This is true. They waited until exit the United States to shoot it, which is a good thing. You do not want to shoot something like this down over the states. For this instance, the military did a good thing.
Why have all the public debate about it? Why not just take it down quickly, quietly and make it look like a civilian accident or rescue operation.
Cause this trillion dollar military that is here to protect us didn't even know about it until they saw a civilian phone video like everyone else.
Can’t even fault you for thinking this. We have installed so many checks and balances on engagement protocols that whoever worked the OPS desk when it first showed up probably did the right thing and it lingered in staffing until the civilian population showed up. By then, not matter what NORTHCOM/NORAD said, the military was gonna look stupid anyway.
You can bet that they waited till it was on the east coast to temper the situation a little.... can you imagine the added uproar if they would've shot it down over land, even in Montana? What would the debris even hit? A buffalo.... a ground hog.... a wolf?

WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States on Saturday downed a suspected Chinese spy balloon off the Carolina coast after it traversed sensitive military sites across North America and became the latest flashpoint in tensions between Washington and Beijing.
An operation was underway in U.S. territorial waters to recover debris from the balloon, which had been flying at about 60,000 feet and estimated to be about the size of three school buses.
Before the downing, President Joe Biden had said earlier Saturday, "We're going to take care of it," when asked by reporters about the balloon. The Federal Aviation Administration and Coast Guard worked to clear the airspace and water below.
Television footage showed a small explosion, followed by the balloon descending toward the water.
