Idris Elba’s star has been rising in Hollywood in recent years thanks to critically acclaimed roles on HBO’s The Wire and the BBC series, Luther. His commercial appeal is growing, too, after being cast in Thor (2011), Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (2012), and Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming Pacific Rim (2013). The question for Elba now is – what next?

Yesterday, we learned that Sam Mendes has expressed doubts about directing another James Bond film after Skyfall, which sparked a debate in the comments about who should play James Bond after Daniel Craig’s tenure ends (he’s signed on for two more Bond films at the moment). One name that continues to pop up is Idris Elba, and now there’s reason to believe that it’s more than mere speculation.

According to Elba’s co-star in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and the newest “Bond girl,” Naomie Harris – courtesy of The Huffington Post - Elba met with longtime Bond movie producer Barbara Broccoli to discuss the possibility of him becoming the first black James Bond. I didn’t realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond. And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he’s a great guy.

Can you elaborate on the racist undertones? I watched them as a teen and don't remember that but the only black characters I could even name nowadays are Baron Samedi, whom I don't recall much outside of the golden gun and a portrayal of voodoo that I wouldn't be shocked being a part of what you're referencing, and whoever Halle Berry played.

Daniel Craig is the best Bond to date IMO and his box office numbers suggest he should prob stay in the drivers seat a while longer...I'd prob rather some new 007 story line featuring IE or even being written into the Bond story line along with Craig just to get the spinoff in position and more quickly than waiting on Craig to give it up. all had great potential to be an ongoing franchise but the easy rollins stories never got off the ground past devil in a blue dress. Alex Cross only went 2 movies with morgan freeman (theres talk of a sequel with tyler perry so he stint may be 2 as well.

And even tho blade was a trilogy by the third film blade took a back seat to two other characters (white) the studio wanted to spin off..

We've had then but their usually short lived.

About 10 years ago they were talking about Denzel being Matt Helm. (For you young bucks Matt Helm was the American version of James Bond played by Dean Martin). There was also an American caricature of Bond called Flint (James Colburn played Flint). So there are roles out there like Bond but not Bond. Plus isn't Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt from Mission Impossible James Bond? or Matt Damon's role as Jason Bourne?

They opened the door for anybody to be Bond when they pulled that "Bond is a codename" shit in the recent movies to explain why Bond was blonde/blue eyed Daniel Craig.
