Damn, sickle cell put this dude thru some serious shit

Killed my lil cousin. Lots of people don't understand how devestating the disease is and HOW PAINFUL. They come into the ER screaming for morphine and the doctors have to ensure themselves that they are't addicts before giving it to them. Lil cuz was one of the longest survivors in L.A. At his funeral a young woman spoke who said her lil brother wanted to be like lil cuz...and live as long as him.

Please tell us how, what, the parents shouldn't of gotten together?
Every black persons should be tested for the trait. That should be something required.

My brother is positive with the trait and I am negative. So I am free to create children with anyone.

People like my brother has to make sure their partner does not have the trait because there is over a 50% chance the child will have sickle cell if two people who have the trait produce a child

so what you're saying is, as hard as it is to find someone decent who matches and fits us out here in this crazy world, you aren't supposed to have kids with this amazing person because of this disease you both share?

Get all the way the fuck out of here

You know, people trip on interracial marriage or dating and I don't. Why? Because it's hard as fuck trying to find somebody out this bitch. Far be it for me to hold somebody else to my dating standards

I never knew about the testing for the trait.

But if its a known thing, why not test before bringing a child into the world who will suffer?

So you're going to make a mandatory law that says all black people need to be tested? That ain't going to end well.

Also...
How does that stop people from having random hook-ups with people and women keeping the kids from those random hook-ups?

70% of black children are born out of wedlock and a number of those aren't planned.

Having the the sickle cell trait is not the same as having the "sickle cell disease". Having only the sickle cell trait is harmless and has no effect on the individuals health. The problem only occurs when two people who have the "Sickle Cell Trait" produce children. Even though the trait is harmful to both parents they have 1 and 4 chance of producing a child with Sickle Cell.

You are said "Get all the way the fuck out of here" but fam, that would be your child you are talking about. If you knew that there was over a 1 and 4 chance of your child having a seriously debilitating disease that could be fatal and extremely painful, you would still try and conceive and put them through that?

That would be cruel fam and a bit irresponsible.

Knowing if you carry the trait would allow you to make decisions on whether you should date someone on a serious level with the intentions of being married and starting a family. At least you would know and have that option to make a decision that best for you and everyone involved.

Both parents with the Sickle Cell Trait may prevent them from having a child. For some that could be a deal breaker so it is better to know then not know

I'll make sure I share this.

We have 3 kids and never did any 'tests'. Maybe the questionnaire asking about our past family issues had sickle cell on it.
With three kids

Either one of you has the sickle cell trait
None of you have it
or both have it and you rolled the dice and won each time

But it is good to know if your children have the trait so that they are aware of the possibly of creating children with the disease.

Yea, this is something that I'll find out about. I am not aware of anyone in my family who has had sickle cell. My wife's side - Not so sure.

it is a sad and tragic situation finding out your child has sickle cell. I have seen a few friends who went through that ordeal. All of them said that if they knew they both had the trait they would not have conceived a child. To watch your baby girl or little man battle through that must be heart breaking, especially knowing it did not have to be that way.

Shitty man be ruining threads
Ruining a thread for being knowledgeable? Who wants to invest time and money into a partner just to find out that you both have the sickle cell trait? Now you have to decide if having kids are worth the risk long term.

For some people, adoption would be a deal breaker as they want their own kids.

At least knowing your options and the risk is better than not knowing.

At least there is a chance at a cure with sickle cell. A friend of mine had a daughter who had sickle cell pretty bad. Was often in the hospital. She had a bone marrow transplant from her sister in which cured her.

OK so my wife has the trait. I have what I thought was all my life, nothing. I found out I have the blood type Hemoglobin C. Mixing with someone with the trait our kids were at a 25% chance of having sickle cell.

What you need to understand is there's different forms of sickle cell.

My wife and I have two children, both with sickle cell. Both have the lighter form of the disease. Which is known as SC. They live normal lives but with pain.

Full blown sickle cell is SS form of it. As you see in the OP post. But there is no way I could see that coming. My condition of having Hemoglobin C, I never even knew I had. It is nothing, just mixing with a person with the trait, has a 25% chance.

Now two people with the trait will produce a child with SS.

But don't say just don't have a kid with someone with a trait. You just don't know what you have that can put you at risk of having a child with.

I have heard the same from so many, for decades. It's an absurd statement.

I had a white co-worker from Texas who carries the sickle-cell trait. His brother was in the hospital dying and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. Finally they tested him for sickle-cell, he was positive. The family was like that's impossible, we're white. The doctor was "yes, he does. You have black ancestors. There's even a famous race law named after your family. the Ashworth Act". I told him "I bet there was a lot of crying going on in the house that night". Funny thing is dude has a big ass green Irish Cross tattoo.

thalassemia is what I found out I have..its kin to sickle cell..when entering the military they check for sickle cell and the trait..I was clean... not until me and my then wife had a child that ended up having sickle cell did I discover that my mother had been diagnosed with thallasimia when she was a teenager, with no explanation as to what it was actually... not until I was over 45, 20 years after going to the dr regularly was I found to have it also... and that was a naturopathic doctor that saw it!!!. But my daughters sickle cell is fairly mild and has been pretty healthy all her life withe the exception of about 6 or 7 bad episodes( shes 26 now).

Weird story... I had to take an inmate to the hospital one day because he had a permanent erection. The doctors had to drain the blood from his dick. I didn't watch them do it but dude was screaming bloody murder.
He says that it's happened to him a few times throughout his life due to his sickle cell. Apparently permanent erections are symptom. God help you if you can't get to a hospital in time.

If two people have the Sickle Cell Trait the risk are what they are. You have a 1 and 4 chance of producing a child with Sickle Cell and is some cases over 50% chance. Now whether people take that kind of risk is up to them and their partner

For me personally, If I had the trait and my wife had the trait, we would not have kids. To bring a child in the world with that kind of disease I will need better than a 1 and 4 chance.

For African American, we should know if we have the sickle cell trait the same way we know our blood pressure and cholesterol level.

Same here. I have ONE sister in my family who carries the trait. She didn't find out until she was pregnant with her only child but had never tried to conceive again because of it.
Up until then, we'd never been aware of the disease and had never known anyone with it.

man I’m glad I made this post, because I never really knew what it was.
I didn’t have anyone close encounter(family nor friends) with it yet.
