As an outsider, it is comical seeing the same tactics applied to the U.S., the trade deficit may be $600 billion but because of the weaknesses inherent in the U.S. political system, they just have to make targeted purchases of $50 billion that they target with tariffs and wait it out. Once they get a taste, it may take years for the Chinese to let that go. The U.S. is still pursuing Venezuela many years after the fact. It the same way with women, once they get that $600 billion surplus in the bedroom, they can't let that go. They will always be pursuing you no matter what happens.
I like to see Congressional action that passes a specific trade policy that the next President will have to accept whomever is elected. There are all kinds of legislation like Obamacare, that a President has to administratively implement, even though it is against their beliefs. Instead of bringing only a trade deal that is mutually accepted.
This tactic could be used with any country that implements a economic policy unfavorable to another country that may result in their leadership being targeted.
