More than a dozen people were killed in a horrific crash early Saturday when a discount bus flipped on a Bronx highway and careened into a metal traffic pole, officials said.

The top of the World Wide bus, which was returning to the city from the Mohegan Sun casino, was sheared off when it hit the sign alongside the New England Thruway just after 5:45 a.m.

Officials said at least 13 people died in the sickening impact and another 20 were hospitalized.

Investigators said the bus was traveling south on I-95 to Midtown when it crashed.

Cops were searching for a tractor-trailer believed to have made contact with the bus in the moments before the deadly crash.

It was not immediately clear what caused the bus to lose control, but it overturned on the highway near Exit 14, the ramp for the Hutchinson River Pkwy.

It appeared to skid on its side for about 250 yards and directly into the massive traffic sign – and the steel pole tore through the bus’ windows.

The vehicle did not come to a rest until the pole had ripped through almost the entire length of the bus, destroying its interior. The sturdy pole, which supports a large highway sign, is built to withstand strong winds and not give way when struck.

Scores of emergency vehicles rushed to the grisly accident scene, and firefighters clamored over the crumpled bus desperate to find survivors. Injured passengers, some of whom were critically hurt, were rushed to area hospitals, including St. Barnabas and Jacobi Medical Center.

Police sources said the bus left the Connecticut casino at 3:45 a.m. and was heading to drop off passengers in Chinatown.

"Around 6 a.m., it just got crazy, crazy," said a man waiting in the Jacobi ER who gave his name as Earl. "All the patients in there were cleared out and they began wheeling all these people in."

"It was like a movie," he said.

Officials said 31 passengers were onboard the bus at the time of the crash.

It was not immediately clear where the bus originated. The website for World Wide bus, which is based in Brooklyn, says it offers service between Manhattan – at the corner of Eighth Ave. and W. 31st St – and Cambridge and Newton, Massachusetts, two Boston suburbs.

The highway was completely shut down in the aftermath of the wreck. Firefighters were using long pieces of wood to prop up the bus so they can check the undercarriage of the mangled vehicle.

Ophadell Williams, bus driver in horrific crash, did prison time for manslaughter, forgery

The bus driver in the horrific Bronx crash had two criminal convictions: for stabbing a man to death and stealing from the Police Athletic League.

Ophadell Williams' troubling history emerged Monday as the toll from Saturday's accident rose to 15 with the death of a 70-year-old man.

Williams shouldn't even have been at the wheel - his driving privileges were suspended after he ignored tickets for speeding and driving without a license in 1995, The Associated Press reported.

Williams, of Brooklyn, is expected to speak to investigators Tuesday. His past prompted Gov. Cuomo to order the state inspector general to investigate how he "was able to obtain and retain a commercial driver's license."

NEW YORK -- A casino bus driver at the helm of a New York crash that killed 15 people last year has been found not guilty of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.

Ophadell Williams was found guilty on one count of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Williams wept and covered his face with his hands as the verdict was read. On the count which he was found guilty, the judge sentenced him to 30 days in prison, which he has served. He also was ordered to pay a fee of $500.

Williams argued throughout the trial that he had been awake and alert, and said the crash was not the result of reckless behavior or extreme exhaustion. He said a tractor-trailer cut him off, causing him to swerve and hit a guardrail. But investigators could find no indication that had occurred.

His lawyer had said he was wracked with guilt over the crash - but not guilty of manslaughter.

"It happened as a motor vehicle accident, not as some crime," said Williams' lawyer, Patrick Bruno. "He tried to avoid tragedy, and tragedy occurred."

Bronx Assistant District Attorney Gary Weil had alleged Williams was so sleep deprived from working another job during the day that it affected his reflexes the same as if he were intoxicated behind the wheel. He said Williams knew the risks, but drove anyway.

The trial lasted more than eight weeks, with Superstorm Sandy causing a delay. Juror deliberated about a week, but not consecutively.

The March 12, 2011, crash happened on Interstate 95 at daybreak as Williams was ferrying a busload of gamblers to Manhattan's Chinatown from the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Conn. The bus crashed just feet from a road sign that read: "Welcome to the Bronx."

The bus struck a guard rail, toppled over and hit a signpost that tore open the top before skittering to a stop.

The victims were mostly Chinese men and women over the age of 40 who were regulars at casinos. About half died. The others were injured. Survivors missing limbs testified in court, including Ren Xiang Yao who spoke of how he lost both arms when he raised them up instinctively when the bus crashed. He said he didn't see the crash - though he remembers when the rescue crews arrived.

"I used all the energy I had left and said, 'I'm here, I'm here, please come rescue me,' "he said. "By the time I woke up, I was already in the hospital."

Yao was hospitalized for nearly a month and had several operations.

Jurors also watched video from the scene of the accident and other wounded passengers who testified the bus was unsteady in the moments before it crashed.

Williams has been held in Rikers Island because his family cannot post $250,000 bail. He faces/faced a maximum of 7 1/2 years to 15 years in prison.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in June that the accident was probably caused by driver fatigue, and a bus company that provided too little safety oversight. It stopped short of saying Williams had fallen asleep.

Williams worked for World Wide Tours of Greater New York. Federal regulators shut down the bus operator after the accident for safety violations. Williams had not turned in any driver's logs while working for the company as required by federal safety regulations, yet World Wide took no action, federal investigators said.

But the bus company won't face any criminal charges related to the crash, Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson has said.

New York state has stepped up inspections of tour buses since the crash. Dozens of buses have been taken out of service after police found problems with logbooks, licenses or equipment. But there have been several bus accidents since.
