this what bugging me out. its not like he wasn't other films. oprah backed the the great debaters and had a whole episode of the orpah winfrey show to promote it. not one word of the rape charges. and this is almost 10 years ago. and the victim was still alive.
Well, simply put, in terms of profile he wasn't then who he is now. In all of those other films, no matter the quality or status of them, to the public at large (and specifically to Hollywood, the industry) he was 'just' another young black actor. A few good roles here and there and as far as the industry is concerned
"hey cool, good luck to the guy".
Fast forward to 2016 now and here is a young Black man that managed to raise
$10,000,000 independently to shoot a film that he wrote, stars in the lead role and also directs.
Hollywood:
"hmmm" *begins to pique interest*
Said film gets rave reviews at it's premiere at the Sundance film festival.
Hollywood
"What do we have here then? There could be something to work with..."
Now add to that how Hollywood was stung bad by the negative PR of the all-white Oscars just gone. That makes this high profile and critically well received film with a Black cast, Black director and story about slavery pretty much a guaranteed shoe-in come Oscars and Awards season this year. Even if the film was terrible it would get awards recognition merely as a
"ok we fucked up last year, here take a couple of awards this year to make up for it".
Let's also sprinkle into this mix the huge media stories of innocent black men being killed by predominately White cops. Oh and also the high profile movements of groups such as Black Lives Matter. With all this, the industry KNOWS this film is gonna both do numbers at the box office AND be guaranteed awards recognition. Win-Win.No studio would turn that down.
So, said film drives a bidding war.. Fox offers
$17,500,000 for it.. Netflix even offers
$20,000,000 for it.
Hollywood:
"Whoa whoa whoa this 'new guy on the block' could be something after all. We wanna be in the business of Nate Parker.".
It's the HIGHEST AMOUNT EVER PAID FOR A FILM by a studio. And it's by a Black man. And about slavery.
All of the talking points above have created the perfect storm for it to be 'All Eyes On Nate'. Hell, just ONE of those many points above is enough to get the industry talking, let alone ALL of them. Hence, the understandable and genuine increased media scrutiny.
HOWEVER, thats not to say that due to all of those factors above somebody didn't have a grievance and wanted to bring him back down to the ground. A quick call or anonymous email to the industry press
"Hey, you know your new hero? Well..." And down comes the house of cards.
So who's to say if it was just the genuine increased media scrutiny that brought it to the fore or some other more nefarious reason. Bottom line, either way it's a fucked up situation for both him and the movie right now.
