Can a Lightsaber Cut Through Superman?

Can a gadget defeat a superhero? Here's a question our sister site io9 posed: can a lightsaber cut through Superman? We put both our nerdy gadget knowledge and our nerdy superhero knowledge to the test and came up with reasons why it could and reasons why it couldn't.

Yes
• If the lightsaber crystal was green, like green kryptonite, or if they actually used kryptonite as the crystal, then Superman would melt like a hot knife through even hotter dog droppings.

• Superman's been injured by lasers before (see most aliens he's fought), so an extremely focused laser like a lightsaber could possibly hurt him if applied directly to the skin for a long enough time.

• If he were under the effects of kryptonite, when even bullets can hurt him, then a lightsaber could definitely chop off parts of his body.

No
• What type of radiation does the lightsaber emit? It's light, and Superman gets power from the sun, so the lightsaber could be a refreshing lamp.

• It would just burn off his clothes, like in Superman 2, but it wouldn't hurt him.

• He uses lasers (his own heat vision) to shave himself, so the best the lightsaber could
do would to singe his chest hair, or give him a nice shave down there.

• Jedis can't actually cut through "everything" with the sword. Example: the big huge door in Episode I. They had to jam in their lightsabers and "melt" a doorway inside the door. The sword was fast to go into the door because they applied all the force to the tip, but was slow cutting because the Jedis are only so strong. Picture you cutting through a watermelon. In the same principle, a lightsaber technically might be able to cut through Superman, but there's nobody strong enough to force it through. Unless you somehow get the Hulk to use a lightsaber. But the Hulk doesn't exist.

Verdict: Superman wins! [Thanks to Achal for his Superman knowledge.]

what i don't get is Obi Wan gets desintegrated on Ep. IV
but Qui-Gon and Maul and others on the Prequels don't?

Vader and Luke cut each others hands on Empire And Return Of the Jedi for fucks sake

ok I can explain what happend to Obi wan , he just let himself die before vaders saber hit him , the same way Yoda died in the empirestrikes back.

But I need to know how Vader was able to block Han Solo's laser blast with his hand but gets his hand cut off by luke in the return of the jedi

Good to see someone else paid attention in science class. Jedi walking around swinging supernovas.

Uhhh fellas...."exqueez me" the temperature of the the sun is not a supernova....

A supernova or a star system destroying event is far hotter that the temperature of the sun......and a lot more to do with mass and matter than heat.

If I'm not mistaken the space shuttle receives heat up to ten times hot as the sun on re-entry into our atmosphere.

or check these here:

The company plans to build a $425 million plasma arc gasification facility
here in St. Lucie County, the first of its kind in the nation and the largest
in the world. The facility should be up in about two years.

It will generate heat hotter than the sun's surface and will gasify and melt
3,000 tons of garbage a day by creating an arc between two electrodes and
using high pressure air to form plasma. It's a process similar to how lightning
is formed in nature.

there are several man made devices and natural instances that are hotter than the sun......

It depends on what you see as the cause of Supes "invulnerability". Is it due to his molecular structure being more dense or does his tissue regenerate instantaneous, similar to Wolverine's healing factor to the Nth level, but at the molecular level. If the former, Supes gets cut the fuck up, badly. If the latter, the lightsaber will have the appearance of just passing through him.

Then again, all of this is very bad science. :D

Well, I know this is all make believe and theorycraft, but we need to know two things before we can acturately answer this question.

How much heat can Superman withstand?

and

How hot are lightsabers?

I've seen Superman dive into the depths of the Earth into lava(1st movie). I've also seen him fly into the earths atmosphere(4th movie). I don't know how hot re-entry is but I'm sure someone could dig it up and it's nothing to laugh at.

We've seen a lightsaber slowly begin to melt away blast doors(episode 1). But how thick are blast doors and what are they made of?

Need more information before we can solve this riddle.

I could go on and on but as not to make a spectacle of you bgol scientists...there are several man made devices and natural instances that are hotter than the sun......

no, please do so.

don't just say folks are wrong when an opportunity for enlightenment is at hand.

that would be lazy.

I had too....sorry man u know I know you be droppin' knowledge but in this instance i think science fiction got away from science fact....

:lol::lol:....shit i was actually debating it in my head then that lightbulb went off and I realized that there are several things that are hooter than the sun.

Pay me no mind

well, anything man made that is "hotter than the sun" isn't really hotter than the sun.

a welding torch could be considered hotter than the sun, only because some parts of the sun are hotter than others. i guess if only the coldest parts of the sun are considered, then you're right.

the rest, well, pales in comparison.

you also have to consider that intense man made heat and lightning only lasts for milliseconds, plus have little mass.

a lightsaber would have to create sustained heat THAT DAMN hot for minutes at a time...which would probably kill everything around it.

shit, i've been to a bonfire that would fuck you up.

Elementary ass simple simon muthafuckas:smh:

A bolt of lightning is hotter than the surface of the sun. So is a nuclear explosion. Why don't either of these events destroy a star system? Because of the masses involved. I know we're talking science fiction here, but in the scope of the Star Wars universe a light saber being hotter than the sun is very possible. A more viable argument would have been how they were capable of generating enough energy to keep it powered without plugging them into starship engines or something. Geez.

Superman would own all jedi Super speed + super strentgth + Flight + reversing the earth's spin + bad hair cut = One Badass Motherfucker that eats jedi like tyson would eat lennox lewis's kids

Ya'll some nerds

 co sign, gtfoh wit this gay ass make belive shit, niggaz bringin up science facts for some make belive ass movies. george lucas could have made a lightsaber a big stick of dodo if he wanted 2 and ya ninjas would be aurguing wheater a light saber dodo smell worst then dog dodo, get a life u fuckin losers:lol:

Obi Wan had years to study how to cheat death - it was a study that was developed by Sith such as Freedon Nadd (ex-jedi) and Marka Ragnos and Exar Kun (ex-jedi). Qui Gon Jin discovered it and told Yoda to teach it Obi Wan. Him and countless other Jedi returned to the force when they died but their consciousness was still active in the real world. The imbalance in the Force was through all these dark side and light side Force still lingering around because enough cats knew the secret to cheat death and could revive their dead friends and allies' consciousness after physical death. The last two that needed to pass over were Obi Wan and Yoda.

Jedi had enhanced speed and strength through the Force so when the first 3 or 4 cuts from someone using Form V lightsaber fighting style did no damage the Jedi would fall back and go to plan B. Jedi have powers like Affect Mind, Morichro and Malacia when their backs are against the wall. Similar powers have worked against Superman in the past when used by villians in the Marvel universe so a Jedi Master on his game could "hold" Superman long enough to apply the lightsaber to his skin and cut through or bounce and bring back ten lightsabers and a few cats to do that battle meditation.

already quantified and explained.

The crystal is the heart of the blade.
The heart is the crystal of the Jedi.
The Jedi is the crystal of the Force.
The Force is the blade of the heart.

All are intertwined:
The crystal, The blade, The Jedi.

You are one.

The creation of a lightsaber is an important part of a Jedi's training. Upon constructing his blade, the Jedi makes a connection to the blade, making it a part of himself; an extension of his body and mind.. It is said after losing a lightsaber, many Masters have gone days feeling a sadness and disconnection, until they construct a new blade.

The construction itself is a long process. It must be made in the following order:

Hilt
Activation plate
Shielding
Superconductor
Crystals
High energy aperture
Discharged energy cell

"To construct a Lightsaber from its component parts takes a minimum of four weeks and the Jedi must have the knowledge of how to construct a Lightsaber. This may be knowledge imparted by a Master or the Jedi can simply allow the Force to guide their hand.

The true schematics and details on how a lightsaber works cannot be explained, but there are things that are known.

"Each saber beam has a unique frequency that determines the "feel" of the blade, how it handles when cutting something or contacting a force field or another saber blade. The cut of the crystal is what gives the saber blade its specific frequency, the frequency of each saber blade can be calculated from its blade color and pitch it generates. Sabers can use between one and three jewels to give their beam a specific frequency.

Sabers with a single jewel have a fixed amplitude, which determines the blade length. Other sabers with multiple jewels can alter their amplitude, and thus the blade length by rotating or varying the separation between the jewels. The best sabers use natural jewels, but, evidently, the Jedi can forge synthetic jewels with a small furnace and a few basic elements.

A superconductor transfers the power from the flux aperture to the power cell. Almost no energy is lost in the process - the beam doesn't seem to radiate noticeable heat, though it does fluoresce and hum. The saber looses power only when it cuts through something - but not when contacting another saber blade. The Jedi must use his strength and skill to force his blade against another saber blade; no lightsaber can cut another's beam.

A strip of shielding is inserted to protect the controls from the slightest leakage from the superconductor resides nearby.

The beam emits from a positively charged continuous energy lens at the center of the handle. The beam then arcs circumferentially back to a negatively charged high energy flux aperture, usually set in a disk that also serves as a handguard without allowing it to eat its way back through the Jedi's hands. The power amplitude determines the point at which the beam arcs back to the disk, setting the blade length. The tight, arcing beam forms a blade of amazing strength.

Controls at the hilt of the saber adjust the power cell capacity and allow periodic recharging. The nature of the power cell is not as important as how it is integrated with the rest of the components. Though exact duration figures are not known, it is clear that Jedi can use their sabers for years at a time before recharging becomes necessary."
