Brooklyn school backed by Jay-Z said students could graduate debt-free. Now they're buried in it

The school definitely dropped the ball by saying you would graduate "debt free" but why don't people know the difference between tuition and room and board:dunno:

It's clear that some of you haven't read the article.

The headline has the same effect LIU was going for. By mentioning Jay Z you get more eyes and can leverage his NIL for their benefit.

The only affiliation Long Island University has to Jay-Z or Roc Nation appears to be monetarily.....

I bet dude thought it'd be a nice PR look, similar to what Robert Smith did, but on a lower $$$cale and segmented down to the world of music, which Jay is a global icon in.

Jay / Roc Nation gave them the $ and it was the school administrators that were on fuck shit.

You can't (morally, not legally) tell people they'll graduate "debt free" and then after they're already enrolled and signed paperwork start hitting them with fees.

But that's what happened. There were 50 "free tuition," scholarships. The fine print was that the scholarships didn't cover school / admin fees, room and board, and if there was an inevitable rise in tuition.

*So, hypothecically, if tuition in 2022 was $10k, that was covered, but not the $750 school fee, $2,000 room and board, $600 meal plan, $500 studio tech fee...etc

*all made up fees /numbers, just used as an example.

But mentioned in the audio version of the article, it was suggested that the administrators meant to say the students would "graduate without owing the schools money directly," which is true semantically. They'd owe whoever was used as a loan servicer.

And as of 2024-25 the *scholarship language has been updated to read as covering only the tuition costs, not all the ancillary fees and etc.

With all that I said earlier, it would be interesting to see if/ what Jay has to say about his / company's name being associated with this scandal.

Overall, I get what you are saying. However, most of these people likely only signed up because Jay was associated. Add on the fact that they were verbally told or high level read there wouldn't be a tuition payment. Most people especially those likely being targeted would take that at face value. They are going to believe that includes everything including room and board.

Jay may have only gave them money, but his name along with Roc Nation is what made those people trust without doing more research or reading the details. Respectfully, that's assuming they could understand what they were reading to begin with.

We all agree to terms that we've never read. When you download an app, you don’t necessarily read the terms of the app. Some people may think about the permission they are giving on their phone/pc. If Microsoft created a new app and said trust me bro, most people aren't reading anything. That is because Microsoft has earned your trust over the years. Jay allowed his name to be used so it's kind in the same name and wasn't this done in his old neighborhood. Now it would be different if Jay only gave money and no one was aware of his connection.

Even if people were to say it's still on them to read the agreement, entire laws were created around fine print and simplifying wording. You can be highly educated and still sign a bad agreement because of the way it was written. How many times have you seen someone on Facebook for example say something like "I don't give Facebook permission to use my images...." These people likely have Facebook to use there data ( way more important/profitable than your images) the day you created the account, but most people have never read the terms of agreement. Now there maybe a way to opt out of certain aspects of the agreement, but im pretty confident that method isn't it.

LIU has a total enrollment of 16k students, 11k are undergrads...... this "scholarship" was only awarded to 50 students......

So I doubt only people familiar with Jay Z / Roc Nation applied to enroll or for the scholarship.....

I don't have an issue with anything else you said and in fact I agree, the administration was playing semantics with their scholarship language.....

The point of my initial post was that a lot of comments were saying Jay was wrong fornthis like he had any control over it.

Yes he gave money and allowed his name / Roc Nation to be used, but the school is ultimately responsible for how they award and distribute/ use the funds.

Which is also why I said it'll be interesting to see if he responds and what that response will be.....

Out of 16000, I can see your point, but it's no way for us to know why anyone attended. What we do know is low end Black media was reporting it with some questioning the move. These days due in part to Beyonce Jay has a higher reach outside of just Hip-hop culture. You still have a fair point.

I still believe it was up to Jay or whom ever to vet evey aspect of the program/scholarship. He had to agree to allow his name to be used publicly and we know why. It's no different than any other deal he would attach himself to. Now if they were straight scamming that would be different.

It's not exactly the same but celebrities have been if nothing else charged by the SEC for basically advertising for crypto projects that were scams or believed to be a security. We all know these people had no technical parts of this anything else outside of being paid. So yes Jay didn't have any control over anything, but I can understand people holding him somewhat responsible. Assuming he really wasn't aware I don't believe most people will care long-term.It could be argued that Jay was a victim too.
