Brooklyn man walks free after 18 YEARS in prison and is now determined to prove 'dirty cop' beat him into confessing to killing 4-year-old girl — SEE THE VIDEO

After 18 years in hell, Sundhe Moses finally freed when Brooklyn detective's case comes undone

Moses has spent the better part of two decades in prison after being convicted of killing a 4-year-old girl in Brooklyn. But the case centered around a questionable confession taken by NYPD Detective Louis Scarcella, the man behind 50 convictions currently being examined as potentially wrongful.

Moses has spent the better part of two decades in prison after being convicted of killing a 4-year-old girl in Brooklyn.

Sundhe Moses was a free man for the first time in 18 years on Tuesday, as he walked out of an upstate prison determined to prove that a dirty detective railroaded him for the killing of a 4-year-old girl in Brooklyn.

Nearly 2 feet of snow covered the ground outside of the Bare Hill Correctional Facility near the Canadian border, but Moses had a sunny disposition as he left the lockup at 9:45 a.m.

“It was snowing, but it was like a great weight being lifted off my shoulders,” Moses told the Daily News. “I walked out and everything was new.”

Shamone Johnson was struck by a stray bullet at a playground in Brownsville in 1995. Sundhe Moses is said to have confessed to the crime.

Moses was released pursuant to the state Parole Board’s decision on Oct. 31 to grant him parole. It came after his lawyers documented serious flaws in the Brooklyn district attorney’s case and a key witness at trial admitted that cops coached him to lie.

Moses, who was convicted for the stray-bullet killing of Shamone Johnson at a playground in Brownsville in August 1995, says that tainted retired NYPD Detective Louis Scarcella beat him into confessing. Moses’ case is one of 50 trial convictions on which Scarcella worked that prosecutors have reopened after it was revealed the ex-lawman may have framed an innocent man in the murder of a Brooklyn rabbi in 1991.

“Scarcella is a real dirty cop,” Moses said, ruing the day he copped to the shooting. “He beat me until I signed that confession . . . I am angry. My life is gone.”

Moses said how glad he was to be relieved of wearing “prison-green” clothing, and noted that he couldn’t wait to sit down to a soul food dinner. He said he hopes to one day work as a counselor with at-risk youth — but first his lawyers, including powerhouse attorney Ron Kuby, must get his 1997 conviction overturned. “It’s been a real long journey. We have a little way to go. I want justice served,” Moses said.

The Brooklyn district attorney’s office began investigating the casework of Scarcella after a judge in March overturned the conviction of David Ranta, 58, who was imprisoned for 20 years for the rabbi’s murder in 1991.

“Hopefully he’ll feel some of the suffering that my family has, and other prisoners have, felt,” Moses said.

While Moses celebrated, the former guardian of Shamone Johnson was enraged. “He had something to do with her murder,” Arlene Brown said of Moses. “My baby is still dead. She is not getting back on Earth. God will take care of him .”

At that point and stage in life I would probably devote those energies into killing that cop and his entire family. Sometimes there just has to be blood shed.

Michael Scarcella, 50, a police officer assigned to the 71st Precinct, was found dead of an apparent suicide at his Flatlands home at about 11 a.m., sources said.

The exact cause of death was not immediately known.

His brother, Louis Scarcella, 62, a one-time renowned homicide investigator, has been implicated in a string of questionable convictions that involved unlawful tactics like threatening suspects and repeatedly using the same, drug-addled witness.

Five men, each of whom spent about 20 years in prison after Scarcella brought them down, have been cleared of murder since May 2013, including one this past Tuesday.

Brooklyn prosecutors identify 14 more cases handled by disgraced former NYPD Detective Louis Scarcella
EXCLUSIVE: The new discovery put the number of re-examined cases tied to retired detective Louis Scarcella at 71, district attorney Kenneth Thompson told the Daily News Editorial Board.

Brooklyn prosecutors have identified 14 additional cases handled by a now-tainted detective, expanding their unprecedented convictions review, the borough’s top lawman said Tuesday.

The new discovery put the number of re-examined cases tied to retired detective Louis Scarcella at 71, district attorney Kenneth Thompson told the Daily News Editorial Board.

They comprise the majority of over 100 cases being looked at by a Conviction Review Unit, which has already cleared seven wrongfully convicted murder defendants this year, four of whom were brought down by Scarcella.

“We wanted to double check. We did another search,” Thompson, who took office in January, said in explaining the newfound cases.

He said the queries included different spellings of the homicide investigator’s name and cross checking cases handled by his partner.

“I think it shows the level of commitment with this Conviction Review Unit,” the DA said.

The review of some 24 cases has been completed with his office standing by the conviction in the majority of them, he added.

Scarcella, a renowned detective during the 1980’s and 1990’s, had his hands in hundreds of murder prosecutions but has since been accused of repeatedly using the same drug-addled witness, threatening suspects and employing other improper tactics.

He has denied any wrongdoing.

Just wow man. I would serial kill every member of that damn family man. Shit is just unreal.

Re: Brooklyn man walks free after 18 YEARS in prison and is now determined to prove '

I agree w/this too.

There was a case in Ohio where the detective wondered aloud if the man would have had a fair trial. When people hear certain numbers they become afraid. So anything other than that number is a relief.

Teach your sons if they get arrested to exercise their right to remain silent. The only thing they should say to a cop is "talk to my lawyer" and "am I under arrest? If not you can't keep me here"

Far too many parents who believe they are instilling basic survival tools to their children, dont understand their insistence on not driving in sun towns, put on their best white voice, and other goofy shit, but is instilling the perpetuation of fear into them.

Re: Brooklyn man walks free after 18 YEARS in prison and is now determined to prove '

We actually have a non corrupt Black male DA in Brooklyn New York (Kings County) named Ken Thompson.

We now know that his white predecessor Charles Hynes was a serial lying, racist, degenerate who deliberately send innocent Black men to prison for crimes he knew they DID NOT commit.

The majority of the votes Ken Thompson received from Black people in Brooklyn came from Black women, primarily 'church ladies' ; the same truth applies to Black Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams a former Sergeant of the New York Police Department.

Ken Thompson when the time comes should be re-elected in a landslide, with a vote total unseen in Brooklyn history; but this will not happen because too many Brooklyn Black men are not only not registered to vote but are busy pursuing the G's up Hoes down lifestyle. Many don't even know that in New York State an arrest record does not preclude one from voting.

What DA Ken Thompson is doing is historic. He has identified over 100 convictions of Black men that look suspect and upon further investigation could be overturned. He has said that he will not criminalize young Black, brown, or white men for possession of small amounts of marijuana; a process that can fuck up a young persons life when it is time for college and acquiring college loans and grants. Pat attention to what's going on in Brooklyn!!

I agree he will put his own family I.to a great ordeal again and his parents are old too. Its not like they will ship him to a nearby.prison. sad to say the only thing he can do is sue the city.

Third world countries dont play with cops especially crooked.ones. I respect the good ones. The american justice.makes.it difficult to convict cops in general.im so happy this is getting publicity.
