Report: Chargers to name Turner coach
February 19, 2007

BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - Norv Turner was not the choice to succeed Bill Parcells in Dallas. But it appears he is the choice to replace Marty Schottenheimer.

ESPN.com is reporting that the San Diego Chargers have reached an agreement in principle with Turner, who interviewed for their coaching job last week.

Since firing Schottenheimer last Monday, the Chargers interviewed six candidates - Turner, defensive coordinators Ron Rivera, Rex Ryan, Gary Gibbs, Mike Zimmer and linebackers coach Mike Singletary.

Turner was the only one with offensive expertise and he would inherit a team that ranked first in the NFL in scoring with 492 points (30.8 per game). MVP LaDainian Tomlinson set a single-season record with 31 touchdowns and won the rushing title with 1,815 yards for San Diego, which finished 14-2 but lost in the divisional playoffs to New England.

Turner was the San Francisco 49ers' offensive coordinator this past season and served as a tutor for quarterback Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft. He will likely do the same in San Diego with Philip Rivers, who was selected to the Pro Bowl this past season after passing for 3,388 yards and 22 touchdowns with nine interceptions.

Turner was a finalist for the Cowboys' job after Parcells retired, but owner Jerry Jones decided to hire former Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Turner was the offensive coordinator under coach Jimmy Johnson when the Cowboys won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1992-93.

The departure of Phillips led to the firing of Schottenheimer, who wanted to hire his younger brother Kurt Schottenheimer to replace Phillips.

The Chargers had already lost offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, who left to become coach of the Miami Dolphins in January.

Turner did not have much success in his last coaching job with an AFC West team, compiling a 9-23 record in two seasons with the Oakland Raiders before being fired in January 2006. Included in that record was a 1-11 mark against division opponents.

Turner previously coached the Washington Redskins from 1994-2000, taking the team to the playoffs in 1999. He compiled a record of 51-62-1 with Washington before getting fired.

ESPN.com is also reporting that the Chargers will meet with longtime defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell this week. He most recently worked as a coordinator with Minnesota in 2004 and 2

This is insane. Has the SB taught these fools anything? Maurice Carthon was unavailable? What the fuck has this man done to warrant getting another coaching job?

Thank god. For a minute I thought I was gonna have to worry about the Chargers next year. Why you think the Cowboys didn't want him? Ya'll takin' our leftovers lol.

DUDE HAS MORE COACHIN LIVES THAN ANY OTHER COACH IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL....

they just will not give up on this BUM........!!!!!!!

The whole San Diego front office should be banned(pun intended)for that dumb ass move. They should be banned forever
and not allowed to return to any San Diego games.
This is the most dumb hiring selection I've seen in years...
Norv Tuner!!???!!!!? :smh: :smh: :smh: :smh:
Oh well better San Diego than Dallas. They fire a coach
that was 14-2 and replaced him with a coach with a

WTF??? had he been black, they would have said, "why hire a guy with a losing track record, it simply doesn't make sense. he's lost every where he's been."

Real Talk

You have AJ Smith to thank, talk shit if you may, Dallas fired a great coach at least we have a couple super bowls to show for it(Jimmy Johnson).

They just wanted a guy to be a damn puppet, I guess they got their wish. We are going to start calling them the Dolts again lol.

man...

this move is str8 stupid...

the man is a offensive guru...he should hand the OC duties not be in charge of the entire squad!

I don't think that was it, because I believe that his demands in power are the only reason he wasn't named the Dallas coach(thank God). He asked Jerry for a little more "say" in some stuff, and I doubt Jerry liked that. I think the reason he was hired is because he was the only guy they brought in who had head coaching experience(terrible experience, but still experience  ) Either way its a bad move and if he were black his days as a head coach would have long been over. :hmm:

norv was demanding and jerry doesn't like that demanding stuff. how can you demand when you have a suck track record?????? lol

thats the exact same thing i was thinking at the gym when i saw this shit on espn. whose dick does he keep sucking to keep getting head coaching jobs :smh:

Fuck. Norv is a shitty head coach but a very good offensive coordinator. We (Niner Faithful) aren't too happy with teams trying to rape our coaching staff. We haven't even been to the playoffs yet under Nolan but they actin like we won the Superbowl. But Nolan's an excellent coach, he put the fear of God in to his players and he'll recoup. We'll make it to the Superbowl before Turner, that's a given.

White coaches get more chances to screw up than black coaches. If Romeo Crennel screws up in Cleveland (and the 11-21 record over the past 2 years says he will), he won't get another chance at an NFL job. Period. Even though the team he took over (my Browns) were hapless and terrible and anybody short of God couldn't save them.

Norv got lucky and fell into a job where he has a great team (and for now a pretty decnt GM talent-scouting wise). He gives them continuity on offense and HOPEFULLY he will be coach offensive coordinator. I never understood why an NFL assistant is hired because he did a great job coordinating his teams offense or defense, and then when he gets hired, he hires a coordinator who specializes in what he specialized in which got him the job.
