Putin Threatens Arrests As Fuel Shortages Spark Chaos Across Russia
The Independent
August 20, 2026
Russian police have arrested citizens complaining of fuel shortages at the pump, as Ukraine’s drone campaign sparked fighting at petrol stations and rationing.
On Wednesday, Moscow and its surrounding regions were forced to reinstate purchase limits on fuel, capping sales at between 50 and 60 litres per vehicle.
As Ukraine intensifies its “deep strike” campaign, hitting another major oil refinery on Wednesday, the strain on Russia’s domestic energy grid continues to grow. Across at least 12 regions, miles of gridlocked traffic now stall forecourts, with motorists waiting up to 30 hours only to find the pumps empty.
The prolonged waits have pushed tempers to breaking point, with footage showing fights erupting between drivers over fuel.
Dozens of Russian regions have faced fuel shortages this summer after months of Ukrainian drone strikes on oil refineries and storage hubs. Industry analysts warn that supplies will remain tight across much of the country until peak summer travel demand subsides..
Fuel purchase restrictions are beginning to make a comeback in some regions as persistent shortages continue to dog the domestic market following months of Ukrainian drone strikes on oil refineries, in what Russian media is calling the “second wave” of the summer fuel crisis.
…A pattern of recent Russian actions has prompted concerns, the officials said, including drone incursions into Romania, a Russian missile that crossed into Poland last month and an uptick in alleged sabotage actions and cyberattacks in Europe.
Under Article 5 of the treaty that created NATO, members of the alliance are expected to come to each other's defense if attacked, a provision that the U.S. invoked after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. But Mr. Trump has long questioned NATO's reliability and criticized member states for — in his view — not contributing enough to their own defense.
Mr. Trump has also publicly pushed Russia and Ukraine to end their four-year-long war, though diplomatic efforts have appeared to stall.
Meanwhile, Russia has maintained its partnership with Iran during the U.S.'s war with the Middle Eastern state, providing intelligence to Iran on U.S. positions in the region, CBS News reported earlier this year. The two countries have also cooperated on drone manufacturing for years.

Poland's $4,750,000,000 order covered 250 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams, 17 Joint Assault Bridges and 26 M88A2 Hercules recovery vehicles — delivered in roughly 24 months.

Poland ordered 250 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks in April 2022, weeks after Russian forces crossed into Ukraine, and General Dynamics Land Systems is delivering them all in roughly 24 months.
The $4,750,000,000 package covered more than the tanks: 17 M1074 Joint Assault Bridges, 26 M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicles, ammunition, training, and logistics support.
The delivery pace is the part worth noticing. Poland did not pick the SEPv3 because it is the best-protected tank in Europe on paper — it picked a design with an active production line that could put steel in Polish units while a war was running next door...
An M1A2 Abrams main battle tank with 1-16th Infantry, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, conducts a Live Fire Accuracy Screening Test Sept. 28, 2025, on Novo Selo Training Area, Bulgaria. The LFAST is used to assess and confirm the accuracy of its firing system before live fire gunnery, ensuring the tank is ready for combat and its firing control systems are functioning correctly. Abrams live fire exercises increase the lethality of crews on collective tables while generating warfighting readiness and combat credible forces along NATO’s Eastern Flank.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt strikes on Russian diesel, saying the attacks are causing a global shortage. He spoke after diesel prices in the U.S. hit a record on Friday, soaring past $6 a gallon on average.
Ukraine has for months been targeting Russia’s oil and gas industry with long-range strikes, prompting fuel rationing across the country and causing Moscow to ban diesel exports in July, one factor disrupting the global supply of diesel. But the global crunch also came after the war on Iran curtailed oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump was asked by a reporter if he had spoken with Zelenskyy following his recent conversation with Russia’s Vladimir Putin. He responded by calling on Zelenskyy to halt strikes against Russia.
“Mr. Zelensky has to do one thing. He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia,” Trump told reporters on the sidelines of the Irish Open, which is being played at his Doonbeg golf club.
“We spoke to Mr. Zelenskyy about it. There are plenty of other targets. Don’t hit diesel fuel, because that’s hurting, that’s hurting the world,” he said...

President Trump publicly called Monday for an end to Russia’s war on Ukraine after a series of attacks by Kyiv on Moscow’s energy holdings triggered another spike in diesel fuel prices.
“Russia has unfortunately lost control of its Diesel Oil Industry due to its War with Ukraine,” the president posted on Truth Social.
“A large number of their Diesel refineries have been blown up and are, at least temporarily, out of commission,” the president went on. “This ridiculous and never ending War with Ukraine must be ended...
The Ukrainian Ground Forces have received a total of 82 M1A1 Abrams tanks as part of military aid, including 33 from the USA in the M1A1SA-UKR variant and 49 from Australia in the M1A1AIM version. As it turns out, contrary to various media reports, these tanks enjoy a very high reputation among...

On the pages of The War Zone portal, a report was published featuring interviews with soldiers from the 425th Separate Assault Regiment „Skala”, which is likely one of three Ukrainian units operating M1A1 Abrams tanks. The first and most important conclusion drawn by Ukrainian soldiers fighting on the front line is that armoured vehicles, including tanks, save soldiers’ lives and are indispensable on the battlefield, even when equipment losses are incurred due to the presence of anti-tank munitions in the form of FPV drones.
Infantry operating independently is not only far more vulnerable to attacks from drones carrying HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) and fragmentation warheads, but moving long distances with full equipment, ammunition, water, and food supplies also becomes problematic. One of the greatest advantages of the M1A1 tanks mentioned by soldiers serving in the 425th Separate Assault Regiment is the very high level of resilience of their primary composite armour. One soldier, using the call sign Kent, recalls that his vehicle was hit by 20 drones near Pokrovsk; despite this, the crew survived and continues to fight.
Kent mentions that the advantage lies not only in the main armour but also in the supporting auxiliary protection in the form of Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) modules, as well as mesh and rod screens, despite their debatable utility given the operating mechanisms of HEAT warheads mounted on FPV drones. Another praised design feature that significantly increases the survivability of both the tank and the crew is the fully isolated ammunition stowage equipped with blow-off panels. M1A1 and M1A2 tanks have three such magazines: two in the rear turret bustle, each holding 18 rounds, and a third small magazine in the hull behind the turret on the starboard side, which holds 6 rounds, providing a total of 42 rounds for the main gun that are stored in a manner safe for the crew...
