Well, actually book sales do mean something, particularly Amazon's.
You mentioned Dr. Kunjufu's popularity and people not knowing who he is, ostensibly because he was a relic of the past.
Considering that the explosion of Amazon is something that occurred fairly recently about two decades ago, it's a good measure of the popularity of each individual's literature- meaning that it was most likely purchased within that time frame.
This relative to Dr. Umar whose one book isn't even a blip on the radar compared to Dr. Kunjufu.
Dr. Kunjufu's resume is well established and he is respected and recommended by his peers.

I would offer that Dr. Umar is as much notorious in the negative sense as he is famous.
No, I don't hate the brotha at all. I think he's very intelligent and fairly well-spoken and is a great orator.
I've enjoyed listening to him, both for the times when things he said really made sense and for the comic relief.
However, I have two eyes that have seen the same shadiness and clown shit everyone else using their own two eyes has seen.
