Supergirl Finally Turns James Into Jimmy Olsen... Then Writes Him Out

"In Plain Sight," the latest episode of Supergirl season 5, saw James Olsen once again become Jimmy Olsen, just as the character was written out of the series. Olsen's departure saw "Superman's Pal" coming full-circle, however, finding a heroic cause to which he could dedicate himself as a vigilante and a journalist.

It has been known that the character of James Olsen would be leaving Supergirl since July 2019, when actor Mehcad Brooks announced his exit would happen at some point in season 5. Brooks reportedly wanted more time to pursue other projects, including writing a book and producing his own television series, though he is apparently amicable to returning to Supergirl in the future for guest appearances. This places Brooks in the same position as Jeremy Jordan, who left Supergirl after three seasons playing tech genius Winn Schott, in order to focus on theatrical acting.

"In Plain Sight" set-up James' departure by having him and his sister, Kelly, return to Calvintown; the small town they moved to as children, following the death of their father. James had fond memories of the town, having gotten his first job in journalism taking photos for the Calvintown Gazette. It quickly became apparent, however, that Calvintown had fallen on hard times, with the town now being run by a triumvirate of crooked cops, paid-off judges and sleazy executives. The town had become home to a for-profit prison, and it was in the best interest of everyone to look the other way as people were sentenced to long sentences for petty crimes, keeping the prison full and the money flowing into the city.

James knew he had to do something after meeting a homeless teen named Simon Kirby, who was forced onto the street after his mother was sentenced for 10 years for shoplifting. Yet it wasn't enough for James to hire a good defense attorney to tackle her case and offer his home up to Simon and his friends. Calvintown needed a hero to fight for it and James Olsen was already looking for a new direction in life, having quit his job at CatCo Worldwide Media in protest of the new management's disdain for honest journalism over click-bait.

Near the end of the episode, James told his friends and family about his decision to leave National City for Calvintown. He announced that he had already bought the Calvintown Gazette and set himself up as publisher, with the intention of using the power of the press to take on the corrupt political machine running Calvintown. And if that proved to be insufficient, his superheroic alter-ego the Guardian would be ready to act as the Shield of Justice as well.

The final scene of Supergirl season 5, episode 4, showed James in his new office, offering Simon a job and showing him the first camera he'd ever owned; a gift from his late father. James gave the camera to Simon, prompting the young man to say "Thanks, Chief." James laughed, no doubt thinking of his old editor, Perry White, and replied "Don't call me Chief. It's Jimmy."

Again...

Lena being the big bad is fine

But the REASON why she is evil is completely lazy slightly offensive claptrap

Side note I finally watched last season..

It was amazing... not a Masterpiece, but it was the best season of the Arrowverse shows.

This season has also started really good..

Even though I'm not a fan of this Lena turn..

I mean dude..

She apologized and she explained why she hid it...

Let it the fuck go!!!

The illogical Lena turn completely undermines the entire damn season.

And your right... character for character beat for beat Supergirl messed around and became the best show.

Jonn is still the rock of this show, Phil Lamar was a genius addition, like the steady use of aliens, the return if Hope, pacing is good, healthy kata supergirl balance, like the new suit with glasses trick, Leviathan from the comics, etc...

Still don't understand dreamer at all.

But Jimmy leaving, "evil" Lena? I don't know.

Thise are some big missteps to fix.

I downloaded the CW app..

Im slowly catching up on the shows..I need to see the second half for Legends of Tomorrow..

Yeah this evil Lena shit ain’t working for me..

I’m lowkey hoping that this is some Lex Luther hocus pocus that on her when he showed the video tape.

Because other then that I just don’t get this heel turn...

I mean Kara was fucking crying trying to explain why didn’t tell her... and it seem like Lena was original pissed cause she knew that Kara was supergirl and didn’t tell her...

But when Kara told Lena on her own... One would have thought that that would have been it.

I just don’t get this turn...

But everything else about this Season has been nice.

Also Batwoman has been a surprise.

Hey quick question, raise your hand if you forgot that the DEO was supposed to be a secret government organization on Supergirl?

It’s been a while since we’ve spent any significant amount of time with a character who isn’t clued in to all the black ops missions and secret intel, but EW has your exclusive sneak peek at this week’s episode of Supergirl that serves as a stark reminder that while we may be in the know, the rest of the Arrowverse world is decidedly not. That probably shouldn’t blow our minds as much as it is, but here we are!

In “Confidence Women,” Andrea Rojas (Julie Gonzalo) approaches Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) on a dark and stormy night to ask for a favor that ends up devolving into an intense showdown with a chilling end. What brings these two women toe-to-toe? None other than “secret” government organization DEO.

A distraught Andrea reveals that she needs to break into the DEO, and while Lena tries to pretend like she’s never heard of it before, the pretenses are soon dropped as the secrets start coming out. But how does Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) factor into Andrea’s desperate — and highly illegal — plans? And will Lena agree to help? Check out our exclusive sneak peek above now to find out.

Melissa Benoist reveals she's a survivor of domestic violence

Melissa Benoist revealed that she is a survivor of domestic violence in a series of candid, vulnerable Instagram posts Wednesday.

In a lengthy video on IGTV titled “Life Isn’t Always What It Seems,” the Supergirl actress spoke out for the first time about her experience with domestic abuse, which she said occurred over several months with a man she was in a relationship with.

Benoist didn’t name the alleged perpetrator, saying only that he was younger than her. According to the star, the abuse started out as emotional manipulation in the form of jealousy over who she was talking to or working with. The man would snoop through her phone and ask her to change her clothes before they went out to avoid people looking at her.

About five months into the relationship, Benoist says, things escalated to physical violence. In the video, she describes several occasions on which she was “pinned down and slapped repeatedly, punched so hard I felt the wind go out of me, dragged by my hair across pavement, head-butted, pinched until my skin broke, slammed against the wall so hard the drywall broke, choked.” Benoist says she eventually fought back. “I changed and I’m not proud of how I changed,” she said.

“What I went through caused a tectonic shift in my outlook on life,” she explained. “It taught me what love is and isn’t. The strength I’m capable of. The violence that I endured and, yes, even tolerated. The lies I told, the protection I gave my abuser.”

She concluded: “These facets all paint the dark and sinister portrait of that time of my life, but recusing those habits and breaking that cycle was the most rewarding and empowering choice I’ve ever made for myself. I will be healing from this for the rest of my life, and that’s okay.”

In a statement on her Instagram, she thanked anyone who watched the video and said that she was encouraged to share her story because she wanted to raise awareness. “The long and winding road of healing and reconciliation has brought me to this moment where I feel strong enough to talk about my experience openly, honestly and without shame,” she wrote. “By sharing my story, hopefully I can empower others to seek help and extricate themselves from abusive relationships. Everyone deserves to be loved void of violence, fear and physical harm.”

Benoist ended her note with a plea for other survivors to get help. “If you are in crisis and need assistance to find a safe way out, call the domestic violence hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE,” she wrote. Benoist also shared a link to futureswithoutviolence.org, a non-profit organization which helps raise awareness about domestic violence and how to stop the cycle of abuse.

They need crisis to rewrite this shit cause it’s not working....

They do all this shit to make Lena out to be better then her brother and then you turn her bad...

Also that shit with The FBI arrested Eve and not Lena makes no gawd damn sense since Lena fucking Stole the device from Supergirl and told her what she was doing..

So are you telling me that ... with all that.. somehow the FBIs believes it was Eve because she had a gun on Lena.. that makes no sense.

Let's not forget, they were right there when Lena gave Eve the gun..You mean to tell me they didn't see that bullshit...

I'm disappointed they didn't get rid of that bullshit storyline. Other than that the episode was good.

I like, how Batwoman and Supergirl are effected by Crisis..

Agree... with all this.

This Lena shit is driving me crazy... it makes even less sense now that Lex is back.

It's crazy, how every show was effected except for Black Lightning...I don't get it.

Show runners fucked up cause Black Lightning's story just work in this new world without some changes..... They could have probably kept the same things if the current season wasn't focused on an issue that has already been beaten to death on Supergirl and Flash and Arrow. A.R.A. just doesn't make sense now..

Also... . this is the part that really got me and it is where I had to turn the shit off...

Jefferson comes back... tells Gambi that the Universes merged and I sat at a table with Superheroes and he tells Gambi to just forget about that and moves on....

Your Freaking town is occupied and noone knows about it.... You have a Freaking connection to a team of Superheroes including the most powerful human on earth. And you say... Forget about it

It would be really nice if they're building up to that and hiding it from all of us viewers.

If it wasn’t for this damn Lena storyline... Supergirl would easily be the second best arrowverse show on now that Arrow is gone.

The number one show is Legends.

Jeremy Jordan is wrapping up his three-episode return arc on Supergirl with this Sunday’s 100th episode, but he’s already looking forward to his next trip back.
After leaving The CW’s superhero drama back in season 3 to join the Legion of Super-Heroes in the future, Jordan’s Winn reappeared in the two-part “Back From the Future” story line this season to reconnect and reunite with his super friends and defeat his evil doppelgänger. And while Winn went back to the future by the end of last Sunday’s episode, he’ll still show up in this Sunday’s 100th episode, “It’s a Super Life,” although not as a continuation of the story from the last two episodes — when Mister Mxyzptlk returns with a new face (now played by Thomas Lennon), Supergirl hosts its own version of It’s a Wonderful Life. The clip show of sorts follows Kara (Melissa Benoist) as she gets to troubleshoot all the different points in time where she had the opportunity to tell Lena (Katie McGrath) her secret and see all the alternate outcomes to figure out if she made the right call keeping her double identity from her former BFF. Some of these timelines include Winn as well as other familiar faces from previous seasons that will excite Supergirl fans.
But Jordan isn’t done guest-starring on Supergirl just yet — he’s excited for another chance to return to The CW series in the future. “It’s just the fact that Winn has always been part of the DNA of the show and when he returns for these couple episodes it really just felt natural and normal,” he tells EW. “The second I stepped on the set it was like I had never left and we just had a blast. I would be more than happy to come back and guest star again in the future. I don’t think it will happen this season unfortunately, I think they’re almost done filming, but hopefully next season maybe we can find something and continue the journey.”

Even when Jordan made the decision to leave Supergirl after starring as a series regular for three seasons, he always knew he’d back. It was just a question of when. “When I left the show, we had mutually agreed that I would come back as soon as possible for a number of episodes,” he says. “It was supposed to happen in season 4 but unfortunately scheduling and story lines dictated that it wasn’t going to happen. So we planned way ahead for season 5 and made it work then. It was always in the books, always in the cards that I was going to come back at least for a few episodes.”
And since they knew they wanted him back for the 100th episode, it ended up working out perfectly scheduling his two-episode arc back-to-back with the milestone hour.
“They knew they wanted to bring back a lot of people, and then this idea of the Toyman and Winn coming back from the future happened after that so instead of it being a true three-episode arc, it was like a two-episode arc with a little bonus: the 100th episode appearance tacked on the end,” Jordan says. “It was really convenient for me because I was already in Vancouver and I could just do the three in a row. It’s hard to schedule these things because I have a lot of concerts and I have Broadway and off-Broadway gigs. So if we can bunch it all together, it’s so much more beneficial.”

When Jordan stepped back on set after his time away, he immediately noticed how much of a toll the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover had taken on everyone. “Everybody was still recovering from the massive crossover that happened,” he says with a laugh. “But at that point it was a couple episodes behind us and everyone was free to have a blast. It’s always fun to come in and hang with your old friends. It was great to see Chris [Wood] again.”
KATIE YU/THE CW
Cagey about spoilers, Jordan teases that his favorite scene from the 100th episode is one that was full of nostalgia. “There’s a lovely scene between Melissa and I where we have one of our old school heart-to-hearts and talk, that’s always just really lovely to get to film,” he says. “And then getting to do some scenes with Chris and Mister Mxyzptlk was really fun. We had a blast and were laughing the whole time. There are some big moments that happen that I can’t really talk about that people will be really happy with. It’s like a love letter to our fans for always supporting us and being really positive throughout the years. We get to revisit some of these great moments we’ve had over the course of the series and make some fun new memories. What’s great about the 100th episode is it really feels like the end of a chapter and we can move forward from here.”
And while fans have seen Jordan playing two different versions of Winn so far this season — the now-superhero Winn who grew up in the future as well as the evil Toyman doppelgänger Winn from an alternate Earth — the actor reveals his 100th episode appearance is yet another Winn.
“The Winn that I’m playing in the 100th episode is a weird hybrid of old Winn mixed with if the old Winn had stuck around and become a version of a new Winn that we see,” he says. “It was a little bit different. I’m in the Legion suit so it’s not exactly old Winn. It’s getting glimpses here and there of what could have been. Unfortunately we don’t have all the time in the world to get to really explore all these different eventualities but in the little time we had, we tried to play with it and have fun. I still think that the new Winn we saw in the first two episodes is very similar to our old Winn, just with a few upgrades.”
Those upgrades now include a new Legion call sign: Toyman. Winn decided to adopt his father’s old villain moniker and turn it into something positive. “It was actually Jesse Rath who pitched Winn eventually taking up the Toyman call sign which I thought was super smart and really fun full circle thing,” Jordan says. “Every time Winn has an episode having to do with his past, he always comes out on top and having learned some things but I don’t think he ever fully left it behind him, and this is the final step in taking that mantle. I was just really excited to show everybody Winn’s journey as this full circle, how he’s come around to own his past and reclaim it. And having an actual superhero name is pretty awesome. I’m not mad about it, even a little bit.”
And Toyman is definitely a more exciting call sign than Computer Lad. “Yeah, but that was really fun to play too,” Jordan says with a laugh. “‘Hey, it’s cool, I’ve always been the computer lad. It’s fun!’ and then at the end when he’s like, ‘Are you kidding me? I hated it! It’s a terrible name!’ It was a great insight into our old Winn — it proves he’s still the same guy.”
Aside from reuniting with all his former costars, the thing Jordan missed the most about being on Supergirl is… “Paychecks! Just kidding,” he says with another laugh. “Just getting to reunite with Winn. I’ve never done a show for as long as I did Supergirl and I’ve never gotten to live with a character for that long. I’ve done plays and movies and I’ve done TV shows before but none that lasted this long. He’s like an old friend and he’s a part of me. He’s comfortable and it’s comforting to step into his shoes.”
Supergirl airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on The CW.

I was saying this in the BL thread, what if they reveal all this in the season finale..like say,the Flash comes to Freeland due to one of the villains on his show being pursued there, and says to Jefferson and Gambi that"there's a problem i'd like for you to help me with.." then it says "To be continued next season on The Flash"..

The Heck... She is with Mon-el in real life..

What if JJ Abrams casts this guy as Superman in the proposed soft-rebooting..
