Mortal Kombat 11's Ending Is A True Franchise-Changer

Mortal Kombat 11 deals with the Keeper of Time, Kronika, attempting to rewrite history following the events of Mortal Kombat X, where Raiden upset the balance of the light and dark by using Shinnok's amulet. Using the combined temporal energy of the Jinsei (Earthrealm's life-force) and Shang Tsung's Well of Souls, she finally begins the process at her Isle outside of reality.

However, after surmising her location, the heroic version of Raiden from the past leads his new alliance to one last stand at Kronika's Keep. With Kitana Kahn (the new Emperor of Outworld), Kung Lao's Shaolin Monks, a redeemed Jax, and the combined armies belonging to Kotal Kahn, Baraka and Sheeva, all working together, the younger Liu Kang accepts his destiny as "the Chosen One" who was always meant to save all the realms.

THE RISE OF THE FIRE GOD

It's revealed that Kronika has been tampering with Raiden and Liu Kang's fates across many timelines, always pitting them against each other so the realms would remain steeped in endless war. This is the sadistic balance she needs to keep the Sands of Time flowing, but with evil Raiden tipping the scales, she has to course-correct history by rewriting it from scratch.

With her Revenant, Liu Kang, seeking revenge against young Raiden for older Raiden causing his death, Kronika steals the younger Liu Kang and allows his future self to absorb his soul, thus creating her ultimate champion, a Shaolin killer empowered like never before. However, when the super-Revenant arrives on Raiden's approaching ship, Raiden decides to break their vicious cycle of predestined war by bonding his soul to the two other Liu Kang souls.

This results in a being that's basically a new god of Lightning and Thunder, but with the flames of the Shaolin, who now calls himself the Fire God. With Raiden's godhood in Liu Kang's body, at long last we get Earthrealm's true champion, and an entity imbued with the necessary power to take out Kronika, an ancestor of the Elder Gods.

A NEW ERA BEGINS

When the alliance touches down on the Isle, Kronika's Netherrealm armies swarm, outnumbering the heroes. However, the Fire God's impact is similar to that of Thor from Avengers: Infinity War, harnessing fire, thunder and lightning, turning himself into a weapon of nuclear destruction. The Fire God does most of the heavy-hitting, cleaning out Kronika's cronies before going to her chamber to engage in Mortal Kombat.

With history literally on the line, he takes out the time-goddess' inner-circle, which includes Revenant versions of Jade, Kung Lao and Kitana, as well as Kronika's daughter Cetrion. Sadly, the Fire God's too late as Kronika has erased all the realms, putting reality back at ground zero. Liu Kang goes on to defeat Kronika, but unable to reverse her actions, he finds himself taking counsel from Raiden -- no longer a Lord -- one more time after he unbinds his soul from the White Lotus warrior.

Liu Kang is now pulling double duty as both the Protector of Earthrealm and the new Keeper of Time. His duty is to return to the Dawn of Time to start history anew, but on Raiden's advice, he reaches into the depths of the past and plucks Kitana to be his partner in this new journey. As they reboot everything, literally sculpting the New Era Kronika prophesied, we get a new timeline for the Mortal Kombat franchise which Kitana hopes will be one of prosperity and hope with their loved ones finally making the right decisions for the greater good of all the realms.

It's worth noting this ending is attained once the user beats Kronika in all rounds without losing. If the player loses once but still goes on to beat Kronika, the "good" ending is more or less the same, but features Liu Kang and Raiden teaming up as the timekeepers.

Mortal Kombat 11 is developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive. It is currently available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
