.

Weren't they trying to pay him 50 million? Chapelle was 30 and had been in the business for over 10 years when he started doing The Chapelle Show. Dude didn't just get off the boat so if he signed a bad contract that's on him. He wasn't a kid when he did that show and he had been in plenty of movies and TV by that time so he was familiar with contracts.

I will never forget what Chapelle show means to me. Back in 2008 my mom was having breast cancer surgery done. Well, my whole family was sitting in the cancer ward waiting for my mother to get out of surgery. I didn’t want to think about why I was sitting in John Hopkins medical center, so I pulled up the Chappelle show and my ex-wife and I was laughing so hard. My brother’s wife at the time came up and started watching it with us. Then the rest of the family came up and started watching the show with us. We all was laughing so hard inside the family waiting room. There was a couple of white families in there too. I can tell our laughter had an effect on them too. We watched the show for the hours that I could find online. David and cast let us forget why we were in John Hopkins in the first place. We were able to not worry about mom and take our minds off everything. So that show will always have a special place for me. Yes, my mom made it through surgery and is here today. /fin

I ain’t got Viacom stock and I fucking love the Chappell e Show, but I won’t touch that bitch on any streaming platform from now until they pay him. If HBO was smart they’ll drop that bitch too.
Fuck that show until he gets paid. Steal it off torrents and watch it like that if you must, but don’t stream shit from any platforms. That’s how they get paid. Netflix did a stand-up thing here. ( no pun intended)

They didn't honor the contract that's the point.
He had a deal to make a percentage. They gave him that deal thinking it'd be a steal. It ended up meaning they had to pay him hundreds of millions. They offered him 50 instead.

They are the ones who didn't honor the contract but then put out the narrative he turned down a generous offer .

He signed the contract, obviously they did what they were required to do because if they didn't he would have sued. I have never heard Dave Chappelle say they didn't honor their side of the contract. He seems to be saying.

Comedian Dave Chappelle has succeeded in getting his old sketch comedy program Chappelle’s Show removed from Netflix, after requesting the streaming service do so because the original rights holder, ViacomCBS, began licensing it without his permission.
The news means Netflix subscribers will no longer have access to the show’s three seasons that originally aired on Comedy Central. Netflix first made the show available on November 1st, and it’s no longer discoverable on the platform as of Tuesday afternoon. Netflix declined to comment.

Chappelle’s Show aired on ViacomCBS-owned Comedy Central from 2003 to 2006 and the program has aired in the years since on other cable networks through syndication deals. It has also been available through Comedy Central’s own website and app, but more recently on streaming services including CBS All Access (also a ViacomCBS property), HBO Max, and Netflix. Chappelle has a controversial relationship to the program, having quit it abruptly during production of its third season, and he does not own the rights to it despite it carrying his name.
Netflix, however, also has a lucrative contract with Chappelle for comedy specials and other programming that started back in 2016 and is worth tens of millions of dollars. The Wrap reports that Chappelle’s ongoing relationship with Netflix is why the streaming service decided to honor his request and pull his old show from the platform. The show is still available on CBS All Access and HBO Max as of Tuesday.
Chappelle initially mentioned his frustration with recent licensing deals around Chappelle’s Show in his Saturday Night Live monologue earlier this month. The comedian then posted an 18-minute clip of unreleased standup, titled “Unforgiven,” to his Instagram account earlier today.
In the clip, Chappelle references his request to Netflix, saying, “I called them and I told them that this makes me feel bad. And you want to know what they did? They agreed that they would take it off their platform just so I could feel better.” He also called the decision to stream Chappelle’s Show “fencing stolen goods.”
