Report: Bulls believe Jimmy Butler has changed as person, question his leadership

Jimmy Butler and Derrick Rose have reportedly had problems with each other(though both have denied that).

Then came a report Butler is bothering more than Rose.

What is happening in Chicago?

Nick Friedell of ESPN on the Posting Up podcast with Tim Bontemps:

I don’t think that the tension between Jimmy and Derrick was ever as bad as it was made out to be. But the tension now, moving forward off the Derrick talk for a second, between Jimmy and other players in that locker room is bad.

Because you can’t just say, “I signed this new deal. I’m the leader.” That respect has to be earned over time. Nobody is questioning Jimmy’s work ethic. He’s worked his tail off. But they are questioning whether Jimmy can be the leader that this group needs with so much turmoil going on around them.

You talk to anybody within that Bulls organization, and they’ll tell you that Jimmy has changed. His personality has changed.

And it’s not to say he’s wrong in that.

But this was a kid that loved saying he was from Tomball, Texas and that he was just a role player on a really good team. And now he wants all the trappings that come with being a star in the league.

And that’s all well and good.

But again, this ties back into the leadership problem this team has. You can say all that, but you can’t just say, “Alright, I’m the leader.” You have to earn that respect over time. Maybe Jimmy will.

He’s really rubbed some people the wrong way with how he’s going about things. So, it’s something to watch for, and it’s something that I know is on the minds of the front office in that, “Can we trust this guy to go out and to be who we need him to be every night, and can he lead us the way that a championship-caliber team needs to be led?” And early on, the returns have been no.

Key words: “Early on.”

Butler admitted publicly criticizing Fred Hoiberg’s coaching style was not the best way to handle his concerns. Butler also brought controversy to himself and the team when he declared before the season, “I am a point guard” – Rose’s position.

But Butler is new to leading. He was a role player until last season – and that seemed like a great accomplishment for a late first-round pick who spent a couple years at a community college.

Now, Butler is an All-Star on a max contract. Things have changed – though maybe not enough.

Rose – who has led Chicago – is still there.Joakim Noah – who has led Chicago –is still there.

That makes it much more difficult for Butler to successfully assert himself. Not only are other players accustomed to looking to players still in the locker room, it can’t be easy for Rose and Noah to defer.

Butler hasn’t handled everything well, and that this issue could be deeper than we suspected if the personality that led him here has significantly changed. But as much as, if not more than, any individual, the Bulls’ leadership problems could just be due to circumstance.

Butler’s talent demands Chicago gives him an opportunity to grow through this stage. It’s just not easy to find 26-year-old wings who excel on both ends of the floor.

The other elements could sort themselves out soon. Noah’s contract expires this summer, and Rose might not be long for the Bulls, either.

I wouldn’t rush to declare Butler a problem in Chicago. His off-court issues would have to be far worse than we realize to counteract his on-court production.

But I would keep an eye on him and how he handles suddenly being the team’s best player – and how his teammates handle it, too.

Lmaoo a 2nd tier player thinking he's the man now cause he got a max contract

Butler stay getting his ass torched.

Butler is over-stepping.

It might be a case of tryong to do too much, like he has good intentions.

Or it might be a case of dude feeling himself a little too much.

He needs to figure this out real quick for them to have a chance this season.

leadership coaching needed

This his thing...
To me that's what he's seeking

They don't play consistent
They don't always play hard

I mean I'm not going to knock a players for wanting to be coaches up...
Wanting his coach to motivate the other players to play hard...
Realized they could do something special if they play hard...

And coaching is what you got from Thibs. Hoiberg strikes me as someone who still wants his players to be his friends like he had at Iowa State; you see how they choked in the tourney last year. GarPax's hard on for this dude will lead the team to mediocrity by next season.

Thats It what u said! They are mad cause he is turning into a alpha-bull! Cant lie he is giving them what they need, a swift kick in the ass! Go to any game and sometimes ask anybody and they will tell you hes the star of the Bulls team! Hell the announcers already say it everytime a game airs!

In the early 1990's, Monroe Banks proclaimed leadership over the entire organization but this was disputed by older high-ranking members of the gang.Monroe Banks was later killed in a drug related murder in 1992

Nah Thibbs was a disciplinarian that had control and structure. He stressed defense first and hard work. Hoiberg is a more uptempo run and gun type of coach.

Butler fits Thibbs style and he did at Marquette, come down pass the ball three times before looking for a shot and that is how Butler gets his touches. He doesn't like the fast pace because he doesn't get his touches.

And it's really Gars hardon because he is Hoibergs best friend...He even purchased Hoibergs house from him in the Chicago area ...

Paxon likes him because paxon wants a coach that will do exactly what he says so he can coach without taking the blame. That's why Pax hated Thibbs cause Thibbs was on I am the coach its my team now get out LOL

I mean injuries helped, but Jimmy was on the path to becoming a star...we saw it in(well I saw it when he matchup against Lebron) him.
I like dudes that don't back down and want to be stars, leaders when others are hurt or slacking...

Honestly. Fuck the ESPN shit, either you're a leader or you're not. Jimmy wants to be the guy, but maybe he just isn't that dude to the people in the locker room. First off, from what I've seen this season hes talking too damn much. In 30 games he's been negative in the press 4-5 times... That's an issue. Second, this is a team full of vets that really don't need to/want to get behind someone. What is Jimmy gonna tell a guy like Pau who's played with the best of this generation, played under Phil and won rings??? What has Jimmy done to have Pau fall in line??? Noah??? Taj??? Hell Capt kirk??? Him making more doesn't mean shit. Third, if he wants to lead he's going about it the wrong way. Lead by example until you have some equity built up, then speak when necessary. But from what I'm hearing he's done damn near a 180 degree flip and him getting Hollywood isn't going to fly with teammates who knew him when he was just a guy fighting to get off the bench. The Bulls issue is simple... The team isn't as good as we thought and I say that as a Bulls fan. There's no athleticism outside of Jimmy and Derrick, no one but Jimmy can defend their man, and to top it off they're not consistent with their effort. It's easy to see why they're struggling and no amount off whining and bitching is going to change it. So if I were Jimmy I'd play my ass off, button my lip, and stop being so pushy. That's all you can really do when you're on a team that isn't going to compete for a title.

/\ This is why Jimmy shouldn't be taking that shit to the media. He hasn't done shit yet. He hasn't earned the right to talk down to the vets. Sure he's become the best player on the team, but he still needs to follow the chain of command.

He could be a leader to the younger guys - Snell, Doug, Bobby, Niko. Maybe inspire them to do the same thing he did to become a better player.

But he gotta keep that shit in the locker room. When he speaks to the media about it, it's like he's acting like he's bigger than the whole team, and that's what rubbing everybody the wrong way.
