Roach: Pacquiao vs Martinez, Only at 147-Pounds

By Rick Reeno

BoxingScene.com was advised by Freddie Roach, trainer of WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, that a fight with Sergio Martinez is only possible at the welterweight limit of 147-pounds. Martinez, the WBC middleweight champion, can squeeze down to around 154-155-pounds at most. Making 147-pounds would be impossible. Martinez has always taken the position that "the Pacquiao fight won't happen because he's too small."

"I was asked about what I thought was the most attractive fight out there, and I said [Floyd] Mayweather, and the second was Martinez if he can make 147," Roach told BoxingScene.com.

When I advised Roach that there was no possible way that Martinez could physically make 147 - he replied - "then it won't happen."

Koncz Explains Why Pacquiao Asked For Catch-Weights

By Lem Satterfield

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao has come under fire in the last few days. Most of the negative press was related to a potential third fight with Juan Manuel Marquez. The Mexican lightweight champion was requesting a catch-weight for a third meeting with Pacquiao. The Filipino fighter's team quickly rejected his request and advised Marquez that any potentional fight with Pacquiao would have to take place at the full welterweight limit of 147-pounds. The refusal didn't sit well with a number of people, because Pacquiao himself has used catch-weights in several of his biggest fights.

Michael Koncz, the adviser of Pacquiao, explains that catch-weights were used because Pacquiao is so much smaller than most of his recent opponents. With respect to Marquez, Koncz doesn't see him as being in any position to manuever the terms against Pacquiao. The days of going up in weight are over. Pacquiao flirted with a rise to 150-pounds for a November junior middleweight fight with Antonio Margarito. Although he easily dominated the action, Margarito badly hurt him with a bodyshot in the sixth round.

"No. 1, we moved up a number of different weight divisions, and that's where we utilized catch weights as we did with Margarito. We knew that Margarito was going to come in bigger, and that's where we used catch weights. That's part of negotiations," Koncz said.

"We used it against Cotto and that's not something that killed Cotto because I knew he would make the weight because I had had discussions with [Cotto's adviser] Brian. They weren't happy about it, but they were willing to do it," Koncz said. They were willing to sacrifice to make the fight, and, again, that's part of negotiations. Manny's in command, Manny's general, and he should be able to impose realistic conditions on opponents who want to benefit financially from his popularity."

"Again, the same thing with Margarito. I could have asked for 147 or even 146, and that would have made Margarito suffer traumatically. But we didn't do that. But we're not fighting at 150 any more. That is too dangerous for Manny to have that kind of weight discrepancy and that kind of a difference on fight night."

I know right. He just won at a 150 catch weight and he's talking about Martinez come down to 147 or no fight.

WTF?

I used to dislike Floyd intensely for some shit we've already talked about a million times but Manny is turning out to be worse than that dude. Floyd is either a genius or he really don't want no part of Pacman. A couple more fights of this catchweight, chosen opponent shit from Pac and niccas will be begging Floyd to come back.:lol:

Yo, I am really wondering what it will take before everyone sees this bullshit. I mean damn. Marquez is the best option and I have no doubt that Manny SHOULD be able to put on a better performance than last time, but than again Marquez SHOULD be able to do the same. Marquez is the only fighter that is a threat to Manny besides Floyd around that weight and we won't get that. Instead of keeping it real and saying Martinez is too big... they pull this shit, I guess if that say Martinez is too big they have to basically admit that Margarito shit was a bullshit fight.

They don't need to admit it, we know it. You won't see Manny fight anyone with a chance of beating him. But I agree with everything Shane said in that article. Manny's style is tailor made for him, you know I've been saying that shit for a while now. If Shane can turn back the clock even a year - that fight won't go 12, and I disagree with most cats, Manny won't ko Shane. No way in hell. They're taking this fight solely based on the fact that they believe Shane has lost speed, which he has. But stylewise this is not a good match up for Manny, they should have taken the Marquez fight. Even Freddie doesn't want this fight.

I agree on the KO part. Shane's chin is too strong. I can't see Shane winning at this point... I think if we go back to the 2003-2005 Shane, he would brake Manny in two. I think Shane has lost some small amount of speed. Really... I think he is more trigger shy, but he can still pull it together for a good straight foward brawl.

Shane would have a shot but if Roach wants to fight him, they probably think he's done.

Roach actually wanted the Marquez fight, so he says, I find it hard to believe Freddie would want Manny to face a guy who in alot of people's minds beat him twice, instead of a guy who's looked shot twice in a row. Loss of speed or not, I still say this is a bad style match up for Pac. I think he'll win but this might be a war.

Ariza Rips Marquez: He's Talking Out of His Mouth and Ass

By Rick Reeno

Alex Ariza, the strength and conditioning coach for WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, would like to see a trilogy fight with Juan Manuel Marquez. Ariza doesn't see the fight happening, at least for now, because Marquez is reportedly "overpriced himself." Pacquiao is scheduled to return on April 16 at the MGM Grand. The frontrunner opponent is "Sugar" Shane Mosley.

Ariza is a little upset with the way Marquez has handled his pursuit of Pacquiao. Following his recent win over Michael Katsidis at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Marquez came out to the post-fight press conference with a t-shirt reading "I beat Manny Pacquiao twice." When it came time to submit proposals for Pacquiao's April fight, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum has claimed in several BoxingScene interviews, that Marquez was requesting a very high number to face Pacquiao for a third time.

"Marquez needs to decide if he's going to stop talking out of his mouth and out of his ass. He comes out and says 'I beat Manny, I'll fight Manny, I'll fight Manny at 147.' But then when he talks out of his ass - he says 'I'll fight him for $5 million dollars.' Do you see what I'm saying? Man up. Take whatever they are offering you and then kill him like you say you can, like you say you can beat him, and then go and get that big payday that you want. You know that you're the king of the mountain after you beat Manny," Ariza told BoxingScene.com.

"Quit pricing yourself out of the game. Man up. Quit saying that you're going to do one thing on this side of the fence and then hop on the other side of the fence behind closed doors, and behind the cell phone, and behind your promoter, and say 'I want $5 million dollars,' when you know that you are never going to see that money."

These guys are great hustlers, even Don King would have to give them props for the shit they are trying to pull off.

Pac beats up on bums for a few years at 20 mill or so a pop and only lame niggas will be happy.

Its funny as more and more niggas wake.... the roles will be reversed, Pac will be the villain and Floyd will be the hero like Merce said.

(Cock)Roach was running from this fight the minute Shane took out Marg like he did...they wanted no part of him then...now after the Floyd fight and his performance against Mora, they think they can get to him...

I also don't think this is a good matchup for Pac anyway because he will have to get into the inside to get to Shane, and if Pac tastes one of his power shots up close, then he'll be in big trouble.

...and this BETTER not be at a catchweight either :hmm:

For real, with these cats talking about only fighting Marquez and Martinez at 147, if Pac's a welter then he's a welter, he don't need a catchweight.
