BEIJING (AFP) – Millions of people face drinking water shortages in southwestern China because of a once-a-century drought that has dried up rivers and threatens vast farmlands, state media reported Wednesday.
The drought has gripped huge areas of Guizhou, Yunnan, and Sichuan provinces, the Guangxi region, and the mega-city of Chongqing for months, with rainfall 60 percent below normal since September, the Global Times said.
Guizhou province has been particularly hard-hit, with 86 out of its 88 cities within the drought zone and more than 17 million people short of drinking water, the report said.
Millions of people also were said to be short of water in other provinces, according to various reports.
The Global Times said some rivers had dried up in parts of Guizhou and that local villagers in some areas were lining up to obtain emergency water supplies distributed by the government.
China is prone to extreme weather, and severe droughts are a regular occurrence throughout the country. However, the current water shortages reported in the southwest have been particularly acute.
Meteorological officials in Yunnan have said the drought was the worst in 100 years in some areas, the Global Times said.
The government announced last week that it had initiated hundreds of cloud-seeding operations in the region in recent months, using rockets fired into the sky or chemicals dropped from aircraft in a bid to induce rainfall.
However, Xinhua news agency last week quoted officials saying the efforts had so far been largely unsuccessful due to a lack of moisture in the skies.
Media reports also have said millions of livestock and huge farming areas were short of water.
Meteorologists have predicted the situation could worsen in coming months as hot and dry weather was expected to continue and water demand rises as farmers turn soon to their spring planting.

China would happily start a war for water and natural resources. They have the largest Army in the world and nearly double our troop count (China 2.2M Troops vs. USA 1.4M Troop)

Be afraid.

no china will not happily start a war with another us- even in our weakened state.

the next major war...or world war...if there ever is another one....will be the last one. the nukes will fly. this whole shit will look like book of eli.

we'd beat china simply on technology alone. in a war with china you wouldn't see this timid type warfare we fight in afganistan and iraq. you'd see the full display of american military might.

we hold waaayyy back in the middle east because we don't want to seem like a bully (even though we are). but if we fought a real war with china, we'd eradicate them with superior weaponry and battle plans.

china has a whole lot of men but their weaponary is NOTHING compared to our shit.

read up on it....

:hmm: It's only a matter of time before the Chinese start bootlegging water.

Wow! Man, I thoughts cats on BGOL were much better informed. I'm disappointed in many of you and your responses.

(1) China has nuclear weapons! They've been producing their own since the the mid-1960's. On top of that, when Russia was the biggest nuclear arms producer in the world throughout the 70's and 80's - guess who was their biggest customer? China.

(2) China has satellites spy satellites (and god knows what else), its own independent space program, and advanced guidance and targeting systems just like us. That's what makes a dumb weapon a smart weapon (missile, bomb, artillery shell, plane, whatever) - it's all about the guidance systems not the necessarily the power of the weapon.

(3) Where do you think all that ex-Military Russian talent and engineering has gone. China flies SU-30's and 27's. Russian tanks as well as the next gen battle tank from Korea which is more advanced than ours.

(4) Food wise, guess what guys - MUCH OF THE PRODUCE YOU BUY, IF IT ISN'T FRESH, IT'S PROBABLY GROWN IN CHINA. Go to your frozen food section and take a look at the back of the package. You may just be surprised to find that the food is grown in China.
Same goes for petrochemicals, seed, fertilizers etc. used to grow and treat the soil. It's mostly coming out of China.

(5) You're dealing with a race of people who can happily live on a bowl of rice or rice noodles with a side portion turtle, pigeon, cat, dog, rat, or pig anus with some goddamn durian for dessert. They're conditioned to eat like a survivor.

Nothing economic sanctions can't fix.

Bottom line, without the U.S., China's not eating and vice versa.

They don't hear you, they still think this is the 50's.

amount of troops dont really matter in this day and age. Iam almost 100% sure we have weapons that make the A-Bomb look small with out using our Nukes. almost everybody knows if any nukes are drawn, its like an automatic draw where both countries will be killed.

These cats forgetting that th US has the most powerful navy and has bases all over the world read to blow them the fuck away. China would have one hell of a time trying to reach US soil

please china cant even make toys or toothpaste properly without it having poison in it....their guns will prolly blow off in their hands trying to shoot...

.

I hear what you're saying but moving, training and maintaining an army of that size isn't going to be easy against a powder puff foe let alone the #1 spender when it comes to military spending.

Not to mention that the military owns the air & seas.

I never under estimate the people that run this country, they're cruel and heartless so no telling what they would do if an all out war broke out with a country like China.

They said the same thing about Japan. :hmm:

Do you know what China has in space? Good - neither do we exactly, but we do know they have some kind of space defense/offense system floating up there.

It's the reason why were trying out satellite destroying missiles the other year shortly after China has launched some new payload satellites.

We destroyed one of our older spy satellites and made the demonstration public. The cover story - "was malfunctioning and contained toxins"

A fucking satellite contained toxins so it needed to be destroyed in space. Really guys? Really? That's the best you could come up with. :hmm::hmm::hmm:

Taliban is doing a pretty good job of fucking with us. :dunno:
Vietnamese did a pretty good job of fucking with us :dunno:
Cubans did a pretty good job of fucking with us :dunno:

And none of them had 1/5th the resources or funding China has.

That's the problem, the US cannot maintain that kind of spending especially since we are printing worthless paper to cover our debts. The US has thousands of Bases all over the planet in over 120 countries with a supply chain that is second to none. The question is how much longer will this country be able to pay this bill? I heard they are spending over a million dollars per soldier.

and you saw what happened to Japan right? They aren't even allowed to have a army now. Yeah and whatever China has in space we do also plus more. Whatever they have in space isn't gonna take out the whole us and we have anti-missiles to take out what they want to fire at us. Chian would have a better being defensive on their own soil but they would never be able to reach us soil

Why do you americans equate china's military might to bootleg goods as if they are related. The reason why most chinese flood your country with bootleg goods is because theres a demand for them. Saying chinese army will lose based on bootlegged goods is like saying the US army will lose a war because of the attitude of the average american on the street. If you truely think the chinese army is nothing compared to the US army I suggest you read the Jane defence weekly to see chinese military innovations. The chinese army is the only army that has ever made the US army retreat in shame , so why you think they are a walk over is ridiculous. What technology do you think you have that they don't?

Where do you think all the AK-47's and AR-15 black rifles are made?

The toys, dog food, baby formula and toothpaste are made poisonous because some private supplier was trying to cheat, cut corners and make some more profit.

But do you know what the penalty for the CEO's was for fucking up? EXECUTION! That's right, the government trials them, and if convicted - lights out forever.

I'd love to see the same thing happen to some of the banking and insurance CEOs who've played financial fuckery with all of us.

I wasn't around for Vietnam or Cubans but when I look at the numbers I don't see how people say we lost Vietnam.

We killed so many of their people and we lost very few in comparison to theirs.

I don't buy into the Taliban winning or even coming close to beating us.

They kill 3 people in a raid on a village and we kill 300, people just don't like to hear that we had another American killed over something that we really don't know why we're fighting.

I suppose it all depends on what people determine a victory in a military conflict.

As long as we control the flow of oil & how it is bought/sold we really don't have to cover our debts.
