I got a question for anyone to answer. For those who say that puerto ricans, cubans, etc.. don't acknowledge their black do you feel they say that only because of not wanting to identify with blacks/african americans or do you think that it's a nationality issue? To me black and white are not races or nationalities and neither is african-american because it's talking about two continents. Black and white are colors and in other countries of the world people don't describe themselves by color like we do in the U.S. but they go by nationality. Even if you asked a good amount of white people in the U.S. what are they then they'd be like I'm irish, dutch, german, etc. If you outside the U.S. and you aint commonly referred to as black but are used to using your nationality for identity then I understand why you would say you not black.

I've told people numerous times that race is nothing more than an institution created by europeans to categorize people. The shit does not exist. You can look up the definition of race and see how it tries to encompass a whole slew of folks in one shot.

IMO, the biggest fallacy with race is that of skin color. I'm brown skin but racially Im categorized as black. But how can that be. Im brown skin. Why wouldnt I be racially categorized as brown? Why does that label only apply to those of mezo-spanish descent. Look at any application you fill out when it asks what race you are. black/white/asian/hispanic/etc. But surely hispanic isnt a color. Neither is asian. So now I fundamentally have to believe that when I tell someone Im black, that means my cultural identification. At one point in time the white establishment in America called us negros. At another point in time we were referred to as colored. Then it was Afro-American. Now its black. The only label that we as a darker skinned people of African descent had control over was "black". Thats why I have an issue when someone just throws a label on you and say "you have to accept that" without proper analysis.

Now to the point of the racial identification, cultural identification, and nationality. When a person of asian descent says their korean, we accept that as their nationality. We never hear asians refer to themselves as yellow. Even though its safe to say that most of them share the same ancestry, they differentiate by their nationality. You never hear the phrase "Im a yellow person living here in China/Japan/korea". If you have then my apologies. They are stating their nationality as a point of their cultural/racial/tribal identification as well. Now lets take it to the Carribean. This cat told me he was dominican(from NY). He was darker than me but he had straight hair. Did he probably have some african ancestry in him. Yeah. Was it prevalent to his hair texture and facial features. Nah.Point being when someone tells me their nationality, I just leave it at that. When there is a heterogeneous element(meaning all types of skin colors and differnet backgrounds) known to that said nation, then more specific labeling may be appropiate. I wont shit on a Puerto Rican or Haitian or Jamaican for only claiming their nationality because thats where their point of cultural reference comes from. Whats the point of saying your a dark skinned/black Haitian when the predominant skin tone in Haiti is dark skinned. You are as your country is. I tell folks Im black but I also tell them Im AMERICAN because our cultural relevance/heritage whatever you want to call it was bred here.

We know very well of our skin tone. Although we have accents we are not stupid. We know we are black but we also know where we come from. When white people ask what I am I tell them Black then they ask where am I from I tell them puerto rico then they laugh and say "oh you are puerto rican then, not black".
