I am getting breaking news on the wire saying the Iranian Supreme leader has ordered the Guardian Council to recount the vote. This is unprecedented in Iran considering the fact that the supreme leader had already endorsed Ahmadinejad's election as a "divine blessing". The demonstrations have forced him to make a complete u-turn and ask the Guardian council to recount the votes of the contested election

If the election results had come out as 52% to 48% that would be believable :lol::lol:

I doubt if they even counted the votes - there is nowhere they can count 40 million votes in 2 hours

Iran's top legislative body is ready to recount presidential election votes, state TV has reported - after vote-rigging claims sparked 'deadly' clashes.

Protesters attack pro-government militia building near rally supporting Mirhossein Mousavi in Tehran

The Guardian Council was also quoted as saying that checking the ballot boxes from Friday's poll may lead to a change in the candidates' tallies.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's landslide victory in the election spurred tens of thousands of his rival Mirhossein Mousavi's supporters to protest in Tehran.

Violence erupted during a rally on Monday and seven people are said to have died.

State-run Radio Payam announced: "Several thugs wanted to attack a military post and vandalise public property in the vicinity of Azadi Square.

"Unfortunately seven people were killed and several others wounded in the incident."

Tensions are mounting as supporters of both political rivals were expected to rally at the same place in Tehran later.

They might have one of those Franken/Coleman style skirmishes of their own.:puke:

But a recount will almost be pointless if those doing the counting are the same ones who declared Ahmadinejad the winner in the first place.

There have always been a large number of Iranians who hate the current regime....that is, the Mullahs and Revolutionary Guard members around Khamenei. No one's ever going to know how big a percentage of the population they are, as the percentage changes over time, like the percentage of any country that hates the government. The difference here is, in a country where the state has a proud revolutionary background, people can justify another the idea of another revolution if they're convinced the current regime is as rotten as the former one (in this case, the Shahs).
