Central Heating & Air Unit $$$$$$$$$$ & more in 2020

Apparently it was a service I paid for at my old address so when I made the appointment they said the system tuneup was on them they owed me. I knew nothing about it nor did I remember anything from the old house but I didn’t put up any argument when the person told me it was going to be free
HVAC techs can be some of the slimiest individuals to deal with because 90% of the time when they’re called they’re REALLY needed.

Don’t like what I have to say, well you can continue to freeze to death or burn to death.

They know they have leverage because they know you’re over a barrel and can slip in all kinds of surprise fees and surprise charges.

I remember when I bought my very first home, a top floor condo, the heat pump died about 18 months after I closed on the house.

It was the end of August and temperatures were consistently in the high 80s low 90s with 70% humidity.

I got two replacement quotes from two different companies, and actually went with the company that came in a little higher only because they would give me the first service free and discounted the service contract.

$3900 was the quote.

Imagine how breathtaking I was when after completion they handed me an invoice for almost $4750 after tax!

All kinds of crap that was not articulated by them was in the final invoice. Refrigerant capture fees, disposal fees, initial refrigerant charge, line set, pump pad, initial system calibration fee.

I looked at the tech and said what is this. I’m not paying this this is not what I agreed to nor was informed of when I received the quote.

He said he doesn’t write up the invoices I have to call the office. I called the office customer service rep-we went back-and-forth for a bit, and I left saying I’m not paying this I’ll pay what we agreed to and hung up.

The tech that was there knew I was hot. He got a call about two minutes after I hung up. It was brief but the entire time he kept diverting his eyes for me and looking down like he didn’t want to do whatever it was he was being instructed to do.

I directly addressed him and said what were you just told. He sighed and said his boss told him to remove the capacitor in the heat pump and the board. Basically disable the system until I pay the total invoice.

I told him, do you want to try that? You look back at me and said, I don’t get paid enough to put my body in danger.

Yeah, whomever said 2.5 ton, do not invite them back.

2200 sq ft depending on layout (small 2 floor, Federal) needs a 3 ton at a minimum in the DMV.

If you have 3 floor Wardman row home or Wardman flat townhouse, you’re def going to need a 4 ton. I would even say a split system where the 3 ton runs the first two floors and a aux 1.5 ton dedicated to the top floor on a separate loop and thermostat.
Thanks. Two floor Wardman.

2 floor Wardman?

I’ve never heard of a two floor Wardman. The Federals and SE post war brick block homes are usually two floors. But Wardmans are usually three floors or more if the European flat style Wardman.

Edit: Sorry, for the purposes of heating and cooling I count the basement too. You probably met two floors above grade. I misunderstood

Yep. Two floor Wardman flat. No basement, but a crawl space.
I just found out this house is a Wardman because the city designated my block historic. I'm in the Shaw area.

Anyone know the current pricing per pound for R410 refrigerant? I got a quote for new refrigerant but I noticed they listed freon although I verified my carrier unit uses Puron refrigerant. I wanna make sure the quote I received was a mistake or if they were really trying to get over on me.

I got quoted $720 for 8lbs of R410a that's not covered by my warranty service and an additional $550 for a safety switch cuz North Carolina State code now requires all homeowners to have a high-level safety switch on their evaporator coils as of 01/01/2018. Does it sound like they're trying to rip me off?

So havac guys how much should a new system cost where I should feel I got a good deal. Average size two story town home a little less than 3000 square feet

Mine went out gotta have it it’s the middle of winter that mofo set me back $6700.00 for 1600 sq ft house & installers said that was a deal :bullshit: anyway In 2020 government made it mandatory to go to a more environmentally friendly Freon so any leak or repair to any units that require Freon you will have to get a new unit after 2020 now you up on thang so start save no now $$$
I’m bout to do one now. What they use r410a

Cost will depend on the type of system you want. Are you looking for ducted,non-ducted, a mix of both? Heat pump, furnace? Have the contractor do a heatload calculation, so that you will have a properly sized unit for your home.
