~ Comics New releases ~

It's easy to pick apart anything if you have a mind to. I could have you list your faves and pick them apart and belittle those choices if I so chose, but that's not why I'm here.

True.

In any case these are the books I'm collecting:

Major Publishers
Heavy Metal
Farscape
2000 A.D.
Scarlet

Local Publishers
Diamond Comics
Vigilantes

However, the cat asked what was good in Marvel. There are things that he may find enjoyable. Many people do. Felt it was worth it to give him my take, as opposed to just telling him that everything sucks and moving on.

Well, I did more than say things "sucks." I gave him a break down of what's going down in the structure of story writing for Marvel (and others).

Sounded to me like he's looking to invest some time and possibly money (maybe?) into reading some books. I'm of the mind that when "newcomers" are looking to get into something that it's best to be honest about what they are getting into otherwise that thing they want to get into may lose more than just one patron (word of mouth...).

As far as my picks. I like what I like. You might not and that's cool, it's the beautiful thing about opinions. But having read your posts over time it's pretty clear that your mind is going to be made up regardless, so I'm not going to try to disabuse you of your notions.

I don't mind a discourse and on here I have listened/read a few ppl's ideas and taken a look at the books they mentioned and I have also responded in kind.

If you going to engage me (or anyone) just speak plainly and say things like 'this is why I like it' (which you have) but don't leave out the cons though. Comics (story, art, coloring..etc) are a subjective subject. The business of them is not though.

Personally, I'm open-minded towards books. I don't expect everything to be a slave to longstanding continuity. It's just a part of the game. There are things that I may hate, like OMD for example, but if the stories are good to me after, then they're good to me after.

See here is the divide for me and you. That part of the game notion means what exactly for a reader? That they should expect to pay for a book and get turds and be OK with it because the book may get good again, one day? Or does that mean that we should stay a alert and read previews and get deep into the writers/artist/editors and try to avoid the pitfalls of changing of the guard?

Mine you I'm not talking about storyline attempts...because the one you sited OMD - WAS NOT A STORYLINE decision - That was boardroom nonsense brought into the story of Spider-Man. There was no hiding it, there.

Your comments about X-Force, which is more about the characters and characterizations more than anything leads me to believe that you've never actually read it, but that's inconsequential really. As for the rest, I don't ask myself anything before I open a book, I just open it...and read it.

Nah, I read it and in Jim Hanley's U and other spots, I've told cats what was going to happen 3 to 4 issues ahead and I've been correct so far with minor mishaps but that book is just way too predictable...and late...late like a motherfucker.

For me, it all boils down to "did I enjoy reading this."

*shrug* That's just how I operate, not expecting it to be the way everyone operates.

Actually, you do a little more than that. You actively forgive the previous history of the book you're reading...

I don't expect everything to be a slave to longstanding continuity.

Not everyone is like that. When ppl walk in and see 'Amazing Spider-Man' or 'Batman' - They expect A LOT of familiarity. ESPECIALLY if it's a flagship book in the main universe.

Happens all the time, I've seen ppl put books back down they were going to buy after the clerk or someone gives them a little recap.

"Word, Doctor Octopus is back from the dead?"
"Word, Wolverine got his adamantium back?"
"Word, Nightwing and Starfire are not married/dating?"
"Word, Doomsday is back again? I thought he was at the source wall?

But yeah, homie, no offense, but you are a mainstream hater IMO, and it's supported by your belief that globally mainstream books are just bad. Which, if nothing else, would be statistically and logically improbable considering the sheer amount of mainstream books. It's not meant as an insult, merely an observation.

How is it improbable that mainstream comics are not bad?

Just because ppl bought into it does not make it a good book.

How many people bought TF3 tickets and think that is has a good story? (currently at 540 plot holes)

How many people bought Phantom Menace Tickets and thought it had a good story?

Just because shit is making money don't mean it's good.

To this day ppl are still buying DVD rewinders...:smh:

Sooooo Harley Quinn now has augmented super strength.

Blackhawks can now transform into jets....

Starfire with Blackfire's origin?

Soooooo Red Arrow did drugs by accident and it was weed?

Are we really suppose to be that open minded?

I like the cast of X-Factor and Peter David is a master of characterization. He's managed to turn around throwaway characters like Layla Miller, Shatterstar, and M and make them actual, interesting, characters. He's also, IMO, the only person who knows how to really make the standard X-Factor characters shine, no one else can do Strong Guy justice.

His pacing is normally spot on too, which is rare in these days of writing for the trade.

X-Factor is strong on one facet of what the X-Men books used to be very good at: character development. But that's it for the most part. It's like the book is a placeholder. Very little action, very little real storytelling, just angsty back-and-forth to no real purpose.

The one character I actually believe that has a lot of potential is Layla Miller, but they just keep stretching out the mystery ad infinitum and it's gotten boring. Maybe now that the Scarlet Witch is back there'll be some progress, but eh.

Your are right about X-Factor being the black sheeps of the X-Men Universe.
I recall around the time they were all making a huge deal about Hope being the first child born after "No More Mutants". But around that same time Syrin was pregnant (with a dupe baby but we didn't know that) and it was like no one cared.

You know a book is is a steady downward spiral when the writers suddenly decide to invent a gay couple out of nothing just to try to push sales. :smh:

No Booster Gold?

But also, no Booster Gold, JSA, Superman/Batman, Adventure Comics, The Spirit, Doc Savage, Justice Society Of America, Secret Six, Gotham City Sirens, Power Girl, THUNDER Agents, Titans, Xombi or Zatanna. No sign of Wally West. No And no sign of a Captain Marvel or any of his family.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/06/10/those-52-dc-comics-issue-ones-and-what-and-who-is-missing/

Booster Gold does not sell enough action figures.

:smh: I guess I'll delete The Spirit and Batman Beyond issues I haven't read off of my computer now.

Nah. I would read them. BB is solid. I'm sure DC will pick them up later (not 100% on this) but I think they are going to integrate ALL of theirs Us together. Spirit is suppose to show up in the Grifter book along with The Fly and SHIELD.

The first launch is to focus on their flagships...

I think Booster is going to be the only one that knows there is a change in the U...in a very similar fashion that Psycho Pirate was Crisis only vocal witness in the new U.

They do this so that if it FAILS SUPER FUCKING BAD...then can have a plot device to bring the old U back.

Terry is suppose to show up in Batman main U story line coming up.
