Wow, this is a good. I remeber that episode when the Romulans(with a female captain) were flying in that vessel - which later classified as a Klingon battlecruiser, I was like WTF  were the Romulans doing with a Klingon cruiser?!?

What makes KICK ASS so good? I check out one issue, Skimmed through it, saw a lot of curses and gore. The same with THE BOYS. I see a lot of curses and gore but is the story good? I heard people going nuts over them and they always say because it's "Adult".

Is it really good or is it just Shock value? If it is good then What would be a good starting point to really get into these 2 comics?

Sensationalism; kids doing adult shit. I read the first 4 issues and stopped. These are comic books and that's understood but when kids are hacking and slashing and bathing in blood and gore, cussing like drunk sailors in a whore house and the grownups are either cheering them like heroes or helping them do MORE hacking and slashing...I dunno...art imitating reality? Or the other way around?

Shit, this is a porn board, right? This aint the place to be doing soapbox social commentary. The writing is good, the story is good and the hype is off the scale. It's a good read but I get enough hacking and slashing and bloodbaths with the adult heroes

Good point. I don't totally agree. It's a fanboy dream come to nightmarish realization for that book. If you've been collecting comics you mostly likely had the conversation about "What powers would you want?" or "What would you do in "insert superheroes' name" position?"

Modern mainstream comics have a "teeter totter" flow in perspectives of justice and/or heroics. They either go from "redemption at all cost" to "punishment at all cost." To keep the books interesting they put some serious villains that do "adult" things that force the hero to make a decision that will define them. Shit, even villains fluctuate from villain to hero back to villain in this paradigm.

KICKASS and books like it are simply a reaction to the "teeter totter" flow...If a villain like "Joker" was real would you really try to rehabilitate him after he blew up a bus full of kids with candy explosives? If your girlfriend was killed by a villain because of your actions could you really go back to being a happy go lucky man (Spider-Man) or would you be putting down these creeps before it gets worse?

Yeah the guts and gore are gimmick but it goes to the heart of the question: "What makes this person a superhero?"

All what you say is the nature of comics because they are basically figments of the imaginations of their creators, so there is truth in what you say--measured truth. The difference between Spider-Man/Batman etc and Kick Ass is that the focus of these characters (or protagonists if you prefer) are kids not old enough to form such adult decisions. Indeed, the writer indirectly implies such in several instances. Kick Ass may be a genuflect of whatever idiot at the top of the totem may 'infer' to his subordinates in a business sense (in this case the small indie Icon), but in a lifestyle sense it imparts on (some) young boys' minds what it would be like to take matters into their own hands, thus my use of the phrase life imitating art.

Books like Kick Ass coarsens the mind in (some of) the young who are at an impressionable age. With the internet now becoming a 'third parent' in many households and outside sources (video games, comics, social websites, etc) having more space and stealing more time away from parents, kids are increasingly being influenced by those sources.

You've made some very good points Meg. I have a high regard for your opinion on comics. I'll end my rant here because continuing this conversation in this venue takes away from what most people come here for--comics.

I think these conversations are healthy for the thread too. Like comic shop talk.

When it comes to the parenting issue you brought up. I personally, don't care what any parent says, it's their job to filter and shape their children. Will they be influenced by outside sources? No doubt. That's life. It's a parents job to help them assimilate this barrage and help them understand who they are and where this stimuli belongs.

Kickass is a good read but it ain't no Watchmen :) The most profound issue has to be the recent revelation of Hitman and Hitgirl.
