Brock Turner, the ex-Stanford swimming star convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman on campus, formally registered as a sex offender Tuesday in Xenia, Ohio.

Turner, now 21, served three months of a six-month sentence shortened by "good behavior" while in California's Santa Clara County Jail. The Ohio native, expelled from the prestigious university before completing his freshman year, was released Friday and returned to his parents' Bellbrook home.

On Tuesday, Turner reported to the Greene County Sheriff's Office to complete the paperwork. He will be registered as a sex offender for life and must serve three years probation.

Turner will be required to update his registration every 90 days. Neighbors will be sent postcards alerting them that a sex offender lives nearby, and officers will make random, unannounced visits to his home, Sheriff Gene Fischer told USA TODAY.

"He answered our questions and complied with the law. In and out," he said.

Turner, who claimed the victim consented, could have faced more than a decade in prison on the convictions — assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated/unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person— stemming from the attack next to a trash bin outside a fraternity party.

The relatively light sentence set off a national firestorm, and the sentencing judge faces a recall effort in California.

The assault, which took place in January 2015, was halted by graduate students who came upon the scene on bicycles. Turner fled, but was chased down and held until police arrived.

The victim's impact statement noted Turner's registration as a sex offender "doesn’t expire. Just like what he did to me doesn’t expire, doesn’t just go away after a set number of years. It stays with me, it’s part of my identity, it has forever changed the way I carry myself, the way I live the rest of my life."

The California Legislature recently sent Gov. Jerry Brown a bill that, if signed, would toughen penalties for attacks on unconscious victims.

In Ohio, protesters rallied outside the Turner home Friday, some armed. Local firefighters used hoses to blast away chalk messages from the street, sidewalk and driveway, the Dayton Daily News reported. Among the scrawlings: “Its your job to hold your son/self responsible so he/you don’t hurt my daughters.” There were no protests Tuesday, Fischer said.

Fischer said the media attention drawn by the case could shine a light on the the sex offender registry.

"This was a terrible crime," he said. "But if we can get this incident to educate people that this registry and this information is out there, then at least some good can come out of all this."

Protesters stood outside the ex-Stanford swimmer's house
Ex-Stanford swimmer Brock Turner, who spent three months in prison after he wasconvicted of sexually assaultingan unconscious woman behind a fraternity dumpster, registered as a sex offender in his home state of Ohio on Tuesday.

Turner, 21, must register as a Tier III sex offender every 90 days for the rest of his life and notify his neighbors that a convicted sex offender lives in the area, according to ABC News.

Turner left jail on Friday after serving three months of his six-month sentence. Turner was found guilty of assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated or unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person. Two witnesses on bikes caught the college student committing the crime. Turner faced up to 14 years in prison.

In June, Judge Aaron Persky handed down a sentence of six months because a longer stay might “have a severe impact on him,” he said at the time. California lawmakers called the sentencing “shockingly lenient.” Critics have demanded Persky be recalled for what they say was a too-light sentence, and the judge is now moving off criminal cases.

The crime and sentencing ignited a national debate over what advocates see as the uneven punishment of sexual assault suspects. Turner argued he was a victim of “party culture,” wherein alcohol blurs the lines of consent. But his victim, whose name has not been reported, said in court: “We were both drunk. The difference is I did not take off your pants and underwear, touch you inappropriately and run away.”

Protesters stood outside Turner’s parents’ house this weekend to object to his light sentence.

BROCK TURNER COLLEGE STILL AN OPTION

Brock Turner has a clear path to getting a college degree, but it won't be anything like Stanford.

We did some checking and there are several colleges in the Ohio area where he's living with his parents that will admit him, despite his sexual assault conviction.

Clark State Community College -- located about half an hour from his parents' home -- requires a high school diploma, and as long as he graduated from an Ohio high school, which he did, he's eligible for admission. There are no restrictions regarding crimes the applicant may have committed.

The school is certainly a bargain compared to Stanford ... it's $260.66 a unit. An academic year runs around $3,700. Of course, he won't get a B.A. since it's a 2 year school.

We also contacted Central State University, a 4 year school, and HBCU. Officials at the school hedged on whether they would accept his application, but said if they did they would post notices on campus identifying sex offenders.

Turner registered as a sex offender Tuesday, and did not list a college he might be attending.
