I read an article a while ago where the author compared internet trolls to flashers (dudes who expose themselves). Flashers engage in their anti-social (asshole-like) behavior because they are rewarded by the shock and outrage of their victims. Internet trolls make their ridiculous/insulting/asshole comments purely for the purpose of pushing people's buttons. The more upset they can make people, the greater their reward.
If the victims of either of these dick-heads ignored them, or responded with dismissive boredom, then their reward would be taken away. Anyway, speech over. I'm stepping off my soap box now.
