Yankees tell players to be less like Cam Newton, more like Russell Wilson

Spring training involves much more than bullpen sessions, batting practice, and meaningless exhibition games. There's a lot of training that goes on behind the scenes, and not all of it is physical.

Every team conducts some kind of media training in camp because they want their players to know the right way to speak with reporters. They want them to talk to the media but not saying anything controversial, basically. It's easier said than done.

The Yankees, who have to deal with the ruthless New York media, take media training very seriously in spring training. They often bring in guest speakers and show video of what they consider the right and wrong way to act around reporters.

According to ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand, this year the Yankees showed their players video of Cam Newton's and Russell Wilson's recent Super Bowl press conferences.

During the Yankees' media training, the Super Bowl is being used to portray the right and wrong way to act. Part of a video shown to pitchers and catchers compares how Cam Newton handled his Super Bowl loss to the way Russell Wilson dealt with his defeat the previous year.
Following this year's Super Bowl loss, Newton abruptly left his postgame press conferencein the middle of a question. Wilson, meanwhile, answered every question and shouldered the blame for the loss following his team's Super Bowl defeat a year ago.

The Yankees want their players to be more like Wilson -- accountable and available -- and less like Newton, at least when dealing with the media. And hey, I don't blame them. The last thing the Yankees want is some sort of distraction because a player was grumpy with reporters.

With decades of storied history in the country's biggest media market, the New York Yankees are perhaps the most scrutinized team in American professional sports. That brings plenty of additional pressure for Yankees players to go along with lofty expectations of their play on the diamond.

But as they kick off spring training this year, it seems they've found a figure to emulate in their dealings with the press: Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

The Seattle signal-caller, known for his improvised magic on the field and his polished (some might say robotic) persona off it, reportedly earned praise from Yankees brass for the way he handled adversity.

According to ESPN's Andrew Marchand, the Yankees used Wilson as an example of how to behave following defeat, contrasting Wilson's press conference following Seattle's heartbreaking last-second loss in Super Bowl XLIX to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who stormed out of his press conference early following his team's loss in Super Bowl 50 earlier this month.

"During the Yankees' media training, the Super Bowl is being used to portray the right and wrong way to act," Marchandwrote on Sunday. "Part of a video shown to pitchers and catchers compares how Cam Newton handled his Super Bowl loss to the way Russell Wilson dealt with his defeat the previous year."

Wilson's poise following Seattle's 28-24 defeat to the New England Patriots -- which ended with a game-clinching Wilson interception on the Patriots' goal line -- was impressive, and it's no wonder the image-conscious Yankees pointed to it as an example to follow.

It also brings a Yankees-Seahawks mutual admiration society full circle, as Wilson himself has referenced former New York star Derek Jeter -- notoriously composed in his dealings with the media during a 20-year major league career -- as an idol of sorts. Wilson also writes for Jeter's "The Players' Tribune" website, where he is a senior editor.

what would have been better...showing a white player walking out in the middle of the press conference...

or a coach being an asshole etc etc etc...cuz truss me their is a lot to choose from...

they had to choose somebody to show...

just saying...:rolleyes2::rolleyes2:

go yanks...we need another chip ...fuck the rest of the bullshit...

show them muthafuckas how to hit...dam a press conference...

our hitting has failed us the last couple yr`s...

There's better examples of what NOT to do at press interviews than Cam. Poor training in lieu of trolling if cam was the only example included.

this and the no printed tickets thing is a REALLY bad way to start off the season.

Cam did this shit to himself this time. No band aids for feelings....then just sit and answer the damn questions without the hoodie on.

The comparison is bullshit, but gotta say its appropriate. Russell tap dances like fuck, and his own team knows it, BUT he handles the media better. he is as disingenuous as any player I have ever seen (seems like a salesman on camera all day, every day to me), but if that is what teams want give it to em CAM. When the ring, then show the fuck out. Gotta win first though

I would like to add they should ALSO show

1.) Peyton Manning running off the field when losing to New Orleans and not shaking drew brees hand after he threw that pick to lose the game (BITCH move),

2) show players how not to stick your nuts on a womens head in jest (HOMO shit) and when going corporate goes wrong.

and 3) Before you congratulate your team you are on national TV kissing another man-a corporate sponsor (wait so kissing a man is cool now?--its about the kids remember???)

Compare How Russell Wilson Handled Losing Super Bowl 49 with Cam Newton in Super Bowl 50

I can’t find the full video, but Wilson definitely didn’t walk out after mumbling 80 words.

No sulking, no hiding behind a hoodie, just a professional who accepted the blame and credited his opponents. I’m not drawing any sweeping conclusions here – it’s just what happened.

We all handle defeat differently – I know I didn’t take it like a professional when I didn’t make the tennis or basketball team in high school, or missed out on a job on ESPN the Magazine a little over a decade ago. I curled up in bed and cursed the world.

Live and learn.

How did Cam did it to himself, when he answered questions like he suppose to and then left a little early..Hell,he even congratulated Manning, after the game and it's still not good enough for people....but somehow Manning got a major pass for walking off the field, before the game ended...
