After dealing with this RED HULK BullShit for well over two years,

I have to say that this issue FINALLY ended this wack-ASS storyline kinda nicely.

Except for the very last page.
That shit was just way too cliched.

Wonder what this is leading to now....

Ross should either lead the Secret Avengers or the Thunderbolts (ha after his own name sake). Luke Cage should be on the regular Avengers. Ross could almost be like the 2nd Coming of Norman Osborn without the craziness.

SUPERMAN #702
just finish reading this reveiw here
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/46184:eek:

can't believe i didn't catch any of this when i read that issue:smh:

One of the accusations I hate seeing thrown around at people is the claim of "racism." So, I am loathe to do it here, so I am going to instead hurl a charge of "stupidity" at JMS for writing this comic book and to DC for publishing it. Were I not intent on reviewing this comic I would have tossed it after about 5 or 6 pages. For review purposes, I forced myself to finish it. This comic is so awful that I don't even think a review here can be long enough to truly get across all the problems with it.

The basic gist of the plot, so as it is, is that in this second part of the "Grounded" story arc, Superman continues walking across America to reconnect with the little people and today he strolls on into Detroit. Oddly enough, he is not being followed by our paparazzi. That right there puzzles me. Everyone seems to know that Superman is doing this but, yet, the media has enough self-control to just send Clark Kent along to write about Superman's journey. Really? Really? Also, oddly enough, the Detroit that Superman walks into has little to no street traffic, so he can walk down the middle of roads without having to avoid cars. It's almost like a bizarre dream. While in Detroit, the main plot involves Superman dealing with illegal immigration through the most subtly metaphorical episode since...oh....STAR TREK and the planet torn apart from racial strife over which side of the face was white and which was black. Or maybe I should mention the Sneetches? Either way...its a "club-the-reader-over-the-head" style story that irritates the hell out of me.

In this case, however, Superman encounters a SPACE-alien family living in Detroit disguised as humans. After they unsuccessfully attack him without justification with a huge giant robot (that somehow fits inside their modest little wood-frame 2-story in urban Detroit), Superman decides to preach to them about illegal immigration and then they argue back that he's just as much an alien as they are. What? Hem. Haw. Superman says it's not the same, but he's going to let them stay there at least until he figures out what to do with them. Because, you know, Superman is the American immigration czar and controls the lives of any alien immigrants he comes across.

He's not?

Well, then he must be a superior-minded pompous ass who's using his position and powers as a threat to this family. But surely Pa Kent taught Superman not to be like that. I must be reading this story wrong. But wait...

Superman later encounters an old, bald, toothless African-American man who lost his union job when the factories shut down. Argh. Then he kinda has a heart-attack and brilliant Superman avoids the hospital and flies the man to the alien immigrants from earlier in the story. See? Superman has figured out how to extort technology out of them. They have advanced technology there that can heal the old man. Of course, there's no reason for him to have assumed that their technology would work like that on a human, but let's not dwell on that. And let's not dwell on the implications of Superman arbitrarily deciding to save the life of one old man through extraordinary means while ignoring the many others. I guess that's one of the moral conundrums of "playing" God versus "being" God. But I mentioned that Superman extorted the technology out of the aliens. Basically, what Superman does here is demand that they use their technology to heal the old man and then require the aliens to use the billions of dollars worth of gold that they brought with them to Earth to reopen the factories and develop their advanced technology for use by us humans. So, everything is so syrupy sweetly wrapped in a bow. The aliens are after-the-fact "paying" for the right to immigrate here. The old man is healthy again and working at the new factory...as are his former co-workers. New technology is being developed and built to help further our society. And Superman can stand back and smile at another story of the great white savior who knows what is best for the lesser folk and he can start walking off into the sunset....while a menacing Batman looks on. Aren't we all happy now?

Oh...did I forget to mention what happened at the beginning of the issue that made me want to throw the comic away? Yeah, I did. That's the sequence whereby urban black youth (looking to be age-ranged from about 17 to 22) are shown playing basketball. Because, y'know, black kids like to play basketball. And there's one nerdy kid there with his nerd haircut, glasses, and a baggy basketball jersey hanging on his skinny body. Because, y'know, nerds are skinny and wear glasses. The other players, all teh kewl type buff, bald, tatted, etc., mock the nerd and won't let him play because obviously...well...obviously he sucks. Superman steps up in his increasingly un-heroic way and offers to play ball against all of them...including the nerd (who looks suspiciously just like Steve Urkel...because...y'know....all nerdy black kids look like Urkel). The ball players, though, surely aren't stupid. Right? That would be racist to portray them as STUPID street-talkin' basketball players in urban Detroit. So, they make sure and get a promise from Superman that he “ain't gonna fly”. Ah! Now they done gone and beat Superman in the game of street-smarts. Now it's all fair! Five or six street basketball players against Superman and his...super-strength, super-speed, invulnerability, heat vision, etc. Shoot yeah. That's fair. They look so smug because they know that since Superman “ain't gonna fly” then he'll be “E Z pickins”! So....Superman proceeds to use his powers (except for flyin') against these guys and easily defeats them and then, in that demeaning way that a parent might act with a child, he lets Urkel knock the ball out of his hand. And these adult men are so stupid that not a one of them challenges that. They just start treating Urkel like a basketball star because he knocked the ball out of Superman's hand. And Superman looks on in smug self-satisfaction.

The great white savior strikes again.

did any one catch any of this when they read the issue or is this all blown out of proportion:confused:

thanks for sharing Megazell.

Also does anyone have any ideas on how to fix superman and spiderman comics? We all think they suck but as of the moment I can't think of any good fixes for either.

Spider-Man has been pretty good since Brand New Day started. I mean this current arc sucks, but that's because Joey Q is writing it. Otherwise it's been heat. And I'm saying that as a person who doesn't even like the character.

Have Peter Parker go rogue for a couple years. Have him say fuck it and just start robbin banks and take over Kingpin turf and straight up become a supervillian. Straight up kill a couple his old foes and some second tier characters. After a year or two he can have an epiphany or change of heart and go back to being a goody two shoes.

Have Superman issue an ultimatum to the govt.s of earth that if they don't "get it together" he's gonna take over...

You would have to redesign the universe to fix both (all) characters.

I am not sure if anyone here is reading Spider-Girl. It's actually pretty decent. Not 100% good because you can 'feel' in the writing and production value that Marvel is not putting 100% commitment to it. But Peter and MJ's role in it is written really well.

Peter is older, a husband, a father, injured and works as a CSI officer for the police. This to me is the PERFECT job for him because it combines his affinity for science/technology and respect his need to fulfill his responsibility on the death of Uncle Ben. He's not Spider-Man anymore but he dons the costume from time to time to help his kid when she is in a pinch. Also, it's very interesting to see him in his civies meet up with other older heroes and retired/reformed villains in their civies.

Batman Beyond (show and comic) is a another great example of this.

Shadow Of The Batman (original run) is another example.

The characters have to age. The company heads DO NOT WANT THAT because they consider it too high of a gamble if it does not work out. Even though they can reset their universe with a fucking whim.

Erik Larsen said they can still write new stories of the classic Batman (Bruce Wayne), Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Superman (Clark Kent) but instead of trying to fit these characters into the modern age make the comics keep their time setting for each character respectively. Marvel did a great job with 'Untold Tales Of Spider-Man.' For those that don't know this was Peter Parker in the 60's and 70's sort of talking/telling stories about events that did not get recorded in his main books.

Think about how many fucking titles some of these characters have on their own. Imagine one of them is about their adventures in their youths while the next titles are/would be about the new person donning their mantle while they are there in their old age or dead and their legend lingering over their new counterpart.

Shit, Superman can be an immortal but his friends and family are not...right there you can have mountains of fucking content to work off of.

Think about this...how much more interesting is Superman (Kingdom Come) from JSA to the current Superman in his main book....?

Interesting idea. But I want the same sup but with a real world sensibilaty, take for example when wonder women kill Maxloard to stop him form controlling sup, why when he found out he he was all  and was  at her for doing that. Superman has seen all kinds of battles where millions have died by one person and how how bad people life are after they have to live with out a father or mother etc. for him to be all :hmm: at wonder women seems out of place with him. It should of been him  at them not being able to bring him to justice but  she stop him for controlling the most powerful being to probably killing million if not billion of people. At that part about that aliens family he should have been my Pa was like use your gift to help others, they could have made super space suits that protected astronaut from radiation and other things. instead of being well I leave you alone till I figure out what to do with you:hmm:.

Have Peter Parker go rogue for a couple years. Have him say fuck it and just start robbin banks and take over Kingpin turf and straight up become a supervillian. Think i have enough of the black suit spidy stuff but I think in the Ultimate line, there doing a great job with him

Interesting idea. But I want the same sup but with a real world sensibilaty...

DC just won't do it. Plus, to be honest with you...it would not make any sense for him to all of sudden grow a 'common sense' approach to life.

Superman can't relate to humans. Period. He just can't...the more they fight this and say that he can...the worst his book gets.

It should be a simple formula that writers can wring out a lot of stories from.

Superman: I can't relate to you but I will do my best to help you.

^ That should be Superman...the problem is that they let him make mistakes that stem from his inability to relate.

Sometimes they write him super smart...sometimes they write him super gullible...sometimes they write him super naive...but he is never super consistent.

Spider-Man has been pretty good since Brand New Day started. I mean this current arc sucks, but that's because Joey Q is writing it. Otherwise it's been heat. And I'm saying that as a person who doesn't even like the character.

well, i like the character and totally agree....i REALLY hated that Mephisto crap, and had no intention of checkin BND, but damiit if they haven't written some great stories....the current one sucks ass tho

Superman, can't be fixed though, and has only been a truly interesting character a few times in his publication history...

Just a heads up the Kick-Ass thread has been listed on Google, AVG, Avast and other anti-virus sites as malware site. The last person that posted in there laced it.

Superman: I can't relate to you but I will do my best to help you.

^ That should be Superman...the problem is that they let him make mistakes that stem from his inability to relate.

He CAN'T relate. And he knows it.

But he TRIES. To him, that makes all the difference. Look at his relationship with Bruce. Superman/Batman books narrate ad nauseum about his inability to relate to Bruce, but he respects Bruce all the same. That's how he goes about treating all of mankind.

For that second part I meant to say 'They don't LET him make mistakes...'

What you stated is true for some writers. These last books he's been acting like Mr. Everybody.
