Cavaliers Make Deadline Deals, Hughes Traded

CLEVELAND (AP) -- LeBron James finally got some help to win an NBA title.

In an 11-player trade involving Cleveland, Chicago and Seattle, the Cavaliers acquired center Ben Wallace from the Bulls and forward Wally Szczerbiak from the SuperSonics, two players to possibly get James and the Cavs through the Eastern Conference and back to the finals.

Cleveland general manager Danny Ferry, unable to finalize major deals in the past, pulled off a colossal one as the clock ticked down in the final hours before Thursday's 3 p.m. deadline.

The Cavaliers sent guard Larry Hughes, forwards Drew Gooden and Cedric Simmons, and guard Shannon Brown to Chicago for Wallace, one of the game's top inside enforcers, and forward Joe Smith.

Cleveland acquired the sharpshooting Szczerbiak and guard Delonte West from Seattle for forwards Ira Newble and Donyell Marshall.

The Cavaliers will also get Chicago's second-round pick in 2009. The SuperSonics will receive guard Adrian Griffin from the Bulls.

Plagued by injuries this season, the Cavaliers are nine games behind Detroit in the Central Division and are fourth overall behind Boston, the Pistons and Orlando in the conference standings.

James, who is having an MVP-caliber season, had hoped Ferry could pull the trigger on a deal as the deadline neared. But Cleveland's superstar probably couldn't have imagined such an overhaul.

Ferry traded 60 percent of the starting lineup Cavs coach Mike Brown sent out on the floor for Wednesday night's game in Indiana.

In the 33-year-old Wallace, the Cavaliers are getting a defensive intimidator. But Big Ben will give them little or nothing on offense. He was a disappointment for the underachieving Bulls, who enter Friday's game 171/2 games out of first in the Central.

Chicago signed Wallace to a four-year, $60 million contract in 2006. He has two years remaining on that deal worth roughly $30 million. He's averaging 5.1 points and 8.8 rebounds -- his worst season statistically since 1999-00.

"It was pretty good," Wallace said of his time in Chicago. "It is what it is. It's one of those things that you come in and you play hard and try to give what you can give and not worry about the things you can't control."

Much like Wallace, Hughes didn't deliver as the Cavs had hoped. They signed him to a five-year, $60 million free agent deal in 2005, but he struggled with injuries and his jump shot. Recently, though, Hughes had found his touch, which could help the Bulls climb back in the playoff picture.

Gooden, too, can boost Chicago's inside game. The 26-year-old is averaging 11.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per season.

It's unusual for two teams in the same division to swap key players and the Cavaliers and Bulls haven't played yet this season. They'll meet for the first of four games on March 1 in Cleveland.

Szczerbiak, who was part of the draft day trade that sent Ray Allen to Boston for the No. 5 pick -- Jeff Green -- and West, added scoring punch in a reserve role for the rebuilding SuperSonics.

He averaged 13.1 points, second behind rookie sensation Kevin Durant, and consistently showed he was fully recovered from offseason ankle surgery. In his final game with Seattle on Tuesday, Szczerbiak was the catalyst for a second-half rally, scoring 24 points, including the go-ahead basket with 31 seconds remaining in a victory over Memphis.

Szczerbiak should get plenty of open looks in Cleveland. With more and more defenses double- and triple-teaming James, the club needs perimeter players capable of knocking down outside shots consistently -- something Hughes couldn't do.

West never found a spot in Seattle's rotation. Nagging foot injuries shuffled him farther down the bench, and when coach P.J. Carlesimo finally settled on a rotation, West was often the odd man out.

West played in just 35 games, starting only five, and averaged 6.8 points in almost 21 minutes. He played 30 or more minutes just four times all season, after starting 118 games the previous two seasons in Boston.

Like the trade for the Cavs, but I'm wondering if their people think that this will get them over the hump this year. They've basically just traded three-fifths of their starting lineup. Putting all those new parts together into a working unit is going to take some time

What Seattle was doing, I have no idea. I'm assuming they are clearing house for the rookies

I listened to Danny Ferry's interview on ESPN this morning, and he said that he got a good defensive minded big man to take some pressure off of Big Z in Wallace and two shooters for LeBron to kick out two when he drives to the basket. Other than Wally, the others are still good defenders.

Let's be honest, Wallace didn't fit in Chicago. He is better playing alongside a big man that has a mid-range jumper and gives him room to operate. Besides Joe Smith, the Bulls didn't have that. I'll expect his rebounding and blocked shots to go up. But this is a defensive minded team which Wallace likes.

They will also have a good bench. The question is, do you start Wally or Boobie? (I know Boobie is hurt, but who do you start when he comes back?)

Seattle is dumping salary because the team may end up selling the team.

There's no doubt the trade will benefit Cleveland in the future.
I'm just wondering if he thinks it will happen THIS season, because
I can't see it happening right away

Unless Lebron runs the entire offense from now until everyone gets acclimated to it

btw, this is the second time they are rebuilding an entire squad around him

I think they have to do it for the first few games. They can actually get away with it with the players they brought in. Offensively LeBron will just drive and kick out to Wally or Delonte, and if they miss Ben cleans up. Other than Wally, they are all good man defenders. They will be right next year. I liked Delonte's game. He is exactly what they need. And all Wally has to do is consistently give them the 15 points a game. He's more than capable of that.

Wally is a poor man's Allen Houston (with just as many injuries.)

I'm wondering how Chicago is going to rebuild? Does bringing Larry Hughes in mean that they are giving up on Ben Gordon?

I just think it is going to take awhile for them to click. The only person that should have stayed in my opinion is Shannon Brown. Mike Brown never gave him a chance. He would let old washed up Eric Snow have more time than Brown did. I think Brown is going to shine and we will regret trading him. Shit they should have shipped Damon Jones but I am sure no one would have took him:smh:

between the two, you keep Snow because of his high basketball I.Q. I was never impressed with Damon and I expect him to be traded over the summer.

Don't like that trade at all because of the contracts, the age of the players, and the fact that they did not upgrade their talent.

The top guys Cleveland was trying to get, they couldn't pry away and this was option B (or maybe even C).

They still don't have the PG they coveted and they still don't have a consistent secondary scorer. Hopefully Wally can fill that role.

I like the Cavaliers' team and wish them luck but the bottom line is that after 2010, LeBron is out of there.

Interesting season of trades and in my opinion the top trades this season so far are -

1) Kevin Garnett to the Boston Celtics.

2) Kyle Korver to the Utah Jazz.

3) Whatever team finishes higher between the Spurs, Suns, and lakers. (Only ranked 3rd because I don't think either of their deals will benefit past this season)

- My money is on Phoenix.

The only person that should have stayed in my opinion is Shannon Brown.

Cleveland's main reason for drafting Shannon Brown because him and LeBron got tight at the McDonald's All American game back in 2003. The same reason they refused to deal Daniel Gibson.

I'm surprised Shannon didn't fit in as Cleveland's style of offense resembles the putrid style of offense played in the [little]-10.

3rd (they didn't rebuild but changed the make up of the team) if you count his high school senior year when they shipped guys out to ensure they had the best chance at getting the worst record in the league.

LeBron is easily the best player in the NBA but I think Ferry just made a deal for the hell of it. If he was patient, more would have opened up next year.

But this should have been expected as we all know Duke alum are known to panic and cave under pressure

LeBron = Youngest player to score 10,000 points in the NBA.

I haven't checked BGOL yet, but I wonder if the STANs made post after post to celebrate that

As far as the trade, haven't seen either team play but what team is looking better so far?

I think LeBron rolled his ankle last night and might miss time.

Anyone think that the "upgrade" in talent will benefit the team if he is out? They are 0-6 without him barely scoring 90 points in most games.

I see Larry Hughes is someone that certainly didnt mind the trade. 29 for him last night in a W on the road.

they still wont make the playoffs with detroit and boston in the same conference

Not make the playoffs

As much as the mid-level teams in the East are struggling to get W's, the Cavaliers could make the playoffs if they played .300 ball for the rest of the season.

They looked good, but they still lack that solid number 2 guy to go and give them 10-15 ppg. (Wally had that potential 5 years ago, but I don't know about that now.) It was easier for the others to acclimate into Cleveland because they are defensive minded players and that's what the Cavs are. That being said, if I was Cassell, I would seriously consider giving the Cavs a look before signing to Boston.

Larry is playing for playing time. The guards are stacked in Chicago, and it looks like Gordon is the odd man out. I think the coaches are big on him, and he will supplant Nocioni as the starter.

I had the BUMP this thread because the Cleveland Cavaliers are currently down to the Miami Heat, at HOME, entering the 4th quarter.

I didn't like the trade at first, but after seeing the team play more, I'm convinced that the trade pretty much ruined the team. Cleveland is, by far, playing the worst basketball of any of the current play off teams.

As a fan of LeBron James and what he brings to the game, it's sad to see how he'll be wasting years playing with his current cast and if Ferry doesn't make a deal in the off-season, this team is going to get even worse.

Read my earlier post. If they don't get a number two guy in there scoring for him he will want out. Gibson, Wally and Sasha aren't getting the job done.

I do like what Ben (when healthy) and Delonte bring to the team.

From a free agent standpoint, they should be looking for a solid number two guy in the offseason.

From espn.com:

Cleveland will face Washington in the first round for the third straight year, whether they finish fourth or fifth. The teams have been on a collision course for weeks, and their rivalry has been fueled by some recent trash talk. In a blog last week, Gilbert Arenas said, "I think everybody wants Cleveland in that first round." Earlier, Wizards F DeShawn Stevenson called James "overrated." James was asked if the comment added to the rivalry. "Absolutely," he said. "That's the last thing I'm going to say about that."

Cleveland playing Washington in the 1st round is a blessing for them. That's a team they know how to beat already

Oh sorry. I meant to say that's a team LEBRON knows how to beat

On the real, they are finally starting to gel a little. Delonte is getting settled in at the point and Boobie is finally healthy. I think they will miss Hughes against Arenas, but it may not make a big difference because he's been out for months and may not be back at full strength yet.

Does anyone know if Butler is coming back?? Can't see how they're just going to insert two stars who've been out so long with so little time back together and win a 7 game series

the washington wizards' problems are similar to those of the new jersey nets. they lack defensive interior presence.

backcourt players? got 'em: gil arenas, deshaun stevenson, antonio daniels.

the 3? check: caron butler, andray blatche, antawn jamison (yes, i know, but no matter what anybody says, he plays like a talented rebounding 3, not a 4)

but at 4 and 5? brendan haywood.

Arenas ends media boycott, says he's ready to go vs. Cavs

Associated Press

Updated: April 18, 2008, 9:42 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- Gilbert Arenas is finally speaking again. He sounds like the same ol' Agent Zero.

"I'm an assassin. I get buckets," the Washington Wizards guard said after Friday's practice. "I know I haven't played in a long time, but the shot is still there, so when I come off that bench, there is going to be some trouble."

Arenas, usually a master of self-promotion, began a media boycott when he returned from a 66-game absence on April 2. Except for a couple of entries in his blog -- one of which added trash-talking fuel to Washington's first-round playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers -- he steered cleared of the cameras and scribes until the regular season was over.

"I just didn't want to hear 'How's your knee?' 'How does it feel to be back?' 'Are you going to still opt out?' Same old, same old," Arenas said. "Let's worry about the playoffs and wait until we get to the playoffs and then I'll be back at it."

As if on cue, a reporter then asked Arenas if he going to opt out of his contract this summer, as expected.

Arenas chuckled and answered rather shyly: "I don't know."

Since returning from knee surgery, Arenas has been used as a sixth man. He has been limited by doctors to 25 minutes or so per game and sat out the final two regular-season games as a precaution. Coach Eddie Jordan is hoping Arenas will be able to play more in the postseason.

As for the series against the Cavaliers, which starts Saturday in Cleveland, Arenas helped stoke the back-and-forth between the teams in his blog. Among his comments: "I think everybody wants Cleveland in that first round" and "We don't think they can beat us in the playoffs three years straight."

"The funny part is I don't talk trash on the court, just around the court, before I step into those lines," Arenas said. "That was the same team that was talking trash when I shot the free throw [in Game 6 of the 2006 playoffs]. Now it's revenge time. I don't know what the hoopla is about. When they were talking trash, it was no biggie, but now when we talk trash it's a big old problem. We get crucified for it."

The Cavaliers have played barely better than .500 since acquiring Ben Wallace, Delonte West, Joe Smith and Wally Szczerbiak in February, and that hasn't escaped Arenas' notice.

"Ever since they made that trade, they really haven't found how to play with each other and that's what we are banking on," Arenas said. "It's not the same team that we played two years ago."
