Walkout signals Comcast workers' displeasure
LABOR | One-day demonstration stems from union vs. non-union disagreement

November 16, 2007
BY FRANCINE KNOWLES fknowles@suntimes.com

A continuing labor dispute involving workers at Comcast's West Cortland Street facility who've accused the cable provider of discriminating against minority employees, escalated into a one-day walkout Thursday.

Nearly 80 workers who provide video, high-speed data and telephony services to roughly 500 customers daily staged the walkout because of a lack of progress in contract talks, said International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 21 business representative Jerry Rankins.

A Comcast spokeswoman said there was no customer impact and that about 40 workers walked out.

IBEW Local 21 represents the mostly African-American cable installers, service repair and line maintenance workers at the Cortland facility.

The union, which has accused the company of violating labor laws, is seeking pay and benefit parity with non-union workers.

Rankins contends workers make $3 to $5 an hour less than their non-union counterparts.

"We want to let Comcast know that we're dead serious about getting what's fair," he said. "These workers are asking to be treated as any other worker that performs the same job."

The union's contract expired May 31.

Earlier this year, the union filed a complaint with the Chicago Cable Commission accusing Comcast of violating the city's cable ordinance, which bars pay discrimination. The union also alleged the company is violating its cable franchise agreement and the City Council's 2002 resolution authorizing the transfer of the cable television franchise to Comcast.

Comcast has denied the allegations and accused the union of taking the action in an attempt to influence collective bargaining.

Late Thursday, Comcast issued this statement: "We continue to bargain with the union in good faith -- and met with them again today -- in the hopes of reaching an agreement that is fair to both Comcast and our employees. Comcast emphatically denies that the employees at Cortland Avenue have been treated differently because they are predominately African American."

The Chicago City Council earlier this year adopted a resolution calling for Comcast to appear at a hearing on the matter and produce documents and other records showing the classifications, rates of pay and pay ranges for all employees at each of its Chicago facilities.

The union has sought a hearing before the cable commission, but one has not been scheduled, said Rankins, who rallied with workers outside City Hall.

Contract talks between the union and Comcast are set to continue Tuesday.

A National Labor Relations Board hearing will take place Nov. 29, Rankins said.

:angry::angry:Fuck Comcast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank You! You took the words out of my mouth! I found out the CEO Brian Roberts makes $20,000 per hour so three hours of work for him in one day is a decent salary for anyone else.

DAMN:smh:

It's ok to get the cheese but atleast share it with the rest of the rats!

PLUS the bills just went up 4% Nationwide - Nuff Said

Comcast sucks ass...they need to learn how to install the fuckin' cable properly before they go out on strike.

Damn...the week I finished my book my Comcast cable was fucking down. Not only that my email still doesn't work...

But what other options are there in the Chi? I refuse to get satellite and WOW Cable isn't close to a consideration.

I hate to admit it, but we don't have too many options in Chicago; I've heard from some people I know on the north side that WOW is pretty fucked up, as well. We don't have enough competition in the market; that's really what the problem is.

All I know is after talking to tech support somehow my alternate e-mail addresses got deleted. They offered no explination as to why this occured. They did restore them though so no biggie. Well then they downgraded my service from 6mbps to 4mbps and still couldn't offer a reason as to why they did so. Comcast is bullshit but the alternatives aren't much better.

i pay like 140 a month....got he platinum packeage.
if i dont have cable....then i wont be able to get a reception at all....even with a good antenna.
comcast has the whole city wired the fuck up.
they block a lot of shit so youll be forced to get their service.
something huh?

funny thing about me is....i spend more hours on my computer than i do in front of the tube.
most of the movies thats on cable ive seen online already....or ive burned to blank disk.

i was thinking about working as a tech for comcast in the past....but now after reading this....imma have to pass.

I work for Comcast as well, for all of those who want competition, soon and very soon AT&T will be rolling out it's U-Verse service in some parts of Chicago. It runs on a FTTN (FIBER TO THE NODE) network architecture and brings video, high-speed internet, and telephony via Fiber Optics Cable to within 3000 ft. of your home. They run it twisted pair to coax and right to the back of your t.v. or box.....

It's Coming - Hundreds of Comcast techs have switched over to At&t in chicago to help At&t bring it out faster. Obviously because of comcast is hiring more people.

Read up on it.... Crazy azz internet speed capabilities....
