Cameo is an American soul-influenced funk group that formed in the early 1970s. Cameo was initially a 13-member group known as the New York City Players; this name was later changed to Cameo to avoid a lawsuit from Ohio Players, another group from that era. The height of Cameo's career was in the 1980s, particularly Word Up! with its hits, "Word Up!" and "Candy". The writers of "Word Up", Cameo's biggest hit, were Larry Ernest Blackmon (founder and front man) and Thomas Michael Jenkins (member of the group)

The Gap Band was an American R&B and funkband which rose to fame during the 1970s and 1980s. With the nucleus consisting of brothers Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert Wilson, the band first formed as the Greenwood, Archer and Pine Street Band in 1967, in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The group shortened its name to The Gap Band in 1973.

Both great bands, but only Cameo had an Electric slide anthem AND a top 40 hit. Plus Rigor Mortis might be one of the funkiest songs every made.

Like em both but the Gap Band for me. Here is the first song I heard from them

they both were the shit back in the day but cameo had some top shelf ballad shit for getting some pussy back in my teenage days! :shades:

Cameo put on a better show and was funky as hell. GAP Band was damn good too. This is a tie for me. Seen them both in recent years. GAP Band plays way more hits. Cameo doesn't play much of their older stuff. Yeah.......a tie for me.

Gap Band...First concert i ever seen as my 6yo bday present. Chicks throwing the draws onstage lol

(If the show is still running) I'm thinking about going to see them when I'm in Las Vegas next month. The problem is I'm traveling with 8 people and the final choice is between them and Boyz II Men. I've seen Boyz II Men before, they put on a GREAT show in a much bigger/nicer Strip venue (Mirage) and their tickets start at only $39.95. I just don't think Cameo is worth paying twice as much to see in a cabaret room at the Westgate off strip (the old Las Vegas Hilton).

Cameo brings a fun and in-your-face show with a classic funk sound to the Westgate Cabaret. Comparable to Parliament Funkadelic early on, Cameo was a trendsetter through the 1970's and 1980's and even influenced early R&B and hip-hop acts. Their biggest hit, "Word Up," made it to number six on the pop chart in 1986, giving them their biggest bite of the mainstream.
