ews & Notes, August 14, 2006 · Ed Gordon talks with William Jelani Cobb, professor of history at Atlanta's Spelman College, about a growing number of African-American men who are traveling to Brazil and seeking out prostitutes. Cobb wrote an article in the September issue of Essence magazine titled "Blame it on Rio" on this subject.

Is Sex Better Abroad? More Professional African American Men Seek Sex in Brazil, Study Shows

Jewel Woods

Cleveland, OH (BlackNews.com) - A recent study suggests that more professional African American men from the United States are going to Brazil to live the lifestyle that most men only dream about.

Jewel Woods conducted extensive interviews with professional black men who experienced the sex tourism industry in Brazil. Speaking with black men in cities nationwide, Woods found that many professional black men seek overseas what they are not getting in America and from professional black women. The majority of the men in the study were highly accomplished. Middle-range professionals were interviewed as well.

Woods is the "study behind the story" and is quoted in September's Essence magazine in "Blame It on Rio." The article investigates rumors of African American men traveling to Brazil for secret sex vacations.

"The study raises questions and concerns about the traditional belief systems of the black middle class, the black family, and the "sexual politics" between black men and women. It also raises questions about what is meant by a "good man" and brings new insight into issues of masculinity, morality and male privilege in the 21st Century," said Woods.

The author of the forthcoming study "The New 'Ugly American': Professional Black Men, Sexual Paradise & Brazil," Woods examines the implications for black men, black women and the black family. He also delves into African Americans' relationship with the so-called Third World, an important point, especially with so many professional men participating in the Brazilian sex tourism industry.

In a different twist to the sexual innuendo of, "Once you go black you will never go back," the impact of Brazilian women on the minds and imaginations of professional black men raises the issue "Once you go to Brazil, you will never come back..."

Excerpts from the study can be found at www.jewelwoods.com

Dayum...the word is out...

While I've been tempted, I've never made it down there. Too scared of the AIDS and crime. But I know dudes who've bought property in Brazil!

While I'm not down with it, I'm not above importing (and HIV testing) a Brazilian chick to the US!

i wanna try it but i dont know i saw the movie city of god and the documentary on the dvd i dont know!!!!

There is an actual city called City of God ( Cidade de Deus), but most of that movie was shot in a part of Rio called Cidade Alta (High City). I actually spent the weekend in the city where most of the movie was shot and a saw a few of the spots from scenes in the movie. I have friend that lives in that favella.

If you visit Rio, and stay in Zona Sul (copa, ipanema, leblon, lapa), you dont have to worry about the real hardcore violence and you will be ok.

City of God took place in the slums or as the narrator says "far removed from the picture perfect view of Rio." It's the ghetto which exists in every country worldwide (well most). From what I hear however, there are other parts of the country, and brazil is a big assed country (think amazon rain forest). I didn't mean the pun with big assed but you get the idea. I heard Michael Baisden blowing it up on the radio and the wives were mad their husbands went there and Cancun annually. The doctor he had on the show pointed out that it is a trend amongst middle class AA men who have the money to do things like the white boys have been doing. Also, the women, through whatever circumstance, cater to us in ways AA women don't. The doctor went on to say however that the government there isn't too keen on AA men asopposed to White men.

While it pains me to side with the guys on this one, I think they are over-exaggerating like many so-called black intellectuals do when it comes to topics relating to us.

Brazil is a great place. I love these articles...if they make dudes think twice about going down, all the better for those of us who DO love travel and seeing exotic places/people...

Been there, done that, walked the streets of Rio at night...like any other large city, keep your wits about you, mind you own, and leave the 'ugly American' act at home...

Can you exand more on your above post

I don't believe that black men are swarming over to Brazil to pay for sex. It's just stupid.

Now I'm sure some end up doing that anyway, but it's not their purpose. The whole idea is to get crazy sex from beautiful, exotic women who are WILLING.

Everyone,

Brazil is a trip that must be taken to be enjoyed, understood and belived.

Last year there was alot of forum chatter on the Essence article. For those of us who live in Rio part of the year, we can tell you that the article is based on a 4 block area in Copacabana.

For those who worry about safety, when you travel you just have to use common sense. In a poor country like Brazil leave the bling bling at home. Not needed... Brothers like eewwll and a few others can give you good advice if you ask. As far as AIDS is concerned you wont have any problems if you, again, use common sense. Don't fuck RAW. Period Not here or in Brazil.

Brazil is the same size as the U.S. 48 conterminious states. So many different flavors to enjoy.

Salvador, Natal, Fortaleza, Iguassu Falls, Ouro Preto & The Amazon just to name a few spots.

Everyone take the trip and you will see why we post in BGOL. Brazil had the most African slave dumped there. So when you visit and step off the plane you will think for about 30 seconds that you are in Harlem.

Carnaval starts February 17th this year and you can still get a ticket. Rio during Carnaval... YOU AINT NEVER SEEN NO SHIT LIKE THIS BEFORE....

Come down and find out why everyone is buying apartments there.
