Dark Angel (1983)

The story of a man who seems to have it all but longs for one special thing more - a mysterious woman. The woman appears to him several times, leading him through various sexually explicit encounters. Some are fun, some are raucous, and some are dangerous and even disturbing.

By the mid-1980's, it took a pair of maverick movie makers to briefly revive porn's dissipated capacity to shock with this warped delight. Director Peter Vanderbilt and writer/producer Pablo Cairo, who might be one and the same for all I know, completed this film independently in 1983. Yet it would take them almost three years to find general distribution – through industry giant VCA – in a slightly watered down version.

Chronicling the downfall of one time golden boy Lee Keller obsessing over a mystery woman, they wear their richly varied cinematic influences (ranging from Jess Franco and Jean Rollin to Sam Fuller) on their sleeves. A gutsy central performance by Jamie Gillis, hardcore's Harvey Keitel, really keeps the film together, helping it over the occasional rough spot such as a slow build-up with gratuitous group sex padding, scored with horrible muzak to boot. Thankfully, this is the last helping of conventional carnality the movie has to offer.

The flick kicks into high gear as Gillis loses his sanity over dark dame Desiree Lane (never shown to greater advantage) who indeed turns out to be a disciple of the Dark One. Hey, with a title like that, I really don't believe I might be divulging any well-kept secrets here ! In rapid succession, our man Jamie gets royally ravished in the local loony bin's nympho ward (shades of SHOCK CORRIDOR), coolly witnesses gal pal Lynx Cannon's staged gang rape and goes totally balmy in a stylized S&M bar setting, brutally biting the nipple off the evening's unlucky whipping girl ! I guess that screwing a demon is about the only way any devoted pervert could hope to top that. Gillis and Lane do just that in a climax that is both eerie and romantic in equal measure, with billowing white curtains and a color scheme straight out of CAFE FLESH.

Blown up from a 16mm negative, this moodily photographed film has a gorgeously grainy texture quite uncommon to contemporary carnality. Too bad, its visionary creators disappeared without a tracé following just a few more mundane videos with the off-beat DREAMS OF NATASHA being perhaps the most memorable of the bunch.

I downloaded this film from ed2k last week and I watched it on the weekend.
Wow! This film has everything. C.J. Laing has sex with a champagne bottle.
Later she gets well and truly fisted. Then she tops it off by doing the
most amazing deep-throat with the huge Tony Perez coming in her mouth.

There is a bit of a story behind the copy I'm posting.

The version on ed2k was a fairly low res VHS rip. I liked the film so much
I went looking for a better quality version. Luckily, Mac (The One & Only
Godfather) provided! The original torrent was from bigdawwg.

I watched the two versions side by side and the low res version from
ed2k is more complete! This is ironic since the DVD rip version is sold
as having all controversial scenes spliced back in (which is true) but
they skipped the first 5 or 10 seconds at the start where the husband
is yelling obscenities at his lover before the titles appear. It's not
crucial to the plot or anything but I like things to be complete if possible
so I spliced in the missing part. I also removed a couple of frames
which the restorers seem to have spliced in by accident in the DVD
release. Just before the champagne bottle scene starts there are a few
frames that jump to the bondage scene which should not be there.
It is noticeable since it makes the audio pop badly at that point (and
it's not in my reference copy). Anyway, all fixed.

So here is the most complete and best quality version of this film
that you are likely to see around!

One of the smash hits of seventies Manhattan hardcore, Anyone But My
Husband established the kink queen reputation of its star, C.J. Laing.
C.J. plays a wife out for sexual adventures behind cheating hubby R. Bolla's
back. Her experiences include being strung up and whipped, leaving nice
big marks. She deep throats Tony "the Hook" Perez, who has a dick so
enormous it gives John Holmes a run for his money. Bree Anthony fists
C.J. as she's swallowed Tony's cock down to his balls. Certain scenes
were excised from this film even during its theatrical run, but this
uncensored version contains all of the kinky scenes you've only heard
about!
