Charlie Strong Fired after 31-9 loss to TCU

Just days after Texas athletic director Mike Perrin said coach Charlie Strong’s programwould need evaluation but not immediate wholesale changes, Sports Illustrated is reporting that Strong will be out as the Longhorns’ coach at the end of the season.

I told our players, ‘We have eight games left, you go play and let me worry about rest,'” Strong said, per Horns Digest.

It seems ridiculous if Texas has indeed decided to part ways with Strong, waiting until the end of the season, especially with at least eight games remaining. Anything could happen in those eight games. Texas hasn’t had a winning season since going 8-5 in 2013. The Longhorns could sweep the rest of the season or it could be mediocre. Either way, it’s now out there that Strong is reportedly a lame-duck coach, which will no doubt have an effect on the way the Longhorns play.

Since last season, Texas fans have been clamoring for the university to make a run at Houston coach Tom Herman, who has lost just one game during his two seasons with the program. The Cougars are currently ranked No. 6 in the country.

But Texas won’t be Herman’s only suitor. Both Baylor and LSU are currently looking for head coaches and Auburn also could open up, making this an unprecedented year where the bulk of the job openings are with top-tier programs.

If Texas is going to part ways with Strong — now or later — it will owe him $10 million. That’s a hefty price to pay and Texas fans better hope its school has a credible backup plan in place.

Sad for this brother, he actually believed them when they said they wanted an "ethical" program most importantly. The whole time I was in Austin Tx during the mack brown era, it was blatantly obvious it was SMU 2.0.

Texas coach Charlie Strong releases ninth player

Sep 24, 2014

AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior offensive tackle Kennedy Estelle was dismissed byTexas for violating team rules Tuesday, becoming the ninth player kicked off the team by coach Charlie Strong this season.

Strong said Tuesday something "popped up" in the last 24 hours that forced him to dismiss Estelle, one day after telling reporters the former starter would likely return to practice this week.

"Anytime a player is dismissed from this program, it hurts me," Strong said. "We're here to help young men. We're not here to run young men off. That is not our job. We're here to help them. It just bothers you, because when you've been given opportunities, you want to make sure you have every resource available for them to be successful."

Estelle started at left tackle in Texas' season-opening win against North Texas but was suspended for at least three games on Sept. 3 along with fellow starting tackle Desmond Harrison for an undisclosed rules violation.

The 6-foot-7, 290-pound junior started nine games and played in 16 during his career. He took over the right tackle spot last season when Josh Cochran was lost to injury. He was also suspended for the Alamo Bowl last season after being ruled academically ineligible.

Strong said Monday that Estelle, Harrison and receiver/running back Daje Johnson remained suspended for Texas' game at Kansas on Saturday. Johnson has already returned to practice, and Harrison could this week.

Both suspended players have done everything asked of them in recent weeks, Strong said, but "they are on a short leash at this point." Two weeks ago, Strong had hinted that Estelle and Harrison were down to their last strike.

The first-year head coach met with reporters after practice Tuesday to explain his rationale for dismissing another player. He defended his long-term goal of helping players build a foundation for their future and chuckled when asked if he's too hard on his team.

"I don't know why they would think that. I'm not hard at all," Strong said. "Those guys have more fun around me than they will ever have around any coach. That's the atmosphere I provide for them. I give them a lot of chances to get it right. I want to see them be successful."

Estelle is the ninth player dismissed by Strong since March, joining former starters Kendall Sanders and Joe Bergeron and backups Leroy Scott, Chet Moss, Montrel Meander, Jalen Overstreet, Chevoski Collins and Deoundrei Davis.

"We will continue to develop young men," Strong said. "We will continue to ask them to follow our core values, which all of them have been brought up on. They understand what the core values are. When you are asked to do something, then you're part of a team. When you don't (follow rules), you affect the whole team and you affect the program."

They must be trying to go after the guy from Houston or possibly Miles.

You're going to fire a coach that is in the process of rebuilding that had a good recruiting class with players (Jefferson) starting as true freshmeno_O

I hope Texas remains a fucking bottom dweller if they do this.

Yeah

But if you come in wanting a team full of ethical choir boys you better win and quickly

Cuz you letting talent off the team and probably not recruiting certain players

So that's the catch you have to win and unfortunately he hasn't done enough winning

He beats OU he stays tho

He thinks it's one way

I knew he would get 3 years max when that one old alumni dude said he's just good enough to be a cordinator and not a coach

Tyrone willingham'd
Tyrone ran a prestigious program into the dirt, that dude went 0-12 an made U-Dub a doormat. Very next season Sark won 5 games... Fuck Tyrone, that dude was a terrible coach that deserved to get fired. That dudes full name is never to be mentioned again in life!!! Nigga is just "Tyrone" now.

It's fuck the Longhorns all day with me, but this is some foul shit. The whole Big 12 needs to be revamped. Strong is a great coach.

Charlie Strong has been killing it in recruiting at a BLUE BLOOD program and doesn't have the results to show for it.
This has nothing to do with the Black man being railroaded.
He's just not getting it done.
His defense is last in the Big 12, and he's a defensive guru.
At the elite level of CFB, those CACs want immediate results.
Dude hasn't cracked .500 since he's been there!
Mind you he's getting 4 and 5 star recruits every year.
Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Jim Harbaugh, Kevin Sumlin etc all came out the gate swinging.
Strong is just in over his head.

He was never going to get a quality shot at Texas of all places UNLESS he had a Harbaugh like 180. Texas ain't been shut since Colt McCoy and nem got their cookies taken by Bama in that title game. Every year after that they've slipped. Strong probably wasn't the right choice down there, and we all know why. I don't think he all of a sudden forgot how to coach, or win. I think the pressure to win at Texas is so great,(for what reason I have no idea, cause before Mack Brown there was a long time where they never won shit) that makes people do unnatural/premature things to silence the critics. It's so odd that "Texas was back" 2 weeks ago and now Charlie is out... No, he's not getting fired just because he's black... But that fact ain't helping either...

He is being railroaded, he hasn't completed his 3rd year.

They wasn't fucking with him to begin with. I don't know if i could keep quiet with all the booster talking shit about me. I'd probably called them out and proceed to setting a bounty during games. Would've needed wins weekly to stay as coach.

In 2.5 seasons, Strong has already let go 7 out of his original 9 assistant coaches.
His defensive coordinator just got demoted.
That's unprecedented.
At some point you have to look at the head coach.
I've watched every Texas game since Strong took over.
His teams are just bad and I can't sugar coat it.
Again, his defense is LAST in the entire conference and they've given up 99 points in the last two games.

Yep, nothing to do with him being black
if that was the case they elude fired him last year

It's because of the success Houston, Baylor, Texas A&M and TCU were and have had

They're like the fifth best team in the state...THE state school. Understandable IMO

They don't give you more than three or four years anymore

And that's exactly why no one want that job. All that pressure to win right away. Not just show progress, but all that instate comp and the frankly to allot of those young dudes that play ain't shit special about Texas. Other state schools outside of Cali don't have all the in state comp. Florida has 3, Cali has 4, Texas??? You just rattled them off, and Texas Tech also plays big boy ball although since Leech left they've sucked.

Right...its his fault...he coming in trying to play ol chalie the goodern and show his provram wont tolerate what every winning college program ever has...

Black coaches always be on that bullshit when it comes to talented athletes...let tem play...win games and pull them to the side and handle it one on one

I think it's because black coaches see their players as blackmen and want them to do well in life regardless of their 40 times and not chattel required to keep their job, and lifestyle...

Yep bottom line is winning is priority over all that other bullshit

That or maybe they want to show whitey they can get the young niggas in line and be good ol boys :dunno:

Not always the case and I'm not saying it is here but I'm just saying

These players should speak up and threaten not to play if their coach doesn't stay.

Not true, any coach coming in would have cleaned house at Texas. I seen plenty of white coaches do the same thing, smh The team is still 1-2 years off. They finally just found a QB.

Ok can we stop talking about Texas like the program is world beater that just came off of a dynasty. Mack Brown was there for years and didn't do shit

Damn they just don't give black coaches the time anymore
Too bad for my man Charlie Strong :smh:
But at least he'll get 10 mill tho

It's Texas, and this is his 3rd year lol. They fired Mack Brown after a 9 win and an 8 win season... doesn't matter who you are, if you're not winning you're not going to be there long.

His team isn't showing progress though. He's supposed to be a defensive coach and his defense is atrocious. They can't stop anyone and their only chance is to outscore you. If they play any team with a defense they're going to lose by default. They're averaging 49 points a game given up on defense....49 points.

But defense is always slower to come along than offense. That's why Texas Tech never had a D. You can get anyone to run a system on offense and it look good. But you need beef on D, and strike out allot with players that were supposed to be good. I'm not saying he's perfect. But they've been looking for reasons to fire him since he stepped foot on the 40 acres. He was golden after week 1, now he's out??? Man fuck Texas. They're on some Notre Dame shit thinking its still about them and those old trophies and "tradition." Ninjas are about to see what irrelevance looks like real soon.
