Re: !!!!!!!!!!!! BLU-RAY WINS - WARNER BROS. GOES EXCLUSIVE-sorry if repost!!!!!!!!!!

But these bogo free deals for blu ray that been poppin up as of late..I couldnt resist (first 4 harry potters for $40? all 3 pirates & casino royale $40?...hell yes). :smh: @ me for waitin this long..they look bananas in hi-def. I must said wow & cot dayuum at pirates like 50 times . Blu ray is da shit, cant front there.

My only concern now is that when this war is ova..hows the prices on these bitches gonne be. I mean one of the main reasons I aint buy none of them is that most of the good movies be like $25-$35.

Now that theres competition, theres great deals to draw ppl in. I only bought them movies cause they worked out to about $10 a piece but if it stays at $25-35, I dont think ima mess wit them like that. Hopefully it drops to dvd prices

However, Sony's push for Blu-ray -- which analysts estimate as an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars -- has cost the company in areas such as the key videogame market.

What many of us have been saying for awhile. They focused so much on using the PS3 to push blu - ray that it has adversely affected their videogame market share/business.

Warner: DVD format war hurt movie sales

LAS VEGAS - Why did Warner Bros. choose last week to exclusively back the Blu-ray format for high-definition DVDs and ditch HD DVD, a move that could end the bitterest battle in the electronics industry?

Partly because the studio’s research turned up an alarming trend: the next-generation format fight hurt overall DVD sales this holiday season.

DVDs have become an important piece of Hollywood’s revenue pie, and an unexpected dip in sales can be painful. And that’s exactly what happened in the fourth quarter, according to Warner, when DVD sales fell from the previous year.

And you can’t just blame the economy, or the popularity of video games. Here at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner’s Home Entertainment Group, told Fortune that with high-definition TVs selling briskly and a strong summer at the domestic box office that topped $4 billion for the first time, Hollywood executives expected a merrier Christmas than the one they got.

“We saw evidence that the format war was actually hurting standard definition,” Tsujihara said. “The industry had very high expectations for the fourth quarter. The summer was the highest box office quarter in history. We ended up the year somewhere down 2 percent or a little bit more than 2 percent. That was a little disappointing, given the summer we had.” Warner Bros. and Fortune are both owned by Time Warner (TWX).

Market research showed it wasn’t just NetFlix (NFLX) or Apple’s (AAPL) iTunes hurting traditional DVD sales, either. Consumers who bought HDTVs were so afraid of backing the wrong high-definition movie format that they decided not to buy movies at all.

“Consumers were confused by the format war, and they were saying they weren’t going to make a decision on either for a while, until they could figure out which one to buy,” Tsujihara said. “Salespeople were having a hard time telling people why they should convert to HD.”

So Warner Bros. made a call. Based on consumer trends, which have shown Blu-ray movies outselling HD DVD 2 to 1, Blu-ray was the obvious choice.

Still, Hollywood’s not out of the woods yet. Though Warner’s move gives Blu-ray a clear advantage over HD DVD, there’s no guarantee the masses will embrace either disk format. It’s up to industry marketers to devise a way to convince consumers that it’s a good idea to keep buying movies on discs, rather than rent or download them.

Those strategy sessions are increasingly at the heart of CES, a show that used to focus on the nuts and bolts of electronics. Hollywood dealmakers descended on Las Vegas in force this week to hobnob with technology and retail executives in the hotels along the Strip and, they hope, hit upon a formula that will reinvent the business of entertainment.

“It’s become more important to us, especially as it relates to digital distribution,” Tsujihara said. “Longer term we believe that the growth for our industry is going to come from transitioning that standard definition player base to higher definition, and transitioning some of that to digital distribution as well.”

CES 2008: Warner did not violate HD DVD contract

Following the Blu-ray press conference Monday afternoon, BetaNews briefly spoke with Warner Bros. President Ron Sanders about the studio's decision to go Blu-ray and a potential lawsuit from Toshiba.

BetaNews: Warner Bros. is involved in the DVD Forum and was involved in the development of HD DVD. You also were one of the first studios to utilize Microsoft's VC1 codec. Toshiba has hinted that you may have violated contractual obligations to them over HD DVD. Are you concerned they might file a lawsuit over this? Do you have a contract in place to support HD DVD?

Ron Sanders: Clearly, [Toshiba and the HD DVD Promotional Group] have reason to be upset... But we fulfilled our obligations to them. That's why we will continue to provide movies in the HD DVD format through May rather than stopping now. They very well could file a lawsuit, but we have done everything that was required of us. We did not violate any contract.

Major anime company to release in Blu-ray
February 01, 2008

ICv2 has learned that ADV Films has chosen the Blu-ray high definition format and plans to begin releasing high def versions of some titles as early as this spring. A hghly placed source at the company told us that "frontlist is more important than catalogue right now," so the first high def releases will be the company's newest titles. The move to begin releasing Blu-ray versions of some new titles may have an impact on ADV's release schedule, as high def transfers will have to be prepared.

High definition is at a turning point, with Warner Bros.' recent decision to support Blu-ray exclusively beginning in June (the studio had previously supported both formats) swinging the momentum toward the format in its war against HD. Player sales moved heavily toward Blu-ray in the wake of the Warners announcement. But the Toshiba-led HD group is not lying down -- it will run a Superbowl ad supporting the format this weekend.

Anime companies have been slow to begin high def releases, with concerns over the format war as one important reason. High end distributor Bandai Visual has releases in both high def formats. Sony has released its features Tekkonkinkreet and Paprika in Blu-ray format. And FUNimation has expressed support for high definition anime as format issues become settled (see "Interview with Gen Fukunaga, Part 1"). But ADV appears to be willing to make its bet and move forward in a big way, believing that anime fans want the quality that high definition brings.

The move comes amidst a lot of speculation about ADV's future, after a tough year in the market in 2007, the ending of ADV's Newtype license (see "Newtype Successor Broadens Focus"), and discussion on fan sites about changes to ADV's Website. ADV issued a statement this week. "We know there are a lot of rumors swirling about, and that fans are looking for assurances that ADV will continue to distribute the anime series they know and love," the statement said. "While we can't go into any detail at this time, please know that ADV is working through a few short-term challenges and fully intends to continue our releases. We thank you for your patience."

Perhaps with its move to high definition, the picture at ADV will become clearer.
