Comedy: Dane Cook finally talks about that infamous LOUIS episode

Louis C.K. Explains Dane Cook Appearance On 'Louie' To A.V. Club

Ever since Dane Cook appeared on "Louie" in August to dramatize a resolution to the real-life tension between himself and Louis C.K., the genesis of the episode has been unknown. Now, in a lengthy interview with The A.V. Club, C.K. reveals what happened behind the scenes.

The "Louie" creator and star, who was nominated for a Best Actor Emmy this year, originally intended the episode "Oh Louie/Tickets" to revolve around Lady Gaga, whom C.K. admires ("I think she’s an artist"). However, he was unable to get through to Gaga.

But perhaps this was for the better, as it allowed C.K. to focus on the controversy between himself and Cook in real life that stems from accusations that Cook stole material from C.K's stand-up act.

He told The A.V. Club:

Last year I had Robert Kelly on the show playing my brother. Robert and Dane are very close friends, and he was opening for Dane somewhere on the road when I asked him to come and shoot a scene with me. So he told Dane he needed to leave his tour. I think he just told him he was going to be on TV, and Dane said, "Ooh, what show?" and he told me that Dane looked a little sad and that Dane said, "You know, the sad part is that I’d like to be in a TV show with Louie. I like him." So when I heard that, it kind of stuck with me and I thought, "Why not put Dane in the show? How do I put Dane Cook on this show?"

Both Cook and C.K. were willing to confront the tension head-on, and Louis wrote the scene himself, attempting to take the point of view of Cook. However, Cook wanted to bring more levity to the scene where the two discuss the plagiarism accusations -- which C.K. refused.

...I wrote him back and said, “No to all of that, I have no interest as portraying you as a level-headed person, not at all interesting to me.” I said, "This is really about you and me having this moment, and it’s going to be really interesting to people the way it’s written."

Cook acquiesced immediately, and "nailed it."

However, the one suggestion that C.K. did take from Cook was to place the scene at Madison Square Garden instead of at the New York comedy club Caroline's. At first C.K. balked, but when he realized the comedic potential of an ominous place like MSG, he ended up using a room in the massive arena as the setting for the scene.

Be sure to read the highly entertaining and informative A.V. Club interview with C.K., in which he discusses the second season of "Louie" at length. The Dane Cook story is found in part 3, but click over to part 1 and part 2 for surprisingly detailed accounts of each episode.

Dont know why people hate this cac so much. I like "Vicious Circle" was really funny to me.

Well shit it was. I said funny to me. You don't have to like it.

just surprised...

no shots:D

most people I meet who like him are white and he caters to that comedic sensibility and his audience mad loyal to dude.

I just find him derivative and not in a good way...

he like a poor man's Jim Carrey...

but then again I cant fucking stand Kevin Hart either so...

My mom explained it best. Whats you find funny is usually a reflection of whats going on in your life. First time I heard Cook I was in College. He is really popular with college kids. And since then I have developed a cynical sarcastic since of humor. Its hard for me to enjoy black comedians any more because I dont related to anything they are saying. In fact the only black comedians stand up wise I like are Chris Rock and Hannibal Burrus. On Pandora Im usually listening to Louie Ck, Daniel Tosh, Jeff Gaffigan, and George Carlin.

Interesting cause I actually like Louie Ck, Jeff Gaffigan, and George Carlin:D

And TRUST that Comic View comedy linage aint for me either.
thats what K. Hart sounds like to me.

But I categorize Cook with the "white" version of that kind of repetitive, unoriginal, frat boy comedy...

but to each his own, Dane has made me laugh on occasion though.
and because of THIS appearance I will definitely try to give him another listen.

Dane cook is seinfeld-esqe.... as seinfeld pokes at everyday life... Cook just tells everyday life in an interesting way... also its weird cuz a lot of his jokes are inside jokes from his old standup... like when that drunk dude came up on stage and said "lets play whose in my mouth" (vicous circle)

Hes really fallen off though since his parents died...

Never got Cook but I did like the "Louie" episode he was on. Louie is a great all around talent.

'Louie' season 4 will be delayed until 2014

Count us among the comedy nerds who are really bummed out this week: First, NBC announced that season 4 of Community will be delayed, and now Louis C.K. says his FX show Louie will take an extended hiatus until the spring of 2014, when it will return for its fourth season.

During a conference call with reporters today, the comedian said that the decision to take a break was his own. “The last three seasons have been this surge of fun and work and stories and it’s been great, but I want the show to keep getting better,” he said. “That’s my goal, and I don’t want it to be making the donuts, I want it to be something that comes from somewhere important and stays funny.”

It’s been an especially busy year for C.K. In addition to writing, producing, and starring in Louie, getting invited to the White House, winning this year’s Emmy for comedy writing, and selling Tig Notaro’s comedy album on his web site, he’s also touring nonstop through February 2013, which may have also prompted him to take this hiatus. In June, C.K. told EW that most of his income comes from stand-up. “I’m going to make a s–load of money on the road,” he said. “I make fine money on the show, but the road is a hell of a lot more.” (His most recent tour sold $4.5 million in tickets, over just two days.)

He also believes that his reputation as a stand-up comedian has earned him more creative freedom on television. “I always looked at Woody Allen as a great guide: [He] had his own voice that was sought after because of his stand-up,” he explained. “And because of his stand-up, when he wanted to do something this way, they would let him do it.” FX certainly seems to be willing to let him experiment. We’re anxious to see how the show changes after two years.

Dane Cook is a funny guy. But I've seen the videos on youtube from a couple years back (taken down now), and he clearly stole from Louis CK, almost verbatim. Why, I'm not exactly sure, because he has alot of original material that is funny.

Contrary to popular belief tho, a lot of black people like his comedy tho, humor is colorblind fam, this is why white folks can laugh at themselves when a black comedian is telling those "white people and black people are different...." jokes :dunno:

In my personal experience tho, I went to see Dane Cook at Madison Square Garden, a huge venue we've all heard of, at the height of his success, and dude sucked. He came out a whole hour late, and told all the jokes I'd been watching on youtube, dvds, already, and on top of that, when he decided to stay an extra 15 minutes to "make up" for his lateness, he told some more jokes we'd all heard before. People in the audience were telling the shit better than him. My sister was like his biggest fan, but between the garbage performance, and a $80 t-shirt, she got completely turnt off dude.

Fuck Dane Cook

That is a great parody. His act a lot of the time seems like a bunch of non sequiturs machine gunned at you with occasional 90's pop culture references sprinkled in for good measure.
But i can't say he doesn't have his moments (always loved the bank job bit he did). He reminds me a lot of Family Guy in that respect with the latter referencing the 80's instead.

Just like Mad TV did with Dane though they were equally ethered by southpark in their cartoon wars episodes. :)

Dane gets rough deal though

The Bank Heist classic :)
