Advertisers are mainly to blame for caving in so much and creating this culture where people fear they will lose ad money if they are not politically correct.
Not trying to be funny, did you watch the actual HBO version (broadcast, Go or Now) or did you watch it through some other means? I ask because I saw a clip on Youtube that was a lot brighter than what I watched on HBO Now.
For the record, I have an OLED tv which can cause very dark scenes to be dark. However that show was the first time I had the screen literally go pitch black at some points.
Hbo broadcast on a Samsung lcd. Hbo broadcast on an old crt. Was a bit lighter on the crt. It was dark but not too dark. Good balance to me so chaos of war was brought out in my opinion. Some have said other sources were better e.g. amazon prime.

Women are oppressed and treated like second class citizens. Their gender negatively affects their job opportunities, pay rates, police protection, health services, personal safety and many other areas that men could never fathom. The women here don't have the balls to challenge the root of the problem so they go after a talk show host instead.
Now suppose for a moment that this "outrage" gets the show cancelled. The controversy destroys Jimmy Fallon's career and takes The Roots down along with it. What really changes? Do women in the south get improved reproductive rights? Do more battered women's shelters get built? Do police chiefs who say shit like "Women wouldn't get raped if they didn't dress like sluts" get fired from their jobs? NO. None of that happens.
One of the dangers of social media is that gives the false impression that getting mad about something makes you an activist. No need to deal with dogs, fire hoses, jail or death. No need to organize rallies or commit acts of civil disobedience. Just speak out, get a few likes and suddenly you're some sort of social justice warrior. It might feel good and get you some respect, but nothing of any lasting value EVER gets accomplished that way. You might as well go outside and yell at the sun.
