Real answer: It's a storyline that came from Incredible Hercules. Seeds for it have been dropped since way back in the Ares mini-series, through Herc's Secret Invasion side-story, through the IH series.

It's a fairly self-contained event so I'm not sure what there is to retcon at the end.

If you liked Hercules you may like Chaos War.
