The upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earth's crossover just got even bigger, as another iconic Superman actor will return to play the Man of Steel. Smallville star Tom Welling will reprise his role as Clark Kent, with the crossover exploring the fate of the character ten years after the events of Smallville's series finale.
The CW confirmed the news along with a statement from executive producer Marc Guggenheim.
“For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville. Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it,” said Guggenheim. “So when we first started talking about Crisis on Infinite Earths, our first, second and third priorities were getting Tom to reprise his iconic role as Clark Kent. To say that we’re thrilled would be a Superman-sized understatement.”
Arrow star Stephen Amell similarly acknowledged the lasting influence of Smallville, tweeting, "There’d be no crossover without Tom Welling. So Tom Welling is in the crossover."
Interestingly, though, Guggenheim's statement specifically refers to "Clark Kent" rather than "Superman," which could be taken as a sign that Welling's Clark has given up the superhero lifestyle. On the other hand, Welling's Clark was notorious for waiting until the very end of the series to actually don the costume and the Superman name. Maybe he's just keeping up old habits?
Welling is now the third actor cast as a version of Superman in the crossover. Previously we learned Tyler Hoechlin's Superman will return (along with Elizabeth Tulloch's Lois Lane and Jon Cryer's Lex Luthor) and Brandon Routh will play a new version of Superman inspired by the graphic novel Kingdom Come.
This will be the first time Welling has played Superman since Smallville ended in May 2011. The Smallville saga has continued in comic book form, however, with DC Comics publishing the serialized Smallville: Season 11 from 2012 to 2014.
This is just the latest example of how the cast of Crisis will pay tribute to DC's long television history. Other recent announcements include Kevin Conroy finally playing Bruce Wayne in live-action and Burt Ward being cast in an undisclosed role.
