Im not really a Fanboy about this stuff but. Are DVD's phasing out? I cant see people replacing their DVD collections.

Nope. Dvd's will still be around years after a new format takes over. Look at VHS they were still around up until last year I believe.

Warner Brothers announced today that they would be moving their titles from HD-DVD to the Blu-Ray format. Many have suggested that this marks the end of the next generation DVD battle, though two major studios continue to have exclusive HD-DVD distribution deals in place.

Warner Brother's defection, however, places the majority of movie releases on Blu-Ray:

Even before this new marketshare advantage, however, the New York Times reports that Blu-ray titles had outsold HD-DVD offerings as much as 2 to 1, and had even been chosen for exclusive distribution by Blockbuster.

Apple has been a member of the Blu-ray consortium's board of directors since 2005, but has not publicly announced their Blu-ray plans. Some expect Apple to officially launch Blu-ray support at Macworld San Francisco.

Re: !!!!!!!!!!!! BLU-RAY WINS - WARNER BROS. GOES EXCLUSIVE-sorry if repost!!!!!!!!!!

Warner moved to Blu-ray as no one was buying high-def nor standard-def

The president of Warner Home Entertainment has provided some reasoning as to why Warner Bros. decided to go Blu-ray exclusively. The president remarked it was time to pick a side as consumers were becoming confused and were holding off on buying either high-def or standard-def formats. Further, WB had been selling 60 percent of its HD titles in Blu-ray in North America, rising to over 70 percent in Europe and 90 percent plus in Japan.

quote:

In a nutshell, said Tsujihara that WB had been "monitoring the [high-def] situation closely" and felt it was time to pick a side. The big problem? "Consumer confusion was beginning to happen even with standard-definition DVD," he said. "Both formats were having an impact that caused consumers to say, let's wait a bit to buy anything, even a standard-definition DVD. We were starting to see the worst of all worlds: No one was buying high-def and not buying standard-def either."

The argument that confusion between HD DVD and Blu-ray was causing people not to buy either high-def format has been with us for awhile, but this is the first time I've heard anyone make the connection to declining regular DVD sales. It makes sense, though: If you, as a consumer, feel a (real) move to a new standard is imminent, you're not going to buy the old one. Industry-wide, total DVD sales fell 4.5 percent last year, a huge decline that has some insiders nervous.

Tsujihara said that, not including WB's blockbuster Planet Earth release, the company had already been selling 60 percent of its high-def titles in Blu-ray format in the U.S. But that figure was 70%-plus in Europe and 90%-plus in Japan.

Re: !!!!!!!!!!!! BLU-RAY WINS - WARNER BROS. GOES EXCLUSIVE-sorry if repost!!!!!!!!!!

Man I can remember back in April after doing a bunch of research, I bought my PS3. A slew of X-Box fanboys were trying to dis me for picking it up. When I told them it was a great deal and how it is also a very good Blu-Ray playe. They tried clowning me.

Now those hecklers have been getting quieter and quieter to the point where almost all of my friends with Xboxs have switched. I Knew Blu-Ray would win. To make a long story short, I got a bunch of calls from people who I guided to the PS3 (not forced) offering to take me to lunch. They were all glad they listened to me. Are very happy with the Blu-Ray player side of the PS3 and are even more grateful to me for helping them pick the right next-gen format.

No doubt. Their product has gotten better ajd more competitive in the last few years.
But they still have almost a negligible market share, globally.

CNET recommends refraining from HD DVD

Because of the recent news that Warner Bros. Entertainment will be exclusively supporting Blu-ray, CNET recommends refraining from purchasing an HD DVD player in the near future. Exclusive support of Warner Bros. Entertainment gives Blu-ray a large advantage in terms of studio backing, leaving only Paramount and Universal as major studios releasing movies exclusively on the HD DVD format. This guide (HD DVD vs. Blu-ray) will be overhauled after CES to reflect this and any other news announced at the show.

Editor's note, January 5, 2008: Because of the recent news that Warner Bros. This guide will be overhauled after CES to reflect this and any other news announced at the show.

DVD is, by some measurements, the greatest success in consumer electronics history. Following its 1997 debut, it took the format just a few years to completely conquer the home-video market previously ruled by VHS tapes. Before DVD even reached its 10th birthday, however, the electronics industry and the Hollywood studios began putting it out to pasture. Two rival next-generation formats--Blu-ray and HD DVD--are now vying to become the successor to DVD's throne. Both display movies in full high-definition resolution, addressing one shortfall of the current DVD format, which is only standard-def. The video and audio quality of both formats can be truly spectacular when shown on an HDTV with a quality home theater audio system, surpassing even high-def television itself in fidelity and impact.

The bad news? To get that improved fidelity, you have to decide between either a Blu-ray player or an HD DVD player, and you won't be able to play certain studios' movies on either one. For example, if you're a sci-fi fan and want to watch The Fifth Element (Sony Pictures), you'll need a Blu-ray player, but if you want to watch Serenity (Universal) you'll need an HD DVD player. Yes, combo players that can handle both formats are available, but they currently cost more than actually purchasing two players, one for each format!

As a result of the format war, most HDTV owners should refrain from buying a Blu-ray or an HD DVD player in the short term. There are some exceptions to this recommendation however. Gamers getting a Sony PlayStation3 can use the console to play Blu-ray discs, while Xbox 360 gamers can get a $180 add-on that lets their consoles play HD DVD discs. Meanwhile, early adopters who insist on taking the HD disc plunge can take some solace in the ever-falling prices of HD DVD (and to a much lesser extent, Blu-ray) players. If one side eventually loses the war and stops producing movies--and it's possible that neither side will ever "lose"--the loss will sting less with a cheaper player. It's also worth remembering that all of these players also play back regular DVD discs, converting them to higher resolutions, which can sometimes improve video quality.

In the next few pages, we'll take a look at both formats, examine how they compare to one another, and highlight the advantages--and disadvantages--they offer compared to the current generation of DVD. But if you're looking for a prediction on the outcome of the format war, you're not going to get it here. As of early fall 2007, both sides are firmly entrenched and neither shows any sign abandoning the fight soon.

Saddest Sight in the World: HD DVD Sponsored Bags at CES

IMG_4909.JPG

Oh, poor HD DVD. Toshiba pays big bucks to stamp its name and the HD DVD logo on every journo bag they hand out at CES. But Warner's bitchslap has sent them home to cut their wrists and cry in the corner, so they're not even here! Yep, the HD DVD Group has shitcanned their conference. Just how did we get to this sad state of affairs? Let's review.

Well, Warner scopes the holiday sales scene, sees Blu-ray picking up even though its gear cost more than HD DVD, and decides to go full steam ahead on Blu-ray, lest the format war suffocate both of the HD formats and DVD.

With only two studios left on HD DVD's team (Paramount and Universal), things look pretty crappy on their front, so I sorta don't blame them for bailing to ponder its doom. Hit the comments with what you think they'll say in their post-CES conference.

Apple is not making serious headway, they have approx 5-7% total of the computing market up from their what, 3% 5 years ago? That is not enough weight to influence any technology trends (unless maybe you're talking about mp3 players).

AppleTV anyone? Yeah..

Michael Bay says HD DVD will die a slow death

We're used to Michael Bay voicing his strong Blu-ray preference, but what is new is that this post wasn't written during the wee hours of the morning. The possibility of posting under the influence aside, Bay -- like many Blu-ray supporters -- is gloating after the latest dramatic announcement from Warner. Not only does he think that HD DVD will die a slow death, but also states "Blu ray is just better." He then erges his fans to "Have faith people Transformers will come out in Blu-ray one day!" Yeah ok, Michael we get it, but we wonder how you could've left out "You're my boy blue!"

As if anyone expected anything different, New Line confirmed with Variety Magazine that it'll follow Warner to the Blu-ray promise land. While this is a no brainer considering the relationship between Warner and New Line, (also owned by Time Warner, just like Engadget) other studios remain up in the air. When, and if, Universal makes the switch as well is any ones guess, but at this point we doubt many would expect otherwise. But, as we've learned in the last few days, anything's possible, but the idea of having one HD format to adopt is something even most members of the red camp can get behind.

Format war reworks 1980s video fight

Published: January 6 2008 19:15 | Last updated: January 6 2008 19:15

In Hollywood, history has a habit of repeating itself, often to the great annoyance of audiences, with stories and plots recycled and retold.

But that phenomenon is not limited to what happens in front of the camera. The race to succeed the DVD between Blu-ray, backed by Sony, and HD-DVD, backed by Toshiba and Microsoft, mirrors the VHS-Betamax format war of the 1980s. Then, individual film studios also grappled with rival technologies in the hope one would dominate home entertainment.

In the mid-1980s, VHS eventually triumphed over the Sony-backed Betamax after securing enough studio backing. This time, though, Sony has made sure history has not been repeated and looks to have won the latest format war by securing support from Warner Brothers.

When VHS triumphed over Betamax, the victory inspired a surge in consumer spending on home video, forming a lucrative fresh revenue stream for Hollywood.

Studio bosses hope Warner Brothers’ decision to back Blu-ray last week will ensure the same result by providing a similar catalyst for their home entertainment businesses.

With DVD sales growth stalling, studios have been anxiously waiting for another format to sell, allowing them to generate more income from new titles and to exploit their film libraries.

Warner produces more DVDs than any other studio and has the largest film library in Hollywood, which is likely to make its support the critical factor in deciding the outcome of the format war. Its backing of Blu-ray on the eve of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas gives the Sony format about 70 per cent of Hollywood’s output.

Warner joins Sony Pictures Entertainment, Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox and Metro-Goldwyn Mayer in the Blu-ray camp. Universal, Paramount and DreamWorks Animation are the studios backing HD-DVD.

Some analysts have criticised Warner, the biggest player in the $42bn home video market, for not acting sooner. “If Warner had decided this six to nine months ago, next-generation DVD could have had a meaningful impact on the 2007 holiday season,” Richard Greenfield, an analyst at Pali Capital, wrote to clients.

However, Barry Meyer, the studio’s chairman, said maintaining support for both products was crucial in order to lower prices for consumers.

As they made their decision, Warner executives were particularly mindful of the international market. The studio has one of the industry’s most powerful overseas distribution networks, which it has emphasised as a vital source of growth. While Blu-ray disc sales had opened only a modest lead over HD-DVD in the US, the advantage had swung to a wide margin elsewhere.

In the UK and France, for example, Blu-ray discs accounted for 75 per cent of the market. In Japan, that was more than 90 per cent.

The studio’s switch means the outlook is gloomy for the studios that have championed HD-DVD. Universal, owned by General Electric, has been the format’s biggest champion but it was keeping tight-lipped yesterday about its next move.

It was also unclear yesterday whether the other studios backing HD-DVD would change sides, although it is understood Paramount has reserved the right to switch its backing to Blu-ray.

Warner’s decision caught the HD-DVD camp unawares and left Microsoft, Toshiba and the other companies backing the format in disarray about what to do next. A party and press conference scheduled to promote HD-DVD at CES have both been cancelled after Warner’s announcement.

The outlook for HD-DVD was much more promising before Christmas. Wal-Mart sold as many as 90,000 players in a single day in late November after dropping the price on an early Toshiba model to $99. But Blu-ray proved more popular. Blu-ray discs outsold HD-DVDs by a ratio of two-to-one before Christmas and by the end of 2007 there were 4m Blu-ray capable players in north America, compared with about 750,000 HD-DVD machines.

A Blu-ray spokesman said: “A single format will provide the best entertainment experience for the consumer.”

Blu-Rays have coating that is highly resistant to scratches.
Hard Drives get fucked up too. They get virus, they get corrupted, they can get dropped, wet, etc.
At least with a disc you only lose whats on the disc. With HD you can lose parts of files or everything.

I have both blu ray and hd-dvd - since i got the 5 free movies for each format, I didn't lose out at all. The only movies i bought for my hd-dvd player that isn't on blu ray is Transformers, the Bourne Trilogy, and Batman Returns. I always figured that no matter who wins, the other machine will continue to function for the next 4 - 5 years. Glad it is over now rather than much later.

I know the look, color, and sounds on my own movies better they anyone in the world. I color-time every single image, and am there for every single audio tweak. I see my films in the editing and final process no less then a 100 times. I know ever single nuance. For some dick wads on these posts who think I can't make an informed choice on what format in the end, has the truer results for my own films. Well you where to shove.... My films finished in Blu-Ray are better - more true. Hd is better than DVD, but just not as good as Blu-Ray. So buying a Transformers Hd is still the best you will see this movie as of today. But when Paramount caves for Blu-Ray in the future - This will happen, then you will see Transformers one day finished in Blu-Ray and I will sure be able to tell the difference.

In Blu-ray Coup, Sony Has Opening But Hurdles, Too
By SARAH MCBRIDE, YUKARI IWATANI KANE and NICK WINGFIELD
January 7, 2008; Page B1

Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray technology for high-definition DVDs has given the Japanese electronics giant an opportunity it hasn't had in 25 years: the chance to win a high-stakes format war and reap the benefits across its sprawling empire. However, its victory comes at a high cost and may be fleeting.

Sony on Friday scored a key win by luring Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. to its Blu-ray technology, putting itself in a position to triumph over Toshiba Corp.'s HD DVD after a years-long fight to become the standard for the next generation of DVDs.

However, Sony's push for Blu-ray -- which analysts estimate as an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars -- has cost the company in areas such as the key videogame market.

Many analysts believe that Sony's insistence on putting Blu-ray on its PlayStation 3 players gave it just enough extra consumers to help tilt next-generation DVD sales toward Blu-ray. Paul Erickson, analyst at the NPD Group's DisplaySearch research firm, calls it the "X factor" that "saved their Blu-ray fortunes." If Toshiba had underwritten the cost of putting HD DVD onto the rival Xbox 360 from Microsoft Corp., the reasoning goes, the battle might have swung another way.

Re: !!!!!!!!!!!! BLU-RAY WINS - WARNER BROS. GOES EXCLUSIVE-sorry if repost!!!!!!!!!!

real talk I neva bought a blu ray disk since i got my ps3 on launch day. Played talidega nights and the picture quality was ok at best, so i was like fuck it.

But these bogo free deals for blu ray that been poppin up as of late..I couldnt resist (first 4 harry potters for $40? all 3 pirates & casino royale $40?...hell yes). :smh: @ me for waitin this long..they look bananas in hi-def. I must said wow & cot dayuum at pirates like 50 times . Blu ray is da shit, cant front there.

My only concern now is that when this war is ova..hows the prices on these bitches gonne be. I mean one of the main reasons I aint buy none of them is that most of the good movies be like $25-$35.

Now that theres competition, theres great deals to draw ppl in. I only bought them movies cause they worked out to about $10 a piece but if it stays at $25-35, I dont think ima mess wit them like that. Hopefully it drops to dvd prices
