Chloe Dykstra Explained Why She Didn’t Participate In AMC’s Investigation Into Chris Hardwick

Chris Hardwick.

In June, Dykstra wrote a Medium post describing emotional abuse from an anonymous ex-boyfriend, though the allegations were quickly tied to Hardwick. The subsequent fallout of that post was that Hardwick was fully removed from the Nerdest properties he founded and fired from his duties as The Talking Dead host, the talk show that airs after new episodes of The Walking Dead.

Earlier this week, AMC reinstated Hardwick as the show’s host after an investigation into the allegations and despite naming a replacement for himearlier in the month. Yvette Nicole Brown had even replaced Hardwick at the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panels earlier in the month.

On Thursday, Dykstra posted on Twitter a message that shed some light on that investigation. Though she didn’t mention AMC by name, she explained that she didn’t cooperate with an investigation because she doesn’t believe in “an eye for an eye” and her initial post was simply a way to “move on” from that period in her life.

“I had been adamant since I came forward with my essay that I never set out to ruin the career of the person I spoke about,” Dykstra wrote. “I could have provided more details, but chose not to. I have said what I wanted to say on the matter, and I wish to move on with my life. For that reason, I chose not to participate in the investigation against the person I spoke of. I do not believe in an eye for an eye, and therefore I have only shared my evidence with those who I felt should see it.”

Dykstra refused to use Hardwick’s name in the statement, but claimed she wanted to talk to him about the incidents but things only got worse for her when she tried to communicate through text message.

“I wish I had been able to have had a private conversation with the person I spoke about in my essay,” she wrote. “Reaching out to him over text made me vulnerable, and ultimately ended up in a tabloid article where said texts were chopped up and spun to discredit me.”

Dykstra said she hoped her statement would help “the hatred, the name-calling” and “death threats” stop and return to a more “productive discourse.” Hardwick hasn’t tweeted since the allegations were made public, though three ex-girlfriends have come forward to deny they were abused by Hardwick. He’s expected to return to the AMC airwaves on August 12, when Fear The Walking Dead has its midseason return.

A clearly emotional Chris Hardwick returned as the host of the AMC series “Talking Dead” on Sunday night.

“I really just want to take a minute and I want to say that I’m so appreciative to be standing here right now, and I want to thank you, ‘The Walking Dead’ community, for all your support over these past couple months,” Hardwick said at the opening of the show. “This show is not just a job to me, this is a vital part of my life, this has been a sanctuary these last seven years we’ve been here.”

“It’s been with me through good times and bad and I’m so grateful to the fans, producers and the amazing casts of both of these shows for allowing me to come here and be a part of this community every week,” he continued. “This is what this is, a community, and we’re on the precipice of a lot of changes on both ‘Walking Dead’ shows in the coming weeks and months, and I am so looking forward to going on that journey with you. And I’ve said the following words a million times, countless times, and I’ve never been more thankful than I am in this moment to say to you: I am Chris Hardwickand this is ‘Talking Dead.’”

Hardwick was suspended from hosting the aftershow back in June after his ex-girlfriend, Chloe Dykstra, posted an essay accusing Hardwick of being emotionally and sexually abusive during their relationship. Following an internal investigation, AMC reinstated Hardwick in the end of July.

“We take these matters very seriously and given the information available to us after a very careful review, including interviews with numerous individuals, we believe returning Chris to work is the appropriate step,” AMC said in a statement at the time.

The network tapped Yvette Nicole Brown to sub for Hardwick as the interim host of “Talking Dead” amid the initial uproar over Dykstra’s claims. Brown, a frequent and popular guest on “Talking Dead,” hosted the Aug. 5 “Walking Dead” Season 9 preview special. Brown also served as the moderator for the San Diego Comic-Con panels for both “The Walking Dead” and “Fear the Walking Dead,” a role Hardwick has held for years.

AMC has still not set a date for the return of “Talking with Chris Hardwick,” the season premiere of which was pulled from the network’s schedule following Dykstra’s accusations.

A female executive producer and a number of staffers have quit Talking Dead after AMC reinstated Chris Hardwick as host of the talk show.

The producer and a 'handful' of the show's 25-person staff left their jobs in protest after Hardwick was accused of abusing ex-girlfriend Chloe Dykstra.

It was revealed in June that Hardwick, 46, was the ex-boyfriend that Dykstra, 29, claimed had controlled and sexually assaulted her on a regular basis.

AMC temporarily removed Hardwick as host of the talk show, which discusses episodes of The Walking Dead, and launched an investigation.

Two weeks ago the network announced Hardwick would be returning to work.

'We take these matters very seriously and given the information available to us after a very careful review, including interviews with numerous individuals, we believe returning Chris to work is the appropriate step,' it said in a statement.

Hardwick and staffers of Talking Dead had a 'very emotional' meeting on Wednesday, according to The Wrap.

Sources said that Hardwick gathered the staff and apologized for the scandal. They described his demeanor as 'apologetic and contrite'.

Hardwick also reportedly told staff members he would have one-on-one meetings with anyone who wanted to address additional concerns.

This week Dykstra tweeted that she still stands by 'every single word' of her essay

In the essay titled Rose-Colored Glasses: A Confession, Dykstra said she experienced 'long-term abuse' by her ex-boyfriend, who she said was 20 years older than her. The actress wrote that she met him at a convention when she was in her early twenties.

Dykstra, an actor and cosplayer, wrote that the relationship 'started out poorly' and that her boyfriend had given her a set of rules she had to follow within the first two weeks after they started dating.

Hardwick will return to Talking Dead, on which he is pictured in this undated file photo, for its premiere on August 12

Some of them included her reserving her nights for her ex. Dykstra said because he had a busy schedule, she rarely saw her friends.

'I was to not have close male friends unless we worked together. All photos of male friends were to be removed from my apartment. This was heartbreaking for me, as my best friend happened to be male,' she wrote about rule number two.

Dykstra was also not allowed to have alcohol, because her boyfriend was sober. Hardwick has often discussed his struggles with alcohol addiction.

'Before we began dating he said, "I noticed you have a glass of wine with dinner. That's going to stop,'" she wrote.

According to the actress, other rules included not speaking in public places because he thought 'people recognized him and were listening to our conversations.'

'Our dinners out were usually silent, him on his phone,' she added.

Dykstra also said she wasn't allowed to take photos of them together. While her boyfriend eventually loosened up on that rule, she still always had to ask for his permission first.

'These were just a few of them. And I made the choice to accept his controlling behavior, as he'd just left his long-term girlfriend and I assumed that he was going through some serious emotional discomfort. This was a huge mistake,' she wrote.

Dykstra also accused her ex of sexually assaulting her on a regular basis before their breakup in 2014

The essay stated that the man would leave Dykstra in hotel rooms while he attended events and he forced her to take an on-camera job at his company. Dykstra wrote that she was against working for a significant other but she took the position because she was 'scared to upset him'.

'I accepted the job, but I refused payment for my work, feeling uncomfortable about the whole thing (though the lovely folks at his company eventually forced me to take a check). By this time, like I said, I was terrified to piss him off- so I did what he said,' she posted.

Dykstra also accused her ex of sexually assaulting her on a regular basis before their breakup in 2014.

'I was expected to be ready for him when he came home from work...Every night, I laid there for him, occasionally in tears. He thought the whole idea was funny,' she wrote. 'To be fair, I did go along with it out of fear of losing him.'

Dykstra said after three years of 'being snapped/yelled at constantly, very rarely being shown any affection' she ended the relationship. Her ex, according to Dykstra, retaliated by blacklisting her.

In a statement, Hardwick said: 'I was heartbroken to read Chloe's post. Our three-year relationship was not perfect - we were ultimately not a good match and argued - even shouted at each other - but I loved her, and did my best to uplift and support her as a partner and companion in any way and at no time did I sexually assault her.

'When we were living together, I found out that Chloe cheated on me, and I ended the relationship.'

Hardwick is now married to model Lydia Hearst. They are pictured together at a premiere in LA in April, 2018. He denied the allegations

'I'm devastated to read that she is now accusing me of conduct that did not occur. I was blindsided by her post and always wanted the best for her. As a husband, a son, and future father, I do not condone any kind of mistreatment of women.'

This week Dykstra tweeted that she still stands by 'every single word' of her essay.

'I made sure it was unembellished, factual, and that I had evidence to back it up in order to protect my self in case of ACTUAL litigation (not a network investigation, where I'm not protected', she wrote.

After Dykstra's blog post went viral, multiple Talking Dead staffers told The Wrap that Hardwick was known for outbursts and loud confrontations that were similar to those his ex had described.

And a former employee who worked for Hardwick at Nerdist claimed he made it hard for individuals to find work in the future if he felt they had betrayed him, just as Dykstra claimed he derailed her career following their break-up.

Hardwick's name has since been restored on the Nerdist website, which he co-founded.

He has also been reinstated as host of NBC's prime time game show The Wall and appeared as a guest judge on America's Got Talent last week.

Walking Dead NYCC 2018 Panel Announced, Chris Hardwick to Moderate

ADVERTISING

The 2018 New York Comic Con (NYCC) panel for The Walking Dead has officially been announced, and AMC's Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick is set to moderate. This follows emotional and sexual abuse allegations made against Hardwick by his ex-girlfriend Chloe Dykstra, which were met with divided reactions of both critics and defenders alike.

Approaching its ninth season (which will also be lead star Andrew Lincoln's final season on the show), The Walking Dead, based on the graphic novel series of the same name created by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore, is officially making its way to NYCC 2018. However, whereas the bulk of the interest surrounding this news might be typically geared towards season 9's synopsis, new cast members, and Lincoln's final moments, the general focus is on the show's panel moderator, Hardwick, who was dropped as moderator for the Warner Bros./DC panel just this past summer at San Diego Comic-Con.

According to The Wrap, Hardwick will be returning to NYCC as panel moderator for The Walking Dead (he's served as moderator for the show's NYCC panel since 2010). The panel will be held at Madison Square Garden, and will feature cast members Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, as well as the show's executive producer/showrunner Angela Kang, executive producer/chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, and Dave Alpert, and special effects makeup supervisor/executive producer Greg Nicotero.

Following the accusations made against him, Hardwick's hosting opportunities for a number of gigs were up in the air, including NBC's game show The Wall and AMC's Talking Dead, which serves as a recap following each episode of The Walking Dead, as well as Fear the Walking Dead. However, both NBC and AMC decided to allow Hardwick to return for future seasons.

Regardless of personal opinions felt towards the controversy surrounding Hardwick, it's unmistakably a bold move to hand over hosting duties to him mere months after the allegations. Especially being so soon after the inception of the #MeToo movement, it might seem questionable, if not in bad taste, to not instead delegate those duties to someone else - even if only temporarily. That said, fan reaction and ratings will be the ultimate validation as to whether Hardwick is someone the general public wholly supports as host, or in general, for that matter.
